Come on!
Watching the television, it becomes increasingly apparent that she was barely vetted at all.
Why oh why didn't McCain pick Romney?
Palin is a complete disaster. I'd certainly rather be watching Obama commercials of them calling each other ass fucks than having to listen to the media's double standard comparing a potential VP's experience and being ready to be POTUS to Obama actually being POTUS.
Why is it a double standard when one party is touting experience and readiness to lead above everything else? It's a very valid question to ask why Palin - especially when you consider McCain's age and the possibility that his very inexperienced veep could take the reins - was chosen over more qualified candidates.
Watching the television, it becomes increasingly apparent that she was barely vetted at all.
seems Sarah Palin hated America so much she wished to be out of it:

smh
I believe this would be his reply:Watching the television, it becomes increasingly apparent that she was barely vetted at all.
I'd love to see someone ask McCain if he'd pick a Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, or National Security Advisor the same way he picked his Vice President.

So are they gonna let Ron Paul speak?
They really should let Ron Paul speak.
O SNAP!
Ron Paul probably wasn't invited to speak because the Republicans are trying hard not to embarass themselves.
You know what would make my day? If the delegates that support Ron Paul did something drastic at the convention.
I mean shit, Mccain would have gotten a huge bounce by choosing paul instead of Palin.
Listening to Lieberman speak is somewhat like what I would imagine it to be like to give a lecture to a bunch of idiot college freshman, while all the time continually sprinkling talcum powder in my mouth.
He really is the most pa-fucking-thetic man to ever run for office. Just think how many people in the crowd screamed "dirty attractive Jewish person" at the tv screen just 8 short years ago.
I am just curious, why do you guys hate republicans?
'I am just curious, why do you guys hate republicans?
Well, you see, (and this is probably gonna seem pretty silly) it's more or less based on the whole, "bringing the country to the brink of ruin for almost a decade while practicing the most dirty, shameless, and intellectually dishonest political moves," thing.
I am just curious, why do you guys hate republicans?
I am just curious, why do you guys hate republicans?1. obviously this forum is filled with people who are either liberal, or non conservative. I am one of them. So obviously we are kinda biased.
Why was Thompson more excited in that speech than in his entire campaign?
Pure sophistry. You are clearly a divider, and probably hate our country's freedoms.I am just curious, why do you guys hate republicans?
do you have ANY knowledge of the current leaders of the republican party
i don't hate them -- in fact, i have many republican family members and friends -- but ultimately i am for the abolishment of any state support for religion or specifically religious values, and i am for the heavy taxation of the wealthiest 5% and corporations -- and for a greater equalization/distribution of wages overall. i am also heavily pro-environment and pro-regulation. this naturally puts me at odds with the current republican party, even though a share a few issues with them.
Welp, that was enough to double the bet with my brother that Obama will win.
$200 now...
McCain has this in the bag, Triumph. I'm not sure where this confidence is coming from. Obama had a SMALL and diminishing bump from his convention, and I'm positive that all those white folks with one black friend who told the phone pollster that they will vote Obama will cling to their closet racist ways come Election Day.
thankfully, willco is so consistently wrong in his political predictions that this bolsters my faith
Federwang, you're an out of touch, retail working, lapsed Republican Jew. When I want to know what's new for the DS I haven't bothered to play with since I beat EO2, I'll ask your opinion. In the meantime, I'll remind you that you thought Hillary would be the nominee in like March. Shaddup.

He and Maurice should form a non-thinking tank.

I'd like to note the following:
Everyone thought Hillary still had it in the bag back then and I wasn't even rooting for her!
I'm not voting for the Republican ticket.
Last, but not least, if you honestly believed that, you wouldn't be so defensive. Your rebuttal tells me what you're really hiding - fear. Fear that you will live under four more years of a Republican President. Fear that our Vice President will be hot enough to masturbate to. Fear that YOU will be drafted to fight in WORLD WAR 2.5!
Afraid, you are.

