I'm a sucker for independeance day type movies.
« on: May 05, 2007, 11:01:46 PM »
I think it's because I'm Canadian and thus can't have much pride in our military, but when I see those save the world movies and the dumb smuck that due to odd circumstances has been placed in a role to save all humanity and he's like "Lets do this thang, Mr President"  and then shoots the nukes, I'm all smiles and cheers.  I feel foolish.

It doesn't work when its a patriotic movie, but only when he whole worlds at sake.

Vimy Ridge?  Ypres? Juno Beach? Our contributions in the liberation of the Netherlands, and the campaign in Italy? At the end of World War 2 we had the third largest navy in the world.

Just because we've never been a superpower doesn't mean we don't have a proud military history.

We'll I don't think theres a question of whether your military could be ours it would be about if you could assimulat us properly.  I think seeing how most of our population is low to the boarder you could easily annex it, and as long as the American regime isn't to hard, we would give up fighting in a few decades, but i think there would always be some freedom fighters that would live up north or in the mountains.

we'd just make a bunch of wal marts and mcdonalds in the moutains to lure them out and then bomb said wal mart and mcdonalds.

no one can resist a wal mart and mcdonald, and they both tend to pop up in places with no population.

if we want to be really evil, we'll build one of those wal marts with a mcdonalds inside.

Thats true, but it doesn't give me pride in a military sense, it gives me pride in us a nation and I think there is a difference.  I think military pride is having the strength to enforce, with the US has, and the knowledge to know when to us it correctly, US not so much.

The battles you refer too, I think our contribution was much more of a community sense of gathering together to fight wrong, and that is a much better pride, but i don't count it as traditional military pride.

That doesn't make an awful lot of sense to me.  Military pride doesn't mean that you have the biggest most powerful military around.  It means that your military has contributed in difficult conflicts, that they have been effective and made tough sacrifices.  It has nothing to do with size or who has the most expensive toys.

But I think it does.  How are we to contribute to difficult times when we don't have a powerful military?  I think in a historical sense yes there is a lot to be said on our actions but if another large scale war was to happen, we'd be effectively useless and thats where i loss my sense of pride.  I guess I have pride historically but not with our current military as a world force, but i do as peace keepers.

Going back to what i said before, military pride to me is power and knowledge.  We have the knowledge but not the power.  And there is a lot to be said about power, though I consider it less than knowledge.  But power gives us a much stronger position on the world scale.  take for example the Iraq war, we were against it.  If we had a powerful military such as the British, our lack of involvement in the situation would have been a far more powerful statement on the war than it did.

Except the geopolitical situation doesn't require an army for a "large scale war".  And few countries have ever been prepared beforehand for a large scale war.  We didn't have a huge military establishment in 1939.  Neither did the US.

You want to see our contribution today?  Look to Afghanistan.  We have three thousand troops there and are one of the few countries willing to put troops in the south where the danger is.  That's something to be "proud" of, that our military has a tradition of being willing to take on dangerous and difficult tasks.

Afghanistan isn't "peacekeeping".  Neither were any of the battles and campaigns I mentioned before.  Hell, the government is getting flamed from the left from people saying that we shouldn't be in Afghanistan, that it's not peacekeeping.

dude, the Taliban didn't just roll over and die.  They still exist, and are still fighting an insurgency campaign in the south of Afghanistan.  Canada has the second most casualties in Afghanistan behind the US, and are actively contributing in military campaigns against the remnants of the Taliban.  We've had 54 deaths in Afghanistan.

Our casualty rate in Afghanistan is very similar to the American casualty rate in Iraq.  There's just far fewer total deaths because we have far fewer total troops deployed.
