I started the game tonight... here are some thoughts on it.  I'm playing on Human diff and just finished mission 4.

  • The cutscenes are amazing and very stylish.  Much better than NG2
  • The gfx are sick.  The environments look great and much better than NG2.  The textures are some of the best I've seen this gen.  Amazing textures...
  • Like I said, I'm playing on Human mode and I find the game really easy.  I'm on mission 5 and haven't even come close to dying yet or using a health item.  I would've started on Devil Hunter but the achievement for beating that doesn't unlock the one for beating Human so I started on human and then will play DH with all the abilities carried over.  This is what demi told me at least
  • The two boss battles I've experience so far were great.  They look absolutely incredible... the models are insane.  That damn toad looked adorable :lol  Great textures on that toad
  • Glorious 60 fps, butter smooth, no drops so far
  • The combat is pretty basic right now.  I know it supposedly gets much better when you unlock more abilities but as of right now, it's not even in Ninja Gaiden 2's league.  NG2's combat is much more deep, satisfying and responsive.
  • Mission 4 was awful except for that toad (:lol).  There was barely any combat in it and the whole gyro thing was straight up distinguished mentally-challenged.
  • I don't understand the story much... I read some of the descriptions of the characters and stuff in the library.  That's helped a little bit, but I'm sure playing the previous 3 games would've made it less confusing.
  • Why does the price of the red and blue abilities go up after you buy something? I'm broke as fuck
  • What are some good ones to buy?  I like how you can cancel them and redistribute as you wish
  • I like Nero more than Dante.  Obviously, I just mean from the few cutscenes I've seen so far...haven't played as Dante.  Nero's arm is too powerful, tho.  You can just keep spamming it and kill most enemies, at least on Human.
  • Overall, I like it but I wish there was more combat and less running around doing stupid shit.

* Abilities go up in price because they do - shrug - you'll buy majority of them by the end of your Devil Hunter run

* Get TRIGGER HEART (when available) and AIR HIKE, MAX-ACT, then upgrade SNATCH, CHARGE SHOT, and just various sword moves

* You can spam the Buster but if you're going for S ranks, that wont cut it, you have to mix it up

* There will be more enemies as you go up the difficulties, and different enemy placements, and how much damage they can take

* You don't really need to play the other games to understand the story, but there are basically nods to the previous games

Cool
One thing I don't like is the responsiveness of the sword.  It takes too long to attack.  Compare it to NG2 and how quickly the sword (or any weap) slashes and the super fast combos you can do.  Hell, even the big ass scythe in NG2 is faster than the sword in DMC4.  I will have to get used to this but I wish it was faster.  The enemy AI is really bad, too.

Sword is plenty faced when you have it revved. Learn the IR and experience bliss. Human mode and Devil Hunter suck but if you're achievement whoring you need to run through both for achievements. And the game picks up on SoS mode somewhat. If you like combat, you'll love the bloody palace.

I'm up to like mission 14 now.  Dante's combat is more fun and his sword is faster, so that's good.  I still think there's too much running around from point A to point B.  The game should have a lot more combat.  None of this backtracking, running around and weak platforming.

The best things about the game are the cut scenes and gfx, imo.  The cut scenes are shameless... they're really great and stylish.  The gfx are fucking sick.  The textures are unreal.  The environments look fantastic.  So much polish and stuff.

The gameplay, though, is seriously lacking.  Maybe I would've enjoyed this game more if I played it first then NG2 after.  The combat is nowhere near as deep, responsive and satisfying.  Not even in the same league.  That doesn't make DMC4 a bad game... like I said, the cut scenes, gfx, and overall presentation are fantastic and make it worth a playthrough.  I'm not sure I'll play it again, though.

Btw, what's with the achievements?  I haven't gotten a single one yet :lol

You haven't been comboing those statues? I remember that you get an achievement for getting an S rank, SS rank, and SSS rank. I also remember getting an achievement for beating a mission with an overall S rank. That's really easy to do on Human mode.

as an NG fan it pains me to say this, but the combat in DMC4 is much deeper (when you have everything and all powered up.) but its not as responsive or satisfying.

I actually thought it was more responsive due to being able to break out of attack frames.  :-\