Dude, I've never been so ecstatic with the state of politics in America IN MY LIFE. This is the beginning of the end of the Republican party as a meaningful national party. In ten years they will be as meaningful as the Whigs.
Sadly Beardo's right. Until 2050 or so there will always be a political party for the rich white people and country bumpkins. Oh and the greedy, can't forget them..::)
Either that or it could just be because the rich white people, the country bumpkins and the greedy hold all the power right now. I'm just sayin' Occams razor and all that.Sadly Beardo's right. The alaska seceding accusations has been recalled by the NY times. You just made yourself look like a dumb ass in front of the in laws.
The chairwoman of an Alaskan political party that advocates a vote on the state’s succession from the union said Tuesday that she had been mistaken when she said Gov. Sarah Palin was a member of the group.
A front-page story in The New York Times on Tuesday and articles in other news media reported that Ms. Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party for two years in the 1990’s.
The information in the Times article was based on a statement issued Monday night by Lynette Clark, the party’s chairwoman, who said that Ms. Palin joined the party in 1994 and in 1996 changed her registration to Republican.
On Tuesday night, Ms. Clark said that her initial statement was incorrect and had been based on erroneous information provided by another member of the party whom she declined to identify. The McCain campaign also disputed the Times report, saying that Ms. Palin had been registered consistently as a Republican.
After checking the party’s archives, Ms. Clark said that she could find no documentation that Governor Palin had been a member of the party. She said Ms. Palin attended the party’s 1994 and 2006 conventions and provided a video-taped address as governor to the 2008 convention.

America's still pretty racist, it's just out of fashion. I think the only reason Obama won most of the caucuses was that most people there didn't want their neighbors to think they are racist. So I bet when they get into their private polling booth and nobody's looking they'll fill in a bubble for the white man. Later when people ask who they voted for, they'll say Obama.
Then again I'm feeling really cynical today.

Looks like the NYT needs to do some better vetting themselves. :lol
And lol at Obama people knocking her on experience, if she isn't qualified to be VP then he certainly isn't qualified to be president.
Slightly OT, but why in gods name would Alaska like to be apart from the rest of the US?
QuoteAnd lol at Obama people knocking her on experience, if she isn't qualified to be VP then he certainly isn't qualified to be president.
I don't buy that for a second. I mean, in the legit politics of it all, the argument can't be made, but for us talking here, it's pretty ridiculous. Obama's been a politician since the early-mid 90s, in a state government (Illinois, which was in fucked situations before he arrived) AND national government. Palin has been a PTA member, a mayor of some 9000 people, and the GOVERNOR OF ALASKA, one of the most "that's apart of our country?" states in the nation. My high school principal is more experienced than her, going by what the mindset these Republicans have. She would get nearly 1000 new students each year. In fact, I'd rather see her on the ticket than this pyscho.
The NYT is one of the biggest jokes in all of news. The fact anyone uses it as a source in any debate is :lol
So, what we all knew has now been acknowledged: Mayor McMooseburger wasn't vetted until the day before McCain picked her. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/02/AR2008090203462.html?hpid%3Dtopnews&sub=AR) If you want to call it "vetting".
What's more amazing to me is how if they say something enough, it becomes true. MAVERICK REFORMER! MAVERICK REFORMER!
Also, today's breaking story is that in 2007 as Gov. she fired the entire State Agriculture and Conservation Board and replaced 'em with her cronies, ostensibly to save a state run dairy. Of course, in two months the dairy folded and ended up costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Roughly $20 million worth of dairy equipment was sold off at a steep discount to a Palin crony who now, remarkably, runs a dairy that he started with the help of a Ted Steven's earmark.
But yeah, she's gonna go in and clean up Washington. MAVERICK REFORMER!
Wow...I didn't see that. Do you have a link to that or was it on tv?
One thing's true about this time of the year during elections - I get shit for shit done at work.
most of my problems with the current republican party and john mccain's candidacy can be summed up with their pick of palin. she tried to have` a librarian ban books from a public library on the basis that people who voted for her found the language offensive. when the librarian didn't comply, Palin tried to have her fired.
and that's "just" a fucking librarian she tried to push around.
I'm sorry but after the blatant illegal politicization of all kinds of federal services in the past 8 years, the last thing I want is someone who thinks she wields this kind of power anywhere near public office.
this palin nomination is a goldmine <3

