Yeah, definitely noticing a "ok, it's over, time to get back to life" vibe locally lately in So Cal.

The only good thing from this is suddenly I'm able to get TP and soap and supplies because I guess fewer people are hoarding now that some think it's over?
Eye of the cyclone kind of situation, time to hoard up!  :rash

I'll miss this social distance policy once it's gone, ngl. :hitler

Governor said stay at home over and moving to a 21-day 'phase 1 reopening' starting Friday. We aren't planning on just turning on the switch like a lot of people around here seem prepared to do, we are really back at the beginning where the biggest worry is infecting our parents, etc.

We gave it a try for a few months at least. I don't think anyone is really preparing for a 'new normal' type of thing among people that are yelling to drop all restrictions. The people that refuse to wear face masks within reason bug me.

Here I am on my second day of return to work after being furloughed, and already I’ve settled back into that attitude of “I should’ve taken the day off”.  That month of being a welfare queen on the dole was glorious for chipping away at my games backlog, I should’ve told my work I couldn’t return yet.  I just started getting into Baten Kaitos  :-\

I'm being smart myself as I live with two rather old parents, one with diabetes. They're very healthy outside of my dad's diabetes in general and have been cautious but I rather not risk it.

That said, phone sex and sexting can only do so much :fbm

Well... for some historical context. The 1918 pandemic had a second wave, and the second wave was deadlier than the first. They believe the virus mutated between the first and second wave, and that was the reason for a much higher death toll in the second wave. A second wave of Covid is believed to be very likely.

I can tell you that having now suckled at the government teet with CARE act enhancements: fewer things have tasted so sweet.  I was actually netting more income per pay period compared to my actual job, because of that added 600 a week.

Admittedly though, it is nice to have something to work on again besides regular personal bullshit.

It is believed, the second wave was caused by mutations that happened in the trenches of WWI. As the war was winding down, those troops returned back home and infected friends and family.

We don't have anything that resembles the forced incubators that trench warfare was.

so yeah, i'm sure there will still be people who will go out on random dates just like there will be people who walk outside without masks. but there are going to be a LOT who aren't going to do that. i just don't see a world where anyone who is scared to not put on some kind of face covering going outside would be open to swapping spit with a random stranger. i recall reading some poll that said one of the big dating websites (ok cupid i think?) dropped traffic -unsurprisingly- by over 90%!

True, but we have global travel which is way more efficient and affordable. People simply travel more than they did back in 1918.

Either way experts are saying a second wave is likely, so.

Bleh, had a rare low work day so instead spent the last few hours arguing with friends about Covid vs FREEDOM since none of my friends irl are taking this as seriously as say, most people on this forum.

Just feels like a waste of time. No one listens.

This is why I mostly don't argue anymore outside of work. Just feels like a waste of time.  :-\

Yeah.

2nd and 3rd waves of coronavirus deaths are now very likely, according to German researchers

https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-second-and-third-wave-of-pandemic-is-now-likely-2020-5?r=US&IR=T

They believe it will keep going until about 60 to 70% of the population has it.

It's one of the times when stupidity directly leads to death, without decades of delay like for instance when you smoke. Except for the fact that most victims are outside of their reproductive age, Darwin would approve.

And why shouldn't the one nation that has spent decades trying to make its own population as uneducated as possible be hit hardest? You reap what you sow.

It all depends on how well governments can contain new outbreaks.

An employee of mine got a call today from the health services because one of his friends has been tested positive and he has been told to self-isolate at home as a precaution.
He was originally planning to go to the birthday of his mother tomorrow and those plans he obviously cancelled. It just shows how easily things can spread if you are unaware and why testing is important.

While some no doubt is due to stupidity, you shouldnt forget the many people working, who have to work during corona. Nurses, doctors, care takers at both retirement homes, in the handicap departments. or fucking grocery store workers. There is just a risk working those places, even if you try to be careful.

That's why the number must be managable not only for hospitals.
Local german health authorities hired a shitload of people that basically only follow those chains. Phone people and get the contact information of those they've been in contact with and call them as well.
In general there have been alot of restrictions for certain buisiness types. For example my mother works in a bakery shop and they've got a small cafe as well. They were allowed to open a few tables, but people have to write down their adress and shit.

Situations like these were pretty much impossible 4 weeks ago. Now it's managable and we'll see how it will play out.

One of the biggest surprises I'm seeing are decently educated and intelligent people that are still hand wringing about "well, it's not that bad and I do miss my KBBQ so I hope they open next week so I can make reservations with all my friends at my table even if I have to pretend they're all family members to get seated together"

I guess we'll carry on doing it the way we are doing it until it comes back in a big way. If there is a second wave though, in terms of managing it, I guess one question would be: to what ends exactly?

Maybe to relieve pressure on the hospitals. Of course we could aim to increase capacity also. The thing about potential second and even third waves of this though is, it's not going away until a large part of the population has it. Or we have a vaccine. Minus a vaccine though, we're essentially just dragging this out over a longer period. That's all. And there will be some benefits to that I imagine, but also some consequences to that.

I guess my point is, the aim of managing the virus can't be entirely about limiting the number of infected, it may not go away until a certain number of people are infected.

You know, you think you're safe living in a nice blue state of intelligent people like CA and then you find out that if you live in a red republican controlled county you're still fucked!  -_-

All these protests in OC and San Diego, the big red spots of old white supremacy in CA -_-

Notice how no one is doing these dumbass protests in central LA.

That's because Central LA is getting hit too hard with the Rona!

so yeah, i'm sure there will still be people who will go out on random dates just like there will be people who walk outside without masks. but there are going to be a LOT who aren't going to do that. i just don't see a world where anyone who is scared to not put on some kind of face covering going outside would be open to swapping spit with a random stranger. i recall reading some poll that said one of the big dating websites (ok cupid i think?) dropped traffic -unsurprisingly- by over 90%!

Probably was OKCupid, that app has been run into the ground pretty much. Tinder at least gave everyone access to free "passport" to encourage you to window shop around the world. Coffee Meets Bagel is doing twice a week virtual group dates (if you live in a big city anyhow). There was a point like, mid March/early April where I felt like I was getting more matches and conversations, but I think everyone is just kinda tired of it all right now. I probably would've asked a few girls to meet up if there was no pandemic, but I haven't really felt up to do virtual dates.

Spain had a lot of COVID-19 cases so this puts the nail in the coffin of herd immunity  :doge

Madrid alone had 65k cases on a population of about 6 million.
Which means that 11%, 1 in 10 or about 600k people have the antibodies.

Spain in total has a population of about 50 million people, of which about 2.5 million have antibodies if the 5% is accurate.
The idea that certain scientists had that in the UK for example about 60% of the populace would already be immune has gone right out the window.
