JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (KSNT) – In a joint press conference with McDonald’s Monday night, the Herington Police Chief said the coffee cup incident was a hoax.

Chief Brian Hornaday said McDonald’s didn’t have anything to do with writing obscenities on an officer’s coffee, and that it was “fabricated by a police officer no longer employed with the agency.”

“Now, this is absolutely a black eye on law enforcement,” Hornaday said.

The officer, who won’t be identified since it is a “personnel matter,” told the chief it was meant to be a joke. Hornaday said the officer was with the department for two months.

Biden talked about how unemployed miners and coal workers who have lost their jobs in recent years can find “jobs of the future” if they “learn to program.” Referencing his role in a Barack Obama-era programming skills initiative in schools, Biden commented that “Anybody who can go down 3000 feet in a mine can sure as hell learn to program as well... Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program, for God’s sake!”

This has been Biden's whole shtick, like, forever. During the Obama years his thing was that once the Tea Party stuff died down that Republicans would be able to start working with Obama and things would get done. For the past couple years his thing has been that it's all Trump's fault and that once Trump is gone that Republicans will settle down and be willing to work with Democrats again to get things done. He honestly believes that the Republican party is just a few steps from going back to the "good old days" of the 80s/90s where you could be a smart centrist and everybody got along even if they disagreed.

tl;dr lol third-way centrism

Ten years later were still waiting for the tea party to die down, 🤦‍♂️

I really don't think he's ever characterized it that way. His general campaign has always been about looking at lots of different ways to make a changing economy work better for everyone, with UBI as a flagship proposal but not the magic solution to every problem.

A year into this primary shit, I think the only thing that has set back any discourse is the internet army of Sanders socialists like timu with terminal brain disease playing king of the hill politics.

"I'll give you $1,000 so you can pay the rent! (But not give you a living wage)"
$1000 a month + $8.75/hr job comes out to $15/hr, which is not much higher than the minimum wage right now. It might even be better than a minimum wage increase because it doesn't destroy a bunch of vulnerable jobs and it also helps people outside the workforce, discouraged workers, the involuntary homeless, and so on. I'm sorry that you didn't do the math or think about this very hard but that seems to be characteristic of your posts in general.

No, that's all you know him for. Don't blame others for your own ignorance.

"I'll give you $1,000 a month to fuck off."
Landlords: "THANKS FOR THE $1,000 A MONTH FROM OUR RENTERS, YANG! *raises rent*"
I'll make this as brief as I'm able to.

Rent is rather reasonable (on par with mortgages) outside of major metropolitan areas. Inside metropolitan areas, rent is a catastrophe because zoning laws and other reasons severely constrain supply. In a market, price is determined by the upper end of demand, not the lower end (i.e. the price is just high enough to clear the market for housing units but no higher).

Consider any reasonable distribution of income in, say, Brooklyn. Add $1k a month to everyone's income. At the upper end of the distribution people are normally paying a third to half of their income in rent (for other people, they are paying more than that, because housing is a non-negotiable need). For someone making $100,000, let's say this is like $3,500 a month (42% of their monthly income). If they're making an extra $1000 a month in UBI, that's a 12% increase in nominal income, and it only amounts to less than a third of their rent... since everyone's incomes went up by the same amount, in order to maintain their previous claim on supply, they merely need to keep paying whatever proportion of income they were paying before. 42% of their new monthly income is $3849 a month, a $300 rise in rent. Thus, their incomes still rose even though they were the price setting income earners. For people way lower on the income scale, families crammed into small apartments, or sharing units with three other people they barely know, they're paying the same increase in rent but their incomes went up way more than 10%. For a migrant family it's conceivable that their household income just went up 50% or 75%. Their lives are suddenly livable, even in New York.

So, yes, I agree with you that rent will rise because housing is supremely inelastic and a basic necessity, and that's just the nature of how rentiers can set prices. But they won't just suck up the exact amount of the basic income. And in any other place in the country where the housing market doesn't look like the lifeboat scene in Titanic, rents won't raise nearly as much. Basic income would decimate poverty as we know it.

I don't think Shosta understands Landlords on a whole will try to extract as much wealth from their tenants as much as possible because the biggest companies don't see theirs as humans or even customers, but a product that be used and replaced if and when they're unable to pay.

Hot take: Yang has actually set back The Discourse™ on UBI by positioning it as the one-quick-fix to the ills of capitalism instead of a tool in a broader class politics

Counter hot-take: Yang's gotten traction for UBI by presenting a nakedly redistributive policy as a Disruptive Solution.

What other candidate has taken it up, or even spoken positively about it? It's been ghettoized as the meme policy that neets like

I thought we were doing hot takes here. What was the state of The Discourse on UBI before his campaign?

Probably about the same place as a jobs guarantee (at least they were and are often tied together). And where Bernie has endorsed a jobs guarantee and Warren has toyed with the idea, both major left-wing candidates have spoken negatively about UBI (yes none of these things will happen in any hypothetical next administration but were moving the Overton Window here, you know).

I'm not against U.B.I. (in fact, I'm all for it), but Yang has no solution for ANYTHING beyond "lol I'll give you $1,000 to fuck off while I do nothing about it lol." It's infuriating as someone that wants U.B.I. to be implemented but implemented well.

So what you're saying is that you support UBI in spirit, but...

Hardly. I support other forms that aren't Yangs U.B.I. plan. EG: Norway (IIRC, they're the first one to attempt it/pilot it). Yang's is a bastardized form. Hardly the same "spirit." But do go on and try a smarmy smart-ass comment, old-man.