siamesedreamer, explain this!
She is being eviscerated because it is too damn easy to do. Her not being "like them" is only one reason.
Dollars to donuts says McCain had little to nothing to do with picking her.
then who did? Rove is too smart for this.
MCCAIN THE MAVERICK! WHAT'S HE GONNA DO NEXT!Sad thing is, this is a Dan Rather type statement. Technically false, but scarily accurate.
"McCain assigns pet border collie as new campaign manager; claims pink space laser 'talked to him'"
The media is absolutely evicerating her. She's not "their type" of woman, so they're throwing everything they can at the wall to see what sticks. Its utterly ridiculous. Wait for the new National Enquirer story to hit. This was to be expected, put a good looking woman up there and you're going to get rumours of affairs, hypocritical stances in her personal life, feelings she doesn't deserve it etc.
That said, McCain walked right into this. He shouldn't have picked her with such a weak vetting.
quite the converse: the problem is that mccain picked her with almost zero consultation with his strategy team -- probably because he wants to be in a gilf threesome with her and cindy. he's dumb enough to think he can pick up the "18 million cracks" (and with an abortion hardliner, lulzy lulz) at the very least.
I will say this - Obama has been treated with kid gloves this entire campaign. The Wright story would have ended any other politician's chances. But, they completely swept it under the rug because of his "totally awesome/bestest race speech EVA!!!".Absolutely right
is she a good pick, sd? do you think she's a top-tier choice for a struggling campaign?
HAGEE!!!

You have GOT to be fucking joking. To use one example here, headline tally for the Wright story, which was purely a matter of association and not an error of Obamas...

You have GOT to be fucking joking. To use one example here, headline tally for the Wright story, which was purely a matter of association and not an error of Obamas (nor was it anywhere near as bad as the fascist shit that is coming out of the evangelical base at the moment), far eclipsed the tally for headlines regarding the Clinton "I was in a war zone! Oh wait, I'm a liar!" shit. Yet, perhaps unsurprisingly, people would still bitch about Obama supposedly being treated with silk gloves. And apparently, that has stuck. Could it be that there simply isn't as much shit worth throwing on Obama as there might be on other candidates? The persistence among journalists to craft a device out of the Wright "scandal" suggests that there is no lack of interest in taking off the gloves.
She's from Alaska. Alaska=Energy. Jesus didn't you go to school?
Could someone explain to me exactly how Mayor McMooseburger is going to solve our energy woes? I keep hearing she's a wiz on the issue, but no one ever explains HOW.

I keep hearing she's a wiz on the issue, but no one ever explains HOW.Just look at John Mccain's plan to pay off the deficit. There is none. Don't ask for plans or facts. These things are anathemas to the republican party. Just saying you'll do it is good enough. Just ask SD. ;)
alaska also has rich fields of tiberium ore and vespene gasThat really isn't a nice thing to call the North Koreans.
exactly the necessary 20000 units of each we need to build a joint strike force of mammoth tanks and protoss zealots to defeat the russian-zerg alliance

holy shit, why am i praising the new republic? thanks to them, i actually read ken pollack's paranoid fantasies!
There was a proposal a few years back to tap into Canada's existing pipelines, but it was shot down because it would have cost Alaskans a bigger check.
The place I'm working at researched nuclear power and wanted to build a plant. The reason why they never went through with it is because that there is a huge shortage of nuclear engineers or those who are capable of handling a potential nuclear crisis, nuclear power machinery gouging companies (they wanted a 20% profit margin at least), extensive board reviews and regulations after Three Mile Island. In all, a new plant is going to cost $18 billion minimum.
You're going to find very few companies willing to put up the capital and the immense risk since if it fails, it would wipe them out. Of course, I may have been fed a line of BS but even that cost was half that amount, it is still a huge risk.
this is 1984: the tv miniseries. everything is bs.

I simply can't imagine how any intelligent person could honestly accept the things being said tonight. I see the Repubs on PoliGAF actually saying that she's the female Obama, that Obama is getting owned, and that she's an effective and excellent speaker.

democrats seek to win by inspriing and bringing people together. Seeking the better part of people.
Republicans seek to win by mocking and dividing people. Seeking the worse part of people.
Tonight was a penultimate example.
Luckily there will be only one more example of Republicans trying to divide the country!
sd, you're not allowed to mock groups as being shallow in their politics until you either
1) take some responsibility for your racism
or
2) show a glimmer of frontal lobe activity
Delegates said they were enthralled by Ms. Palin. "I think she’s great; she’s giving it back to the Democrats for all the sorry things they’ve said about her and about America," said Anita Bargas, a delegate from Angleton, Tex. "She’s a conservative, and she has a great sense of humor."
touche!! :lolI said it over there I'll say it over here.

