You can definitely tell that it's going to be really fun game, what with the melancholic piano music and reverse chronological order of the trailer's narrative in slow-motion. Dare I sat it? Oscar-worthy? :omg

I have no idea what the game will be like. It could be a shitty L4D clone, but that trailer is one of the best.

good trailer, but trying to inject emotion into a game where you're splitting open the skulls of the undead with axes while cackling with your buddies over xbl is sort of a lost cause

the home video thing at the very end was pretty cliche, though

Glanced at the gaf thread and it sounds like it'll be a first person brawler.  Most games like that are great! (just don't mention Zeno Clash).

Techland also developed Call of Jaurez: Bound in Blood, which was supposed to be decent. Not much else in their portfolio to inspire a great deal of confidence, however.

Watched the other vids and it seems like a tech demo for an engine. Probably wrong though. Looks fantastic.

This game was announced like 5 years ago.
Yeah I was wondering what had happened to it. The premise always sounded cool. Glad to see it hasn't been canceled.

Trailer's great, but any game which has taken 5 years to produce is suffering in some way.
Title: Re: Dead Island
Post by: HyperZoneWasAwesome on February 17, 2011, 01:22:38 PM
I'd bet anything this was put on hiatus after their Call of Juarez games became huge sellers for Ubi Soft.

Also, I'd love to see Deep Silver produce a big seller, they've been a scrappy little publisher for awhile now, they deserve to stick around.

First and foremost, Techland didn’t make the Dead Island trailer — according to Develop, Scottish studio Axis Animation was in charge of production. Presumably the two teams worked together on the teaser, but we don’t know from whence the ideas sprung.

I’m reminded of 2007, back when Square Enix finally released a trailer for the long-delayed, highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII. The trailer was flashy and gorgeous, hyping up even the most casual of RPG fans. Then, after several years filled with delays, the game was a resounding disappointment. The trailer gave a false impression of the game, making it seem like a project that was well along in development when in fact it was still flailing to find a direction.

Wat? Jaded games industry journalist is jaded? Where's the news flash here?

Yeah, I know what I said above, and five years is a long time no matter how you slice it, but there is no connection between this and the epic travesty of FF XIII.

Title: Re: Dead Island

Quote
Dead Island is Fallout 3 with zombies. Plenty of people are going to compare it to Dead Rising (as you can create weapons) and Left 4 Dead (as the action is first-person and good for four players online), but when I finally got past the game's obtuse opening and less than stellar cutscenes, I found a world rife with quests, interesting environments, and a character progression system that had me begging for more hours in the day. In short, Dead Island's a rough around the edges role-playing game, and I dug it.

Quote
You rarely feel safe in Dead Island, and that's how a zombie game should be. You have a limited stamina bar, so you can't run or swing your weapon forever. Med kits were few and far between in my experience, so scavenging for energy drinks and fruit -- which have to be used at that moment and can't be stored -- became part of the experience. Weapons degrade as you use them, so finding a "legendary" weapon was exciting, but not as exciting as finding a workbench to keep weapons in tip-top shape.

Quote
Thankfully, joining games is easy. When you're playing, a pop-up message will notify you if a player is close to you and joinable. If I see you sign on, I can invite you in. Of course, experience levels play into this. Players can only join the games of people who are equal or lesser levels. I can't be level 31 and about to win the game and have a level 1 player join me. It might sound depressing, but there are tons of character slots, so having a character for different sessions shouldn't be too tough. Plus, you can always switch your game to single-player if you just want to be left alone.

And the complaints:

Quote
Is Dead Island perfect? No. Far from it. As much as I lauded it, Dead Island is rough around the edges and that's sure to turn a lot of people off. First-person melee combat doesn't feel natural right away. Sometimes textures take their time loading in, I'd describe every cutscene as "stiff," and the visual flaws like hands going through doors and weird mini-game meters made me laugh. Still, presentation doesn't make a game, experiences do. And they are packed into Dead Island.

Overall:

Quote
But the game gets a lot right. There is a huge world to explore, thousands of zombies to kill, and tons of side quests to take. Here on the other side of a 25-hour playthrough -- where I skipped a lot of side quests after Act 1 -- I'm anxious to get back into Dead Island, and despite the game's flaws, that's not something I say often.

8.0/10

PC gamers, press Y while you're playing. You all of a sudden turn into a ghost and you can no clip anywhere around the world. Press Y again and you plop back into existence wherever you ghost flew to. I can't believe this made it into the game. PATCH THIS SHIT ASAP BEFORE I ABUSE IT TO DEATH!

zomg!

