Did Phil get permission to kill off Tony? In the beginning Phil's guy said he's have to ask if it was possible or whatever and Phil was just like "Get it done."

I have to wonder if perhaps there'll be flack back against Phil for going after Tony without approval from the other family heads.

So I really really liked the ending.

The scene was constructed so that you thought something had to happen. The tension buildup was fantastic. And then to end it like it did, where you (or at least I) get this realization that NOTHING is going to happen. Tony is back to status quo and this is just another day. Great.

Yep. Ending with Tony getting shot would've been like a slap in the face. Another interesting ending would've been Tony in his robe going down for the paper again. Would have clearly said that everything was fine again for him, and probably wouldn't pissed people off just as much as him getting shot.

Just watched it. I liked it, and really I'm not sure how else it could've ended. Most (all?) of the immediate problems that existed at the beginning of the episode were solved by the end. The abrupt ending reminded me of Finnegans Wake ending in mid sentence.

The more people are looking into the ending the more interesting it's getting. I ganked this from another forum...I'm going to have to check it out myself to see if it's up to snuff. If true it's pretty interesting!

David Chase is truly rewarding the true fans who pay attention to detail.

So the point would have been that life continues and we may never know the end of the Sopranos. But if you pay attention to the history, you will find that all the answers lie in the characters in the restaurant. The trucker was the brother of the guy who was robbed by Christopher in Season 2. Remember the DVD players? The trucker had to identify the body. The boy scouts were in the train store and the black guys at the end were the ones who tried to kill Tony and only clipped him in the ear (was that season 2 or 3?).

Absolutely incredible!!!! There were three people in the restaurant who had reason to kill Tony and then it just ends."

My mom told me she watched the credits this morning, and the guy at the bar was credited as 'Man at the bar'. I don't doubt that the same actor probably played Nicky Leotardo in a previous episode, as he did look very familiar to me.