Its true. I'm a racist. To the core. Been a member of the Forsyth County KKK since I was two. My dad was Grand Wizrd for a period of time back in the 90s. My brother is now head of the Cross Burning committee. My wife helps knit confederate flag throws. Good times.

I don't think so.
There's a difference between raising funds for primaries and for the general but now that Obama's the official nominee everything goes to the general. That should mean they can spend it any time from now until election day.
All you had to do was own your actions and I would have let you off the hook. "That was an awful thing to say and I'm sorry and I don't think of myself as a racist but I need to do better." Something like that and I'd drop it.
I know where im sendin some moneys then
A Great Speech, For Both Bases
St. Paul delegates are giddy with Sarah Palin’s speech. The mood is buoyant, enlivened, energized. It’s a party. There are revelers. The faces shine with joy and pleasure at a convention finally fully underway. Their VP nominee did it – she hit it out of the park. There is joy in Mudville, here on the ground.
And it worked wonders – for the Dems.
In the past several hours, Dems I’ve spoken with and who’ve flooded my inbox are energized. A woman friend and Democrat who had not worked for Obama’s campaign: “I am volunteering tomorrow.” An Obama organizer who was operating on fumes five months ago: “They are not getting away with this. 10 hours of call time tomorrow.” A shorter read of the mood: “Let’s get it on.”
The mockery went too far. They played the “Obama doesn’t love America, just himself” card, over and over and over. For people already inclined to believe that (i.e., the hardcore Republican base), the speech was a smashing success. Maybe they will work a little harder, volunteer a few more hours, dig a little deeper into their pockets. But so will partisan Dems, who are far more plugged into watching the election coverage.
So my reaction: St. Paul loved this speech… and so did Chicago. Palin swung for the fences, mocking the very notion of community organizing. So did Giuliani. This was the day after “Service” was the theme, and Republicans fell all over themselves praising their party’s commitment to give back to the community. Jarring.
Fire up both bases equally, it’s not even close. Obama wins going away. In 2008, there are so many more Democrats, numerically.
So, everyone on both partisan sides has reason to celebrate tonight. Republicans can celebrate a true champion in the VP role. Dems can celebrate because the numbers don’t lie, and no energy occurs in a vacuum. Republicans can’t tie this year.
While we all wondered to ourselves what might make a speech masculine or feminine, no one batted an eye at the underlying revelation: that the campaign was writing the nominee's speech before knowing who the nominee would be.

Palin: Iraq war 'a task that is from God' (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080903/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_palin_iraq_war)
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."
In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it "God's will."
...
"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."
...
"God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.
HOLY SHIT!
Yeah, last night I was in utter disbelief. I bought an Obama shirt and water bottle and will be donating money to him and another Dem running for Congress. Admittedly, I don't follow Congress (especially outside of Michigan or the largest states) very much. Any suggestions? I don't want to toss money to a shit Dem but I would like to give support to a candidate who could help Obama's cause or get in the way of McCain's should he win.
This RNC is inspiring me in a way much different than last week's amazing DNC.
I'm sorry, if the media doesn't blast her for those comments considering the endless amount of bickering that Obama got from just merely associating with a fundie - then that's bullshit.

Also, plz list exactly why you now love Mayor McMooseburger. Without referencing her speech. I want actual details, not "she talk purty".
I think Team Media overplayed their hand a LITTLE.
Obama's campaign has been extraordinarily disciplined regarding this pick and the surrounding contraversy.
Who do you think was feeding Team Media?

You do understand what they could (or, had they been of another sort, would) be saying, right? Come on SD, don't go joke character on us, this place needs you in tip top condition.
Regarding the debate on energy policy and drilling vs. not drilling, is anyone advocating the position of simply banning speculation in the oil market, making it so that oil cannot be traded in futures?
If you're going to be upset at this sort of stuff you should stay away from politics. This is as nice as it gets.
It's very clear that you dont understand it and call it evil to wrap your head around it. Why can't you guys have a simple political discussion without resorting to name calling. It's like you guys are running for Jr. High class offices.