So, yeah, this game pretty much owns my soul. Even though the controls feels kind of weird, there's little glitches all over [though nothing major that I've seen so far], and kind of that general feel of a lack of polish, I love this game. There's tons of stuff to do everywhere, tons of loot to snatch up, and running over zombies with a car is pretty dang awesome. But none of that compares to kicking zombies in the face, which is the most awesome thing ever.

I played for nearly two hours and wasn't bothered too much by anything, but that's still hilarious. :lol

Edit: Okay, I've played for four hours now. Nothing I've come across is broken, there aren't gaping holes in the code that you can easily fall through and ruin your game forever. I've seen some weird glitches here and there, twice the minimap has messed up and gone completely blank, but that's about it. Heck, it's probably less buggy/more optomised than the average Obsidian game.

Edit 2: There was a 117MB download at midnight last night and another 76MB download just a few minutes ago. Patches!

Edit 3: Okay, now I'm mad. That latest patch broke my savegame [with its four hours of playtime], I've still got my items but the quests are all completely gone. Yeah, that's wonderful.

game is completely unplayable for me. tons of stuttering and frame hiccups. it's holding at around 80-100fps but the stuttering is unbearable. also the game locks up every few seconds.

there doesn't seem to be a way to lock the FPS as well.

Turns out I lost all my progress through the story, but it's put me back at the beginning of the prologue with my levels and items intact. Basically, I'm on New Game+ now despite having not finished the game. That's something, I guess.

Edit: Spoke too soon. It took all my weapons away after that little opening bit. *le sigh*

I think the latest patch actually made the performance WORSE. :lol

Edit: Yep, it's almost completely unplayable now. It stutters constantly and, after about 10-15 minutes, starts freezing up for seconds at a time that gets worse and worse the longer you play. This is biggest "good jon" I've seen in a long time.

Nah. At most companies accidentally releasing a broken, pre-alpha build of a game to retail would be a catastrophe but in Poland, it's a Tuesday.

wtf is this? it's moves like the surface of water.

edit: worst thing about the PC version is that there are no analog controls for m/k. you only get that when you use a controller. that is really dumb because the melee combat is the same as how it's done in Mount and Blade and it works fine with mouse/keyboard.

by analog control do you mean like Daggerfall where you drag and make gestures to attack?

I read you could do it on the consoles, AitD or RAD style.  Does the PC at least have 360 pad support?

According to Techland, the final version of the game is now on Steam. Yeah, I guess the massive memory leak that makes the game freeze up for several seconds all the time is just a FEATURE.  ::)

more or less, yeah. that is, if it was adapted to mouse and keyboard it would be. like i said it's the same combat system as in Mount and Blade.
and yes, the game supports a 360 controller. with the controller you press L2 to ready your weapon then flick the right analog stick from left to right, right to left, up to down, down to up, and diagonals. and your weapon will swipe accordingly. it's a good system that allows you to target specific limbs for dismemberment.

Okay, for the people experiencing really bad stuttering and freezes: go into the options and set the online component to "LAN". That seems to fix it. Of course, now you can't play online.

Edit: Played for nearly an hour and half with the online component turned off, ran just fine. SMH

This is true, and I'm maybe I'm being unfair, but every time one of these clusterfucks ships it discourages people from buying other games on PC. Stick a disc in a console, and the damned thing is running inside two minutes. Manufacturer/Publisher QA is a PITA but it's there for a reason.

Dead Island honestly runs fine for me aside from having to force vsync which is, at most, annoying. I'm having a lot of fun with the level up/explore/quest approach to zombie gaming- Question though- how do I figure out where to go for quests on the map. I can set waypoints and I see fast travel points- but am I supposed to just use the information provided by the quest giver to find the place? For example I wandered around looking for the lifeguard tower didnt see it on the map and didnt see any kind of indicator. I assume the grey arrow indicates North?

I'm having fun and really enjoying it, but I'm kind of annoyed by how easy it is. Even the quests that are supposed to be "VERY HARD" are the same as the easy ones just longer and take up more distance.

It gets a lot harder once you make it to the city.

Dead Island has its glitches, flaws, and little issues that are kind of annoying, but most of that stuff doesn't really bother me too much. However, there is one aspect of the game that I really just hate: scaling. All zombies in the game scale to your level, without exception. So it never feels like you're getting any stronger, it actually feels like you get weaker and weaker as the game goes on because the zombies become more aggressive, they come in bigger packs, and it feels like you can take less and less hits before you're killed. It's bad design. Period.

