How bout you post the old list to foster some god-damned discussion?
standard?afi's top 100 is the standard in the industry. it is the most prestigious film "award" (if being on a list is an award) outside the oscars, easily.
Can't wait to see LOTR on there :bowI bet fellowship will make the list
afi's top 100 is the standard in the industry. it is the most prestigious film "award" (if being on a list is an award) outside the oscars, easily.there's a high chance crash will be on there so I personally don't see how anybody could give a shit.
btw the list is hosted by MORGAN FREEMAN
oscars gave crash best picture winner and people still give a shit about the oscars, they will still give a shit about afi and I am pretty damn sure crash WON'T make the list. It will still be 90% movies from before 1980's.afi's top 100 is the standard in the industry. it is the most prestigious film "award" (if being on a list is an award) outside the oscars, easily.there's a high chance crash will be on there so I personally don't see how anybody could give a shit.

not even a small shit.

It will still be 90% movies from before 1980's.That comparison doesn't really make sense since crash was basically a pity oscar that nobody really cared about. The only worthwhile reason I could see for oscar's is betting on what will win and no, you never bet on what you like.
Uh..dudes...it's on the list of nominee's for the top 100. AFI has listed it as able to win. It was part of the 1000 films sent to critics to pick the top 100 from.
This is the American Film Institute list. Lord of the Rings was made in New Zealand with a mostly non-American cast, what makes you guys think it's going to be on this list?
Just because it was financed by New Line? That's dumb.because it was filmed in english I believe. I saw british films on the list when it was shown months back.
Just because it was financed by New Line? That's dumb. I thought AFI was a bit more discriminating about that sort of thing. The Third Man is on the list.

The Third Man should be on the BFI list, if anything.
I suspected it before, but now I'm sure. AFI is bullshit. I mean, you only have to look at their other lists like "100 years...100 screams" and "100 years...100 laughs." EL OH EL
This list is for the ignorant dumbasses who'll watch the AFI special on TV, and the fact that they're including options like SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE only cements my belief. I prefer the Sight and Sound list, it lets the filmmakers and critics fill out the questionnaires with whatever movies they want, no matter how famous, cheesy, or obscure. Erin Brockovich is on the list. . .
It's just a bad list of candidates. There are probably actually 250 viable candidates on the list, and half of them are ol or silent shit that few will vote for these days.
There's Something About Mary is quality cinema.
I quit looking, but there are tons of really stupid things on there. All 3 LOTR movies are on it. Rocky Horror (which isn't an American movie, and probably shouldn't even be on the list) is there. POTC 1 is on it. Shrek. There's Something About Mary. Spider-Man 2. Jurassic Park. American Beauty. A Clockwork Orange (I guess this is debatable--Kubrick is an American, but it was written by a brit, the money was british, and the cast and crew were british). Paul Faggis's Crash is indeed on the list.
No Big Lebowski, no sale.
I'm looking at the old list of nominees...that website has the new one, TVC?
No Big Lebowski, no sale. Why would it be? Coen Brothers have done better films. O Brother, Fargo, & Raising Arizona.
Harry Potter is on that list. Jesus Christ.
you guys are idiots. Do you honestly think harry potter or something about mary will be on the top 100 of all time?
Also the AFI picks movies that are in ENGLISH. The oscars use the same standard for foreign pictures.

About 90-95 of the top 100 will be films made before 1975.
:lol PD you were the one who used the afi top 100 to show what important films you have seen in a thread here. :punch
Am I the only one that doesnt like the Wizard of Oz at all?
I didnt see Brazil. Is it considered a foreign movie?
those aren't top 400 of all time. those are 400 choices. they put in MANY recent titles as the focus with just re-using the old 100 classics. it was structured to give more chances to vote in newer films, not that they are the top 400.you guys are idiots. Why the fuck are they even in the top 400 of all-time? Honestly...fucking SHREK?!?!?
blade runner broke the top 100!!! :bow
not really. 85-90% of the first 100 will still be on this list. There is basically only 10-15 open slots.blade runner broke the top 100!!! :bow
SHOCKING considering it had a 1 in 4 chance!
PD better be watching thishe said in aim a couple hours ago he was. I wonder if The Godfather will top Citizen Kane this time. It would be awesome just because the dvd of citizen kane has a bunch of stuff on it with "AFI's #1 FILM OF ALL TIME"
WAIT DID THEY ACTUALLY PUT THE SIXTH SENSE ON THE LIST
In 20 years I can definitely seeing Godfather at #1. There was a time when many believed Gone With the Wind was the best film ever, and when those people died out the new group of film sages nominated Citizen Kane.and 20 year's after that schindler's list will likely be the #1 due to the spielberg generation being the elder film elites.

I am fairly certain Brazil was at least on the ballot for the new 100. I would also not classify it as an American film. All the writers, the director, and the main cast (aside from Dinero) are brits. The producers were Americans, I think. I guess it would fall into the category of "international" movies, like the Bond flicks.

to continue the gaf meme, in before brandnew whines about snobs
again, honky, those are the movies i ENJOY the most, not the movies i think are the best. much of what i enjoy has very little or no artistic credibility, although the two often do intersect. my ability to appreciate something on a technical or artistic level is largely separate from raw personal appeal, which is often some inscrutable concoction of nostalgia, geek preference, sentimental and timing.
Casablanca should be in any top 5.

Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot should be in any top 5. See? I can do it too.
again, duders, pd's quoting that list out of context. i listed the ten movies that, at the time, i considered "comfort" movies -- movies i watch, well-made or otherwise, when i want something familiar and unchallenging. i think spielberg's a mediocre director, but raiders is easily the #1 movie i turn to when i wanna just pop something in and be amused for two hours. sure, it has some questionable performances, several cliched transitions, and hokey dialogue, but it's fun in a purely subjective way. i don't watch it to be challenged or engaged on an academic or artistic level, where appreciation is tantamount and indulgence is secondary; i watch it cuz HURR HURR NAZIS GET KILLED AND OMG THE ARK AND LULZ INDIANA JONES.
he lives in america again. During the time of Brazil he was in england, but that was around the time of monty python still.Am I the only one that doesnt like the Wizard of Oz at all?

gilliam's american-born, although i think he's a nationalized brit, now. i dunno.
Brazil: 9.5 :bowyet you hate his other writing/directing work in python :(
Only negative is that it's not the kind of movie I can sit down and watch again and again. I've seen it about 4 times but I haven't watched it in months.