When a party fully commits themselves and sinks low enough to full-on rely on LIES and INSULTS to try and win an eldection, I think the smarter masses and have the right to name calling.

Its undisciplined in two ways:
1) It was a tonedeaf attack on small town America given Obama's previous "clinging" comments
2) It opened the experience door (notice how it didin't mention she's now a governor)
All they had to do was say something about it being an historic pick for the GOP and congratulate her on the nomination. Instead, they tried to be cute.

So basically you met evilbore at the gym.
As someone who lives in the shadow of the largest city in the country, I'm asking this. Why is small town america so damn important? Don't most people live in cities and suburbs rather than small rural communities?
LOLz...y'all are funny. :lol
siamesedreamer, explain this!
The media is absolutely evicerating her. She's not "their type" of woman, so they're throwing everything they can at the wall to see what sticks. Its utterly ridiculous. Wait for the new National Enquirer story to hit.
That said, McCain walked right into this. He shouldn't have picked her with such a weak vetting.
MSNBC is saying McCain is doing "town hall"-like speech tonight. No podium. He'll walk around holding the microphone. They've changed the stage around - like a giant T. He's been rehearsing the speech for six weeks now.
Different to say the least...

And of course just yesterday you were disgusted with her actual record and "accomplishments". But now that she's proven the remarkable feat is possible, that a Republican Governor can rile up a room full of Republicans, apparently your brain has been checked at the door. Or maybe you're just thinking with that other head...
I just, I can't see how what happened with SD happened. He went from being someone on the right that I could at least pay attention to to someone that fell apart and turned into an erection-popping, teenage Hannity. It seemed like he was just parodying the wackos that share a party with him.
I really wish there were more reasonable conservatives here and on GAF. Unfortunately, the better qualities of even intelligent republicans get thrown to the wayside when their backs are against wall in an election. I'd like to think if/when we have a liberal equivalent of McCain/Palin (and Bush/Cheney) that I'd be able to see the mess for what it really is.
LOLz...y'all are funny. :lol
Ben Stein's reaction there echoes the kind of reaction I would expect to see from most paleoconservatives. The GOP, having fully purged its libertarian wing, has placed the small-government paleocons are next on the chopping block and Ben Stein sorta gets that.
People like like Huckabee, Palin, and Bush-big government conservatives with strong social conservative positions-are the near future of the GOP.

Honestly tho, people responsible for the last 8 years aren't going to be rational anyhow.
Palin's speech went over pretty big in the mainstream.

This coming from someone who only refers to Palin as Titty McMoosburger.
What do you think would happen if someone called Obama. Afro Hussain McDarkie??
Don't even try to tell anyone that you want to be fair. All you are interested in doing is lame ad hominems and calling people racist. Then when the right wing posters respond the same way, they are evil...

Apology for what? I'm totally confused.
All I said is that despite Triumph lampooning the whole ordeal, the speech did go over pretty big. Not just with the convention, but with the press. I'm looking at CNN's Report Card on the speech and it's all A's and one B (Damn you, Begalis!). Chuck Todd called her the conservatives' Obama. Even Matthews had good words. Fox News was already using her to proselytize for days.
I thought considering all the dirt dug up on her, including the stuff of real substance (like her wacky sermons, federal earmarks, facist leanings, abuse of political power, etc.), that McCain was in for a long, embarassing ride.
But she came out in one night and managed to shout over all of that, and really strike a chord, for better or worse.
The last part depends on your party affiliation.
Sorry I got confused I thought Beardo needed to apologize (over the AIP thing) to you it was Zero Hero.Quote from: ronito link=topic=24472.msg630504#msg630504Also look, it's Beardo and Wilco, perhaps we'll get that apology now.

