Why in god's name is it possible to summon a dildo storm? Did the programmers really think this was needed? Or is second life really that open ended?

Nearly all the content in the game is user created. The programmers didn't create the dildo storm, some player did. You can also purchase functioning penises and what not.

second life is a well know hangout for furries and pedophiles, there was an article once about how there was pedo content (aka roleplay, pictures on the walls and "realistic" models where people could play to fuck other players dressed as naked kids) and the guy doing the article said he had reported the place to the company that does the game and fbi and the company said that there was nothing they could see since it was all simulated and for some reasons it's legal in the states
