Yeah I get most of you arent anime/manga/asian cinema fans and I wont get into it too deeply on here (well maybe with bep and mr. G) but this is pretty fucking stupid and it's shitting on the fans of the original content as 99.9% of hollywood remakes of eastern properties do. All they do is alienate the built in user base and make potential new fans laugh at the absurdity of it all. Either make something new from the millions of scripts flying around Hollywood or get the fuck out with this shit trend of fucking around with stuff people care about.

My thoughts exactly. Its one of the 5 animu i watched when I was 12 and thought animu looked bad ass, dont understand a thing that went on but i loved neo tokyo and the opening soundtrack.

The only other animu ive seen is 3x3 eyes one Macross uguu and recently Spurited Away and Howls Moving Castle

It has some really great moments, and the first half, IMO, is fantastic. I mean, the scene where Tetsuo escapes from his cell is so goddamn great. I feel that it kinda falls apart towards the end though.

Tetsuo demolishes a tank with his MIND and rips off a piece from a flag or something to make a CAPE.

The thing about Akira -- as in, the film -- is that it's one awesome action set piece after another. If you ignore the plot and concentrate on the action scenes, it is INSANELY awesome. Even then, I don't see what's so wrong the plot in general.

The manga is considerably better, better paced and better developed, but Akira is a great movie.

It's much like Commando. Commando's plot is distinguished mentally-challenged. But it's so fucking awesome you don't give a shit.

I mean, look what happens in these two hours:

- iconic bike chase
- creepy kids who look like they're 100 years old
- riots
- dude shooting dogs, and getting shot up with a billion bullets
- crazy psychic kid destroys buildings with his MIND
- creepy government experiments
- ANOTHER gang fight
- the assault on the government compound in the sewers, holy shit the MUSIC
- tetsuo's milk/dream nightmare and the awakening of his powers
- tetsuo's rampage on his old friends.
- mass pandomonium and riots.
- tetsuo grabs a fucking cape and nukes a tank, demolishes bridges.
- laser from space.
- kaneda vs tetsuo
- tetsuo morphs into a blob monster
- keneda vs tetsuo AGAIN
- "Kaneda! Kaori's dead! I can't feel her heartbeat!"

Akira OWNS. It is jam-packed with so much COOL SHIT. Whoever tries to dismiss the film because of "story" and "plot" is missing the entire fucking point, and even if they do have a point, this does not discount the utter insanity that occurs in the film.

that's what akira is.  really nice to look at, gorgeous animation and aesthetic, but it's plain dull.  posting clips of the action scenes in 3 minute chunks does more than anything I can say.  it's like loading screens of an incomplete and poorly told story to get to a few scenes of action.  that's not a good movie.  might as well fast forward through most of the movie.

How is Akira dull? How are these scenes poorly told? What's wrong with The Expendables? It was great. Not every action movie has to be like the next one. Certain action films have a certain methodology to their action. Speed is nothing like Aliens, but it's still fantastic. What do you think about martial arts movies? They are, for the most part, the very definition of what you just described. Go watch Ong Bak. Each scene is an excuse to show off Tony Jaa being awesome. Its plot and story are irrelevant, they're just excuses to justify the awesome shit. In comparison, watch Ong Bak 2, where every single piece of action adds something to the whole and is a companion piece to the story.

You really think that in Jackie Chan films, for instance, they really want to tell a story about whatever you're justifying? Fuck no, we want to see Jackie Chan fall off the side of a fucking building and survive the fall. The story is only an excuse for setting up the fall to begin with. That is the beauty of the craft. The same train of thought extends to Akira.

You build up a ridiculous standard for action films for which few action movies will ever be able to meet.

That's cool.  I'd say Ghost in the Shell is more like Blade Runner, but that's just my opinion

Ong Bak is like this. Dialogue is sparse. Every thing is open for an excuse for Tony Jaa to show off his athletic prowess. By your definitions, this means it's not a good movie.



Ong Bak 2 is like this. Every single action scene in the film, from beginning to end, is by extension, a form of character or plot development. This does not mean that Ong Bak 2 is a good movie because of this fact whereas OB1 isn't.

to be honest for a second, there's nothing wrong with having standards even for the movies you mentioned.  I mention The Expendables because I don't think there is any value in it, even as a distraction.  I don't have many other examples because I like most movies I watch.  I think I even said the second half of Transformers 3 was entertaining in the movie thread.  Nothing wrong with bad movies if you get something out of it, but as far as distractions go, there're endless options out there.

in general if I don't watch one of these summer movies with friends at the theater, I'll only check them out based on feedback of friends or people here.  So I appreciate people mentioning which of these movies are worth watching.  also, whether it matters or not, which it probably doesn't, I never said I disliked Akira.  I just think it's a bad movie is all.

Kaneda and Tetsuo
Tetsuo's relationship with the rest of the gang
Kaede and Ryu
The scientist and the children
Tetsuo and the children
Kaori and Tetsuo
The general

What part of the story is unappealing? The characters? They're developed quite nicely. The plot? I think that's debatable. I don't know what people want when they complain about Akira's story telling. Do you want more Akira, as in the title character? What exactly is wrong with it? Seems to me most complaints towards Akira's story telling come entirely from expectations.