We've still yet to see her bosom, so whether or not they're good enough for my vote is up in the air!:lol :lol
Do you think Joe Biden is shitting himself thinking about the debates? Have you ever tried to argue with a middle-aged soccer mom? Nobody ever wins. I half expect Joe to say something and she'll storm off the podium and drive away to Alaska.
Jesus Christ you vapid mouthbreather, it's fucking Boobies McMooseburger. It's even right there under my fucking username.
They think she's "formidable" but nothing in her speech was anything of substance. The Democratic talking point is that she never spoke about middle class families or health care or things that are important - she just slung mud.
Republicans are going, "FUK YEAH! TAKE THAT OBAMA YOU SELF RIGHETOUS A-HOLE!"
Plus, the expectations are so low tonight that she’ll almost certainly meet them. Following her speech, the press will probably offer gushing praise — in part because of low expectations, in part as penance for its (appropriately) critical coverage.
I think he pretty much nailed it. The press always feels a need to balance coverage of major party candidates and Palin was taking such a beating that she was able to surprise people by being a competent public speaker with a teleprompter.
I found it comical last night right after her speech some flapping heads were saying her speech was "every bit as good as Obama's in 2004".
Really? Go watch that speech again, dummies.

Are you going to be able to handle it if McCain/Palin wins? Seriously, I'm asking as someone seriously worried about your mental health.
I'm not asking as someone wishing for it (quite the contrary), but you seem so invested in this election and I've got to say, if the Republicans keep up this momentum - they could win. I think I could survive four more years, because McCain will no doubt die, letting Palin rise to power as our new eternal Dear Leader as we begin an imperialistic, faith-based march towards Armageddon. And we will all be dead by then (from The Great Purge) - Yay!

I believe it was accounting, Beardo.
I don't think that it would be the end of the world if McCain were to be elected, but I think it would be the end of many 401k's. There is no way the U.S. can sustain the war.
You are right though FA, it would sting alot considering how good of a candidate Obama is and how shitty Kerry was. I personally think that alot of people know that something isn't right and the Obama catalyst rings true for alot of people, regardless of political affiliation.

It's probably something else. Accountants right out of college are some of the most sought after well paid graduates at the moment.
Ive never understood the Republicans Lower Taxes but Lots of War. War costs money. We cant just not ask for money from the people for a war without some sector of our infrastructre falling apart. There comes a point where those risk free treasury bills, which are financing the war right now, become pretty risky.
Were the last 4 years really that bad?
Well, other than
A) Finding out we were lied to in order to start a war
B) Having the economy go into the shitter ($4 gas, housing crisis, banks failing lolz)
C) Not addressing the global climate crisis (which is real, despite what you might think)
D) Watching the govt. sit on it's hands as a major American city drowned
E) Doing fuck all towards developing a policy on alternative energy sources so we don't fund those turrirsts we're fighting
F) Having the Justice dept. be politicized ("what makes you excited to serve George W. Bush")
G) Torturing people
H) Denying the people we torture the right of Habeas Corpus
I) Having lobbyists and members of Congress go to jail for corruption
it's been just peachy fucking keen. I'm sure I missed a couple, you guys feel free to add to the list.

I think I might seriously look at going abroad or something (not permanently leaving the country, but traveling and taking a job outside the country). I don't know if I could watch this country deteriorate much more.
Here's my big grievances with the Republican talking points:
1. The Big Government lie. Where is this conservative, limited government they're talking about? Why would Obama conflict with their utopian society of small government? The Bush Administration saw government expand! It's huge!
2. Energy policies. What energy policy do they really endorse? Clean energy or drilling? Drilling has no immediate impact. Does repeating that it DOES have immediate impact over and over simply make it so. It's a flat out lie. Why are people buying that? And what is the blueprint for clean energy? Is there one? Hydrogen fuel cells are decades away from functional use, why are not subsidizing electric cars, wind power, solar power, etc.?
3. Taxes. Obama will raise your taxes! If you're rich! I never get this. People have it in their head, that Republicans lower taxes and Democrats raise taxes. If anything Democrats raise taxes for people who make more and Republicans lower taxes for people who make more. The people who make less never get shit.
I hate this attitude. Let's just run away!
I love this country, I'm going to stay here and stand up for what I believe in.
RNC scoffing at citizen involvement in galvanizing the process really was like, wtf.
So here is what Giuliani and Palin didn't know: Obama was working for
a group of churches that were concerned about their parishioners, many
of whom had been laid off when the steel mills closed on the south
side of Chicago. They hired Obama to help those stunned people recover
and get the services they needed--job training, help with housing and
so forth--from the local government. It was, dare I say it, the Lord's
work--the sort of mission Jesus preached (as opposed to the war in
Iraq, which Palin described as a "task from God.")
This is what Palin and Giuliani were mocking. They were making fun of
a young man's decision "to serve a cause greater than himself," in the
words of John McCain. They were, therefore, mocking one of their
candidate's favorite messages. Obama served the poor for three years,
then went to law school. To describe this service--the first thing he
did out of college, the sort of service every college-educated
American should perform, in some form or other--as anything other than
noble is cheap and tawdry and cynical in the extreme.
Perhaps La Pasionaria of the Northern Slope didn't know this when she
read the words they gave her. But Giuliani--a profoundly lapsed
Catholic, who must have met more than a few religious folk toiling in
the inner cities--should have known. ("I don't even know what that
is," he sneered.") What a shameful performance.
Unless the city you live in is Wasilla, Alaska, I am pretty sure there are probably more than fifteen qualified candidates, as well!
The economy is rough, dude. I've been interviewing people with degrees for entry level management for months. I have in my employ, two people with full-time jobs. One of them with a degree.
I'm not sure what world you're living in, dude, but it's not the REAL WORLD.

