My issue is they need to be more clear up front about what their future business model will be and I have a feeling they are not going to be.
I'm not going to buy a $60 dollar game and then later buy another $60 dollar pack to keep up with the new heroes. I'm not going to buy a premium priced game and then get looped into a never ending string of moba style DLC I need to purchase to keep up with the scene. That is one of my problems with Destiny (among others)
Isnt ut kind of the same with any shooter now?
I get your point though, kind of what makes me not commit to one shooter anymore. By the time id start to get the hang of it id have to buy dlc
With most traditional shooters, its normally fairly straight up about what they are adding. COD always adds 4 map packs. Battlefield does the same and adds in a few guns. But in nearly all of these cases none of what they add is especially game changing. It's more about I'm sick of the 12 base maps that were in the game and here are 20 more for you to play on if you want that.
Overwatch feels a lot more like a MOBA model where the meta changes around which heroes are more useful and powerful based around the current balancing. And MOBA's add in characters all the time. So to me this feels like the worst of both worlds. Its got the free to play potential of a never ending flow of DLC like a moba has but eveybody is also being forced to pay $60 dollars and then maybe have to pay for extra characters on top of that. At least in LoL you can grind out in game currency and "buy" any character for free and DOTA just straight up lets you use any character and makes their money off cosmetics.
Also games like DOTA and LoL are able to guarantee a massive base of players of all skill levels because of their free to play status. Once you put a game behind a paywall that immediately narrows the player pool. Probably won't be an issue on PC or early on but on console and after people start to move on to other games even temporarily, it may be noticeable.
Of course it all depends on how Blizzard is handling all this which is why they should be upfront about it imo instead of being all coy and pretending like they don't know how they have it planned for the future.
