The war in Afghanistan, if it is indeed about reducing "the Taliban" to a minor political power, has been lost many years ago now. No one even pretend to cares anymore in the political leadership yet there's still over 10k US troops there (plus allies) bleeding blood and treasure. I suspect the US could maybe retire tomorrow and let it all crumble the day after and the hit would be somewhat negligible with the domestic crowd as long as it's not a total shitshow like the fall of Saigon. Yeah you'll have a bunch of AK wielding scary brown dudes celebrating, mocking the US, burning flags and whatnot, those images will sting the public but as a layman it seems like this has been inevitable for a while and it will be 5 years from now.
I don't think anything point to Trump particularly caring about Afghanistan or walking the walk of some of the implicit promises (that were evidently overblown by some desperately looking for a silver lining) of challenging the statu quo of current military presence overseas.
