Seriously. Opa Ages have the worst kind of fanboyism I have ever seen in my life. Every topic is a console/format wars with insults and trolls thrown at each other constantly. Makes GAF and NGG look like a mature gamingboard.

Well, it's only a matter of time before the rest tumble.  On the bright side for cheapo bastards like me, the coming blowout sales will be spectacular.  I'm still going to buy certain titles like Casablanca and Adventures of Robin Hood on HD DVD, as they sold terribly for Warner, and I doubt they're in any hurry to reissue those on Blu Ray any time soon (my guess is 2009, when the user base might support such titles).

As I was saying over on GAF to Mifune, I wouldn't be so hasty to get rid of HD DVDs if I were someone thinking about selling them off.  Some of them could be worth quite a bit in a year to collectors, like some laserdiscs were.  And HD DVD players are still going to be manufactured and purchased at least through the end of 2008.  My advice is to hang on to your HD DVDs and see what happens.  Sure, some are going to be worthless, but I'd be willing to bet some are going to shake out at $50 to $75 (or more) on the collector market.  Hell, even the doomed D-VHS format from a few years ago has some titles going for $150 to collectors.  Point is, collectors are crazy, and you should wait to see if you can take advantage of that.

this news doesn't actually get me MORE MOVIES until paramount and universal cave, so yeah, in the interrim i'm enjoying the xbot downspin. e.g. benjamin birdie and his "RAGING TIDE OF CONSUMER APATHY" to hd movies. what an amusingly desperate metaphor. he likes xbox so much that he obviously -- OBVIOUSLY -- doesn't want hd movies to take off. that's dedication.

HD DVD group are probably talking with Universal/Paramount/Dreamworks now

i don't mind either group to win, am just hoping MS will give support to Blu Ray with their HDI program if Blu wins (which is more likely now), Java is shite and it ain't suited to HD

and maybe, just maybe one day Blu would be Region Free like HD DVD.

...when BD/HDDVD combo players are out there now for -less- than a PS3.

i don't think that's the case -- the lg combo player is still $800, and the samsung will be in that same range. anyway, standalone bd players are the more relevant comparison...ps3 is no longer the cheapest, but its 1.1 profile and further upgradability still make it the best choice. it seems pretty clear to me that bd will be big, but i don't know if it'll happen fast enough to turn ps3 around.

Are you sure? I'm sure it would be fun, meeting up with various PS3 users on EB and GAF, setting up the seating arrangment, dimming the lights before the interview starts. I can't wait!

Well yeah, it would be fun to meet a Wollan or Kittonwy in the wild, no doubt. But I'm sure I'd grow tired of it quickly.

I'm just joking by the way :lol

Theres interesting social aspects that Home will bring forth when it comes to connecting gamers but I dont' think I'll personally be messing around with it.

I'm already juggling like 8 different remotes in my media room.  One more to the mix doesn't bother me too much.  They all go in the same basket.

One of these days I'd like to buy one of those LCD remotes that controls everything but, well, I've got other stuff around the house that needs attention first.

I like the PS3 remote.  You don't even have to aim it at the PS3 for it to work, and it's laid out pretty well.  You can get it for less than $20 if you dig around.

Okay, but I just want one remote for everything. Besides, my mom gets confused easily and will use the wrong remote, and call me to ask what's wrong. I show her the right remote, and I mock her with Homer's "Oooh, they have the internet on computers now!" line. I want to avoid that.

No doubt Benjamin is one of the XDF's finest troops, but what he's saying is not far from true in this case. The general consumer does not give a shit about HD right now. They all want to go there, to be up with the Joneses, but it's simply out of their reach for the time being.

i don't really agree. ce companies and studios both need bd revenue, so they'll be pushing it hard. and its benefits are easily demonstrable -- just play a movie on a big flat panel in a store. xbots love anecdotal stories about people who buy hdtvs and then watch crappy sd signals on them -- and i can tell stories like that too -- but if people can be sold on hdtvs and hd cable and hd satellite, there's no reason they can't be sold on bd. and i don't know about japan or europe, but hdtv prices in the us have dropped unbelievably fast. it'll be a slow burn, as dvd was, but bd is going to happen.

i think the one big risk was an indefinitely protracted format war, but that's just been averted.

probably my fault, but when i see gafers championing dvd or digital distribution for one obvious reason, i start seeing red a bit. it's one thing to wish failure on ENEMY CONSOLES, but to wish failure on a movie format because of its association with an ENEMY CONSOLE is a new level of twattery

standard definition is the great satan, and super low bitrate hd movies with cutting-edge stereo sound aren't much better. i embrace my hd-dvd brethren. i spurn xbots who -- like microsoft -- are mainly involved in this thing to muddy the waters

Digital distribution will be pretty cool once everyone's cable connection supports the crazy bandwidth required (2-5 years from now).  There's a lot of stuff I'd like to watch when I'm in the mood, but don't wish to own, and don't want to wait the couple of days it takes netflix to get it to me.  I will always prefer owning the movies I love in a physical format, like distant and I were talking about, but I think the movement is already in place to get everyone used to the idea of downloading movies on demand, and has been for a couple of years.  DD will not replace physical media, but I believe it will ride along neck and neck at some point in the future.

That said, more classic flix on Blu Ray, pleez.  Fuck a bunch of Van Helsing, where's my High Resolution remastered Singin' in the Rain

Unfortunately not everyone can appreciate remastered classics right when they buy their new bluray player (ie ps3). Movies that benefit the most from high def are usually recent and have high production values (costumes, sets, computer graphic crap)

I will say I was really impressed with Dracula on Bluray

Not unexpected, but it sorta sucks because I just bought an HD-DVD player.

That's okay though, my PS3 plays Blu-Rays much better than my HD-DVD player plays HD-DVDs. Evidently Dolby Digital Plus isn't backwards compatible with Dolby Digital, which fucking sucks because I can't get anything better than Pro Logic II out of my HD-DVDs. Blu-Ray wins there, that's for sure.
