Who is to judge this? I don't care about these games, don't play them, think Valve can do whatever they want in their own store. But this argument is very arbitrary considering Era considers ANY "anime-like" character to look like a minor. Most of the characters in that image can look like 20yo, I don't know how they behave in the actual game and have no interest n playing it, but just going by artistic style is hard - the clothes seem normal too.

I think people can judge this is a case-per-case thing, but I don't agree with the logic behind this with anime "artstyle" (that isn't a singular thing). Feels like only way people won't say this is if a character looks like a photorealistic 30-year old. We mock the 182912 year old dragon thing because it's obviously crazy, but most of these characters I'm seeing here (not the Nekopara ones lol) can easily be said to be 18. I also hate "but in Japan" whataboutisms, but it really can be said that people there age less than the common caucasian person (the general image we have for people in the west), so it gets even harder to judge this purely based on style when these character are made by people with different standards for body and aging.

One thing I do wonder though, is how these western people judge cartoon characters' age. From my experience people tend to underestimate Asian people's age. Does that happen to virtue characters?

One thing with the "style" argument is, it's just inherently easier for smaller companies to draw their characters in that style. There's vastly less detail, less highlights, and less color and shading in general in the style that a lot of these people getting hit by this employ. I do agree that this style inherently draws these characters closer to that range where things look either muddy, or the characters are outright obviously rendered to be underage. That's a problem, and nobody should disagree with that. But we should also realize that the style in general leans this way, it's been employed for a while, and to force a change there is going to 1) make most of these games impossible to "fix" in a reasonable timeframe, 2) reduce the likelihood of games of this ilk coming out (I don't play them, but I'm not out to shit on someone's parade if they do and enjoy them), and 3) essentially force a larger question in general about anime, Japanese studios, etc., as we then need to start thinking about how they play into all that. It's a huge bag of worms.

The only thing I don't want to see is indy developers get fucked over by this unfairly. If it means a shift in how they do things, within reason, then so be it, but I think we should watch this unfold very carefully and question the intentions and side-effects of this.

I fucking loved the Senran Kagura games. Just stupid fun brawling with way OTT special moves and constant (if largely pointless) levelling up. They’re fairly funny too, in a charming sexual assault kinda way. I’ll admit that the transformation scenes for the flat chested younger looking characters are fucked up, but you skip the transformation scenes anyway to get back to battering some big-titted she-witch.

It’s a bit of a shame that they have such a provocative ‘skin’ because it ain’t easy to get an arena brawler fix nowadays.

Y’know, I don’t actually know which genres I enjoy. I watched Initial D because I’ll watch anything that shows love to cars and car culture. I tend to enjoy darker films / series, and I fucking despise anything that has very clear ‘good’ and ‘bad’ guys. Ideally, I like works where the good guy is actually just the least bad guy. I watch very little on TV as a result. So I like horror / psychologically uncomfortable works, but they need to have a degree of ‘grey area’ to them.

There is NO WAY I would be as passionate as I am about Final Fantasy XIV, Tera, Blade and Soul, Touhou Project, VRChat, and so forth, if it weren't for the moe factor.