Not really. You're pretty oblivious to the plight of the unemployed in this country. Do you think a degree makes you bulletproof to hard times? This is Flame-level of ignorance.
What's next, the whole, "In America, if you work hard and use elbow grease, you can accomplish anything!"
You don't take into account people's responsibilities whatsoever.
Also, cities can have millions of people, thousands of whom have degrees. This is ridiculous.
1.5 years of being unemployed? And somehow it's the presidents fault? I see 15 accountant jobs listed in my city's newspaper website just for today alone. There aren't even 15 jobs listed between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids in one week combined, so I would love to know this place where you live that apparently has abundant jobs.

Now, I'd like it if we weren't all up in their business (and if this global economy didn't dictate that we be all up in their business), but I'd also really appreciate it if, despite their level of hatred towards us, we weren't the first people they called upon as soon as they got themselves into some trouble.
Go ahead, bomb yourselves into oblivion, jackholes. We'll still be by to pick up our share of the oil.

This seems to be the J McCain school of thought. Bocsius, you live in a global world. You depend on other nations not only for fuel, but cheap food, cheap labor and cheap manufacturing. America is not the powerhouse it was and if the rest of the nations wanna flip a switch and play embargo, we're cooked. Playing nice on the global playground is ESSENTIAL for the future.

Let's not go crazy. Embargo? Over what, exactly? Not caring what they think? I think this whole "oh no, dirty euros hate us, whatever will we do" mentality has gone a bit too far, myself.
And I wouldn't call it a McCain view at all. I say the rest of the world is on their own. We'll trade and that's about it. Got some violence going on in your region? Good luck with that. We'll trade with your neighbors in the interim.
Alas, I realize that's not a feasible solution. Stupid global economy and all.

QuoteObama's campaign announced it had raised roughly $8 million from more than 130,000 donors since Palin delivered her speech Wednesday night.
Why would the Republicans spend a whole night of their convention attacking ordinary people?
With the nation watching, the Republicans mocked, dismissed, and actually laughed out loud at Americans who engage in community service and organizing.
Our convention was different. We gave the stage to everyday Americans who hunger for change and stepped up to make phone calls, knock on doors, and raise money in small amounts in their communities.
You may have missed it, but we also showed the country a video with the faces and voices of those organizers, volunteers, and donors from every corner of the country.
Watch the video and make a donation of $25 or more now to show that in this election, ordinary people will make their voices heard.
Watch the video now

What you didn't hear from the Republicans at their convention is a single new idea about how to make the healthcare system work, get our economy moving for the middle class, or improve education.
Just attacks -- on me, and on you.
But what the McCain attack squad doesn't understand is that people like you -- who devote part of their busy lives to organizing and building their communities -- have the power to change this country.
With your help, that's exactly what we're going to do.
Thank you,
Barack

i'm still pretty sure palin is gonna be the albatross that fells the mccain campaign. credit where credit is due: she DID galvanize the grassroots republican yokels who didn't much like mccain, because they love the earthy drinkin' buddy gwb junior types and the one-of-our-kin soccer moms like palin and hate "uppity" types be they strangely-named negroes or carpetbagger-lookin' old white men. as tnr (and mandark) observed, liberals (and thus most democrats) want a president that is more akin to an ideal manager or ceo -- someone more statesman-like; and most conservatives want a president that is more like an ideal drinking buddy and/or church leader -- one of their own.
Reagan was an ideal drinking buddy.

