Why was Superman Returns hated?

I finally watched this. I got to say I don't get the hate. Is it because people expect Superhero movies to be nothing but action? You realize the idea of Superman is outdated and one dimensional.  You HAD to give him a personality and I think they did that here.  Plus, theres more to dig from it than just Superhero bonanza.  I don't even understand the emoman talk.  Yeah, he cared what happened to his old girlfriend... so what? If he didn't care, if they made this movie and had Superman come back out as one dimensional and flawless character, only the dumbest would have bought into it. Superman is one of my least liked superheros and I enjoyed this movie. I even enjoyed the "Do we still need God?" subtext.

This is true, Superman Returns was better than ALL THREE X-men movies.

However, that still doesn't make it a great film. It was made watchable only by its visuals.

I used to like Bryan Singer but I've noticed a few things about him: he can't direct action sequences to save his life, and his movies tend to be really badly paced.  The pace in Superman Returns was just glacial.

I also hear he's incredibly difficult to work with, arrives late to work, and throws tantrums on set and causes work delays.  I don't know if any of these are true, though.

I thought the movie handled the character of Lois Lane terribly, too.  I didn't feel any reason why Superman would be interested in someone who would treat Clark Kent so badly.  It just made Lois come off as shallow.

People bag on X-men 3 ... at least it was short and to the point. If you didn't like it, fine.  At least it didn't keep you waiting for SOMETHING to happen for 2 1/2 hours like SR does. Jesus christ. Not really.  People think he is invincible (sans kryptonite) because of the movies, but he actually gets hurt A LOT.  He is far from being invincible, he is just a super guy in a universe full of superguys that can hit as hard as him.  You can own superman with magic as well.

This is, in a nutshell, what was wrong with this movie.  Superman is cliched, the boy scout, the savior from another world. . .the only thing that makes him work is that he's supposed to be a symbol of hope.

X1 was quite disappointing to me as a hardcore X-Men fan. I loved the beginning of the movie, but by the time it ended I was rather underwhelmed. It's not horrible by any means imo. X2 on the other hand is quite bad. I can't really watch the movies anymore because they marked the end of my comic collecting (well the first one did). God damn Claremont and you're stupid Neo mutants bullshit

Spiderman 3>Superman Returns tho. SP3 was very fun imo, and I wouldn't put it in the Hulk/Daredevil/LOEG class of suckyness

I never read a comic book in my life by then (well probably one or two) and my comic book knowledge was the batman movies and vague memories of occasionally watching the cartoon so I had no nostalgia or knowledge hanging over the movie for me.

When you have a love for characters, it hurts even more when you see them treated poorly. I hated seeing Storm totally invalidated, for instance. The sad thing is that they got some characters soo right though - like Xavier and especially Magneto, who was amazing

Personally, I like the idea of a simple person having to confront a complex, changing world.  Alan Moore handled this pretty well with Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?.  Superman can be done right, and be an interesting character - it's just pretty tough.

I haven't seen Superman Returns but for some reason I just highly doubt they managed to make the most boring mainstream super hero of all time INTERESTING out of the blue.

Probably because it was boring and sucked? That seems to be the most popular reason from people I've talked to. It was also like four and a half hours long and had 1.5 action sequences.

I loved Superman Returns all the way up to the space shuttle sequence.  There was a nice mixture of lonely, emotional Superman and OMFG HE CAN STILL DO SUPER STUFF CUZ HES FUCKIN SUPERMAN Superman.  Everything after that sequence, though, just made me feel like I was watching a really long episode of Smallville.  That's not a good thing, despite what Smallville fans will tell you.

We'll never see something like Darkseid in a Superman movie.  The whole Apokolips/New Genesis mythos are too fantastical for a Superman movie.  At most, we'll get Zod, Brainiac, Metallo, Doomsday, or one of Superman's other "heavy-hitting" enemies.

It's okay, though.  Darkseid was really well-represented in the Superman animated series and JLU, IMO.
