They made me read Bartolome de las Casas in highschool and college. I know disease did most of the work by the numbers but the encomienda system went through slaves like they were nothing. Just unspeakable cruelty even for that time.
In Mexico and other countries the holiday is called Día de la Raza to celebrate the origin of the mestizo race and latin american society in general so the holiday is, in principle, much more respectful to the people that live there even if it's about the same event. British colonialism, though, did not produce a mixed majority population because they explicitly had an indigenous policy of segregation and extermination. Columbus Day has no value here except to celebrate an apocalyptic event.
