Bobby Baccalla gets a 4-star death scene and Sil gets a disjointed, clumsy shootout? Wtf Chase?

Something I've been wondering about.

Did Phil get permission to kill off Tony? In the beginning Phil's guy said he's have to ask if it was possible or whatever and Phil was just like "Get it done."

I have to wonder if perhaps there'll be flack back against Phil for going after Tony without approval from the other family heads.

Haha, my heart was fucking pounding in my throat during that last scene. I liked the way it ended, but I can definitely understand why the rest of my family thought it was shit.

I'm gonna pop Season 1 in later tonight and get my freak on.

The Crying of Lot 49 ends right before what is probably the most important part of the story.

There's actually no reason to believe anything interesting happened when they went to black. Chase was simply building up suspense for five minutes, focusing on a few suspicious men, trying to make the audience feel nervous. Maybe that's how a gangster lives, always on edge.

So I really really liked the ending.

The scene was constructed so that you thought something had to happen. The tension buildup was fantastic. And then to end it like it did, where you (or at least I) get this realization that NOTHING is going to happen. Tony is back to status quo and this is just another day. Great.

Same goes for Crying of Lot 49, actually.  It could've been the biggest event in the story, or it could've been nothing.  The novel ends right before the titular crying of lot 49 (it takes place at an auction).

Oh, okay. Yeah, I was pretty confused at the end for a second. But a death scene at the end would have been a cliche.

My dad's all like "the ending was great! They left it open for anything! Were those shady guys mobsters going in for a hit? Were they FBI agents getting ready to bust Tony? And those black guys! Remember season 1? 2 black guys tried to kill Tony!"

I still firmly believe that the ending was meant to show that NOTHING was going to happen. Tony's life was as back to normal as it could possibly be.

Yep. Ending with Tony getting shot would've been like a slap in the face. Another interesting ending would've been Tony in his robe going down for the paper again. Would have clearly said that everything was fine again for him, and probably wouldn't pissed people off just as much as him getting shot.

Black guys are trouble. See I was thinking nothing happened, but I forgot about the black guys. They probably shot Tony and raped Meadow and AJ. That's why the scene went black!

Shot in the head. His wife then ran out of the SUV, leaving it in drive. The car moved forward and crushed Phil's melon.

Just watched it. I liked it, and really I'm not sure how else it could've ended. Most (all?) of the immediate problems that existed at the beginning of the episode were solved by the end. The abrupt ending reminded me of Finnegans Wake ending in mid sentence.

The more people are looking into the ending the more interesting it's getting. I ganked this from another forum...I'm going to have to check it out myself to see if it's up to snuff. If true it's pretty interesting!

"So here is what I found out. The guy at the bar is also credited as Nikki Leotardo. The same actor played him in the first part of season 6 during a brief sit down concerning the future of Vito. That wasn't that long ago. Apparently, he is the nephew of Phil. Phil's brother Nikki Senior was killed in 1976 in a car accident. Absolutely Genius!!!! David Chase is truly rewarding the true fans who pay attention to detail.

So the point would have been that life continues and we may never know the end of the Sopranos. But if you pay attention to the history, you will find that all the answers lie in the characters in the restaurant. The trucker was the brother of the guy who was robbed by Christopher in Season 2. Remember the DVD players? The trucker had to identify the body. The boy scouts were in the train store and the black guys at the end were the ones who tried to kill Tony and only clipped him in the ear (was that season 2 or 3?).

Absolutely incredible!!!! There were three people in the restaurant who had reason to kill Tony and then it just ends."

Also, I noticed the way the scene was cut when Tony entered the diner...it seemed as if Tony was looking in on himself already sitting down.

My mom told me she watched the credits this morning, and the guy at the bar was credited as 'Man at the bar'. I don't doubt that the same actor probably played Nicky Leotardo in a previous episode, as he did look very familiar to me.

Eh, I don't think Chase even knows if Tony dies or not.  I doubt that decision was every actually made.  He probably just created a situation to confuse the viewers and make them talk.  Nothing more.