Olberman has breaking news: Palin went to 6 different colleges. OMG the SCANDAL!!! He read it as if it was something that needs further investigation.

man, beardo, you sure don't like it when the democrats act like republicans, but i appreciate that you do expect better from us than you

Well, it was at least funny! I think that's what the GOP base is missing about her speech last night- she didn't come off as funny or spunky, but hateful. Better luck in four years.
but don't you see
saying that a member of the nra and fundamentalist christian has guns and is a fundamentalist, is just as racist as calling a black harvard graduate and senator a ghetto rapper who likes to eats up dat fried chick'n and dem wa'melons
beardo, are you saying that sarah palin isn't a gun-toting nutbar pentecostal

and my point, beardo, was that the republicans prefer cariacatures to nuance, and you delightedly proved me correct
Republican presidential nominee will hit his rival on experience, but also call for an end to “constant partisan rancor”-- Wish he told Palin. I can't tell who McCain is supposed to be anymore. I see Palin and Co. blast obama for helping people and lol democrats, then I see him go up with his stupid dual thumbs up saying he's gonna be nice starting now!
Alaska has a population less than a million, spread around a bunch of ice and mountains. People don't even know what time it is!
More people live in my city than Alaska. More people live in the fucking suburbs of my city than Alaska.I'll have you both know that we are waaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of the rest of the world in dog mushing. All the top dog mushers in the flipping world are Alaskan.
those polar bears and moose ain't gonna shoot themselvesShe's way ahead of you, she sued the government to keep those polar bears off the endangerd species list. She ain't satisfied with killing them one at a time, she wants them all off the face of the earth within her first term. Stephen Colbert himself couldn't be more anti-bear then she is.
when a ninthing 17 year old gets it, your party is kinda sorta tracking towards tragedy
I am 19 and almost a half thank you very much. Not to pile on here, but to paraphrase Larry Miller, the only people who count ages in halves are under 10 or over 100.
i think he is planting the tongue into the cheek, eskimo manMe sorry, me not understand white man's humor. Make too many jokes about fucking Nick Cave.
Did you watch Obama on THE FACTOR, Triumph?
The Giants only lead by 9 points!
9/11 video was bad.
You know, observing this from the perspective of a Euro dude with some interest in international politics and who has now spent the past 8 years in the United States, the US political circus has proven itself to be more of a political parody, or farce, than I had ever imagined it'd be. The rhetoric, the arguments, the shit-tossing, the remarkable lack of subtlety and equal lack of interest in context... what I had once assumed was a greatly exaggerated, fictional for-TV representation of US national and international politics and party dealings, that really pales in comparison to the real thing.
"Let's not leave another generation to clean up our mess! Let's accomplish this by drilling for oil in or near wildlife reservations, and near the largest fresh water reserve on the planet!"
How about we do what is needed to fix poor performing schools you dumb fuck!
Glad I'm skipping this. I played some last guy instead.
Restore our EARTH WITH DRILLING DRILL DRILL:lol
What happened to the party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt?
Relying on anti-intellectual, religious voters who believe that men walked amongst dinosaurs might be a good short term electoral strategy, but that reliance in the long-term makes your party so distinguished mentally-challenged that it's unfit to run the fictional America portrayed in Idiocracy.
McCain IS A MAVRICK!!
McCain IS A MAVRICK!!
I heard he was in Vietnam or something? Right?
Sometimes I wish he never got out of that camp alive. :shh

I don't have the time nor the energy to deal with incessant personal attacks.
We're never going to agree on most things, so what's the point of subjecting myself to them? I've got better things to do and so do y'all - like talking about games and other shit.

Thanks for posting this. I love this clip so much, more than his convention speech even. The decision to forsake all the false outrage of American politics is at least party political but it feels so nice not to be condescended to for once.
On the community organizers thing: can you imagine the shitstorm if someone had been that dismissive of soldiers? I don't have much of a point besides Palin and Rudy being dicks and our country being creepily militarized.
Most of the people at the convention probably don't know what community organizers do and the phrase smacks of bleeding heart liberalness in the same way "social justice" does.
They're basically mocking the idea of any sense of moral obligation to help others as being wimpy and naive.