The controversially named ability - "FeministWhorePurna" - was found within the Data0.pak\Data\default_player_setup.scr file by Steam forum goers.

Feminist Whore is thought to have become Gender Wars, a skill that allows Purna - in the final game - an extra 15 per cent damage against men.

"It obviously violates professional and ethical standards at Techland and should never have happened," Blazej Krakowiak, international brand manager, told Eurogamer. "We're investigating this right now and we'll issue a statement later.

So I took L.A. NAW back to Gamestop (the only good thing about them is their 7 day return policy on used games) and picked this up for PS3.  So far it's pretty cool, seems like a mix of Fallout/Borderlands/Far Cry 2, with some awkward voice acting.  I switched to digital fighting because analog style was too much work after the first couple of times, haha.  Pop-in, micro-freezing when a bunch of stuff loads, frame rate slows, PS3.

Sure you're not accidentally switching them out for weapons on the ground? I've done that a time or two.

Not that I seriously doubt that the game isn't glitching out and erasing your weapons, however.
Title: Re: Dead Island
Post by: Eel O'Brian on September 11, 2011, 01:08:34 AM
i may have, but i thought you had to hold it to swap out weapons, they really need an "are you SURE" pop up for swapping seeing as how they have one for just about everything else you do in the game

that was an awesome wrench, too, lasted forever and did hella damage :(

also i have noticed that the zombies are getting in a lot of cheap shots the higher i level
Title: Re: Dead Island
Post by: Great Rumbler on September 11, 2011, 01:26:29 AM
Yeah, zombies get way more aggressive at the higher levels. They'll run at your more often, hit you, lunge at you, push you away, and absorb hits. The whole leveling system is pretty broken, it's cool getting new weapons and skills but you never feel like you're actually getting any stronger.

if you swap the weapon than it just drops to the ground. you can just pick it back up. also don't forget you have a 12 slot inventory of weapons (didn't realize this until about 4 hours in). so when you pick stuff up it goes there until it's full, then you're replacing things.

I love how the enemy animation transitions into rag-doll. and how it adds a lot of tactical things you can do.

like how if you do a horizontal swipe at their face or body, a lot of the time the force will result in the zombz getting spun around. at that point you can kick them in their backside resulting in the zombz falling to the ground.

Title: Re: Dead Island

I've been playing the game with the 360 controller since by default you can't use the analog fight style with mouse/keyboard

until now!

found this on gaf:

follow the instructions there
download link:

it works perfectly. it's more responsive and accurate than using the 360 controller. like the video said, it breathes new life into the game. so good.

by that time you should be upgrading your weapons, increasing the durability, thus making repairs cheaper since they won't be as broke. i'm a bit further on than you and i'm always bleeding money from repairs/dying but it's never more than how much i get for side-quest rewards.

You can get a Steam code on amazon for $40 so I bit today. Holy fuck. This may be my GOTY...well, until Skyrim and SR3, anyway. Fuck. It's like they combined everything I like in games:

1. Zombies
2. First-person
3. Open world
4. Skill trees
5. Co-op
6. Breasts

How do I set my game to be closed. Randoms keep showing up and while I enjoy co-op, I don't care for dudes just popping up.

When you're at the main menu, go to the "Options" and then the "Online" section. You can set how many private slots there are in your game. Or you can just set it to LAN-only.

Analog control is the fuckin business. Nail a dude in the chest, he goes down, he starts getting up, kick him in the ass and he's flattened. Jump to his head, raise the shovel above your head, and BAM.

This game looks absolutely insane on the PC, BTW. I can't believe this is from the same team that made Call of Juarez.

just finished the game

ending was garbage. throwing multiple infected zombz at you at the same time is not fun.

aside from that killing zombz was fun all the way through. pretty good open world. quests lines could have had a little more variety in the objectives.
storyline was real bad. i hated every person in the game.

but it's stiill a lot of fun over all

Ok so, this game treats saves really weird. I was playing with my usual partner, everything was smooth. But fast forward, and I join another guy's game to work on soe of the achievements. I jump out, and I decide to go back to what me and my partner were doing. My file has suddenly converted as if I was still at the beginning of the game (saying I was on Chapter 3, when I was on 5).

I think I sorted it out when I jumped back in my partner's game... but Borderlands definitely did not do it that way.

I heard this game has loot and is more like Borderlands than L4D?

I thought it was just another L4D clone.

