As most of you know the afi top 100 of all time is the "standard" and what is most used to know what are considered classics. AFI is redoing the list for the first time since 1997. WILL LORD OF THE RINGS TOP CITIZEN KANE!?!?!

Titanic will probably get on the list lol. Will be interesting to see how different it is.

Other noteworthy films I expected to be in it are Saving Private Ryan and perhaps the departed since it is so fresh in critics minds. It airs at 8 PM tomorrow on CBS.

standard?

okay, if it gets Haggis' shitty crash on there than it's a completely worthless standard.

standard?

afi's top 100 is the standard in the industry. it is the most prestigious film "award" (if being on a list is an award) outside the oscars, easily.

btw the list is hosted by MORGAN FREEMAN

oscars gave crash best picture winner and people still give a shit about the oscars, they will still give a shit about afi and I am pretty damn sure crash WON'T make the list. It will still be 90% movies from before 1980's.

That comparison doesn't really make sense since crash was basically a pity oscar that nobody really cared about.  The only worthwhile reason I could see for oscar's is betting on what will win and no, you never bet on what you like.

If it was about say a SPECIFIC part of the movie that was impressive (writing, special effects, etc.) then it could have more of a reason and make a decent discussion but this has completely different types of movies and a paragraph.  Why give a fuck really?

I'd rather play wii sports.  Boxing.

This is the American Film Institute list.  Lord of the Rings was made in New Zealand with a mostly non-American cast, what makes you guys think it's going to be on this list?

The Graduate at No. 7.... How did that happen?
Anyway, scanning through the list I'm pretty keen on the crowd pleasing spirit of its compilation. LA Confidential has a strong chance in joining up the higher ranks. A Fish Called Wanda deserves more recognition...
12 Angry Men is the kind of movie that would also fit right in list.... I'm not sure how their radar didn't pick that one up earlier.

Oh, and David Lean was a brit who usually worked with a non-American cast, and Kubrick mainly did his job from England, right? No trouble for their films to be on the list.

it's on the list of nominee's for the top 100. AFI has listed it as able to win. It was part of the 1000 films sent to critics to pick the top 100 from.

If it is filmed in english it can be on the list.

Just because it was financed by New Line? That's dumb.  I thought AFI was a bit more discriminating about that sort of thing.

The Third Man is on the list.

What the fuck?  How could they justify that?

We can now disregard this:

afi's top 100 is the standard in the industry. it is the most prestigious film "award" (if being on a list is an award) outside the oscars, easily.

AFI awards don't mean shit if the rules are going to be changed so that EVERYTHING is American.

FYI, I just looked at the ballot.  There are 400 candidates, not 1000.  So basically, 25% of the candidates will appear on the list.  There's really not that much selecting to be done.  This is stupid bullshit. . .

And about the nomineees, well, let's just say SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE is on the list.  Truly one of the 400 greatest American movies.  Well, less than 400, since there are non-American movies on the list.

I suspected it before, but now I'm sure.  AFI is bullshit.  I mean, you only have to look at their other lists like "100 years...100 screams" and "100 years...100 laughs."  EL OH EL

This list is for the ignorant dumbasses who'll watch the AFI special on TV, and the fact that they're including options like SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE only cements my belief.  I prefer the Sight and Sound list, it lets the filmmakers and critics fill out the questionnaires with whatever movies they want, no matter how famous, cheesy, or obscure.

It's just a bad list of candidates.  There are probably actually 250 viable candidates on the list, and half of them are ol or silent shit that few will vote for these days.

I quit looking, but there are tons of really stupid things on there.  All 3 LOTR movies are on it.  Rocky Horror (which isn't an American movie, and probably shouldn't even be on the list) is there.  POTC 1 is on it.  Shrek. There's Something About Mary. Spider-Man 2. Jurassic Park. American Beauty. A Clockwork Orange (I guess this is debatable--Kubrick is an American, but it was written by a brit, the money was british, and the cast and crew were british).  Paul Faggis's Crash is indeed on the list.

But 100 best american movies ever quality?

There are likely 250 viable candidates on the list, and a good portion of those are old, sometimes silent movies that are increasingly not seen very often.  I bet someone with more insight into the selection process, knowing the ins and outs, could probably predict with a fine degree of accuracy what will turn up on the list.

There are also a fair number of Bond movies on the list.  This is a poorly defined area (Moulin Rouge also falls into it)-- these are international movies.  They don't belong to any one country.  They have varied casts and crews.  Nowhere is it clearly defined what makes something an "American" film.

Also the AFI picks movies that are in ENGLISH. The oscars use the same standard for foreign pictures.

About 90-95 of the top 100 will be films made before 1975.

So we should just rename the English language American now?  Because that requirement is non-sensical.  Why do American's cave to co-opt movies from other countries?  As if we aren't imperialistic enough.

AFI is stupid bullshit.  If the AFI can pick British movies, that renders the BFI effectively useless.  AFI is distinguished mentally-challenged.  FUCK THIS LIST.  FUCK CHEEBS.

Say, Cheebs, should they start letting American films on the next BFI list?

If there's one thing I've learned about Cheebs it's that he's very impressionable and he seems to love following public opinion/party line. Someone "smarter" than him says the AFI is the be all end all? IT MUST BE. Someone more influencial than him says this is how it is? IT HAS TO BE

No wonder he's so obsessed with Hillary's republican days - it mirrors his own conserva-closeted psyche

How are these lists compiled? Do people judge movies in a vacuum or within a historical context?

This list is not the one that was released in 1997. Empire Strikes back was on the 1997 list.

:lol PD you were the one who used the afi top 100 to show what important films you have seen in a thread here. :punch

I just wanted to point out how few movies I had seen, and the list was helpful. What's wrong with that? I'm not pimping it like it's the Ten Commandments.

I am fairly certain Brazil was at least on the ballot for the new 100.  I would also not classify it as an American film.  All the writers, the director, and the main cast (aside from Dinero) are brits.  The producers were Americans, I think.  I guess it would fall into the category of "international" movies, like the Bond flicks.

you guys are idiots. Do you honestly think harry potter or something about mary will be on the top 100 of all time?

Also the AFI picks movies that are in ENGLISH. The oscars use the same standard for foreign pictures.

About 90-95 of the top 100 will be films made before 1975.

Why the fuck are they even in the top 400 of all-time? Honestly...fucking SHREK?!?!?
those aren't top 400 of all time. those are 400 choices. they put in MANY recent titles as the focus  with just re-using the old 100 classics. it was structured to give more chances to vote in newer films, not that they are the top 400.

It's basically previous 100 + 250  (with about 50 or so new older ones) new films

not really. 85-90% of the first 100 will still be on this list. There is basically only 10-15 open slots.