No, it's not a L4D clone. Yes, it's like Borderlands.

respawns in the game are kind of shitty, as well, i died three times in a row because the fucking respawn kept dropping me either right next to a suicider or in the middle of a bunch of infected

I got to the cutscene at City Hall, and they were talking about the Police Station. Are you supposed to go there at some point? All I remember is the loudspeaker saying that it was taken over by the looters. Are there quests there?

it has a lot of problems and reeks of eurojank, but i still like it (i'd probably like it a lot more in co-op as there are whole sections of the game which are clearly designed to be handled by more than one person, like the bullshitty part i mentioned above)

Popular zombie-basher Dead Island is still top of the UK games chart.

Dead Island sold more copies in two weeks than any other game published by Deep Silver has managed in a lifetime.

Dead Island is also now outselling PlayStation 3 exclusive Resistance 3 on the PS3 platform alone.

another brilliant design decision:  no maps inside the buildings

also, lost an awesome 700+ damage magnum pistol via glitch, added it to jin's storage so i could have an open inventory slot to pick up something else, and it just disappeared the next time i checked

that's okay, i decided at that moment to use their jank busted shit to my advantage - i now own two copies of all my best weapons via the weapon dupe glitch

Okay, just beat it.  The last few hours of the game are just frustrating, waves of undead coming at you, obviously designed for co-op play.  The ending is kind of a big shrug, as I didn't give a crap about any of the characters -

spoiler (click to show/hide)
when Jin died all I could think was "Fuck, there goes all my stuff." :lol

Hopefully they'll fix a lot of the more miserable aspects of the game in the sequel (scale it down a bit for single player, tie the story together better so there are fewer wtf leaps in logic, tone down the repetitious boss encounters, etc).  Also, did we really need to see the animation and hear the character eat every single  time you pick up an energy drink/fruit/snack?  Those things give such a tiny health boost that you have to consume 3-5 of them to make a difference, and watching the "grab/gulp/smack" animation gets really, really old.  I like it when devs know you are fully educated as to what eating and drinking look like and just give you the health when you click on it.  Who gives a shit if it's "realistic?"

Over all, I enjoyed it, although there were times (especially midway through the city section and towards the very end) that I had to force myself to continue.  I never ran into the save bug, but I experienced several other bugs throughout the game.

Just finished it after about 22 hours, I think I did all of the side missions I could find and was level 36 or so. LOLworthy terrible ending but when the core game mechanic of fucking up zombies is so good I can almost forgive it.

I didn't like fighting in sewers though. Fighting in a swanky ass resort and hotel was cool, I can play CoD if I want to shoot mans in Iraqi toilets.

Just started playing on PC. The game looks beautiful. I played 2 hours before I realized I could kick. SO now I'm dumping skill points into kicking. I just got my first spiked stick so I'm ready for another round tonight. Slaying zombies has never felt more satisfying than with this targeting system. It makes combat more intimate and way more disgusting.  :yuck

Title: Re: Dead Island
Post by: Great Rumbler on December 24, 2011, 01:38:14 PM
I really didn't like the level scaling in Dead Island, just made the whole game feel like a long grind with your character actually seeming to get weaker as the game went on.

Edit: It may only be for co-op, I'm not sure.
Title: Re: Dead Island

The patch addressed a lot of issues with scaling and damage, along with XP.
Title: Re: Dead Island
Post by: Stoney Mason on December 24, 2011, 03:52:42 PM
I turned on the level scaling but I have no idea how the game is balanced so I don't know if that will be annoying or what. I'll be playing it co-op with one other person. Odd option to stick in for booting up the game for the very first time.
Title: Re: Dead Island
Post by: fistfulofmetal on December 24, 2011, 04:03:41 PM
so level scaling is turned off by default now? because when i played it, no matter what level you where every zombie in the game was either the same, slightly lower, or slightly higher level. so it defeated the purpose of "leveling".

Title: Re: Dead Island
Post by: Stoney Mason on December 24, 2011, 04:32:57 PM
I think it's on by default (recommended) although I'm assuming the ability to turn that off is a new option.
Title: Re: Dead Island
Post by: fistfulofmetal on December 24, 2011, 09:39:08 PM
I would turn it off. It was really annoying because you would go back to beginner zones and all the zombies would still be mad strong. the fun in RPG for me is returning to previous areas and being mad powerful.

it also made the new game + kinda broken because the enemies were still scaled to your level and took the same amount of melee hits to kill, your weapons degraded at the same rate... but the quests didn't scale and you got very little money. so you were constantly bleeding money from having to repair your weapons and the quests werent giving you enough to recoup the loss
