i like gta -- its earnest attempts at mission design make it the least objectionable sandbox game by far. i don't know if i $60 like it. but i'm sure i'll play gta4 at some point

This is exactly why I got tired of Crackdown. Fun for like 6 hours and then there's absolutely no structure.

Do WHAT exactly? Shoot things? Jump?

It's fun until you exhaust all the structure. Then it's up to you to "make" your own fun, which I've never personally thought was good gameplay design.

I could play Animal Crossing if I wanted that.

Yes, I played the main story stuff entirely in coop and had a great time. But then I just...ran out of things to do. I'm not the type that was ever amused by "how long can we juggle this car in the air" or that sort of stuff. There are some neat ideas they put in there-- climbing the agency tower was sweet. But the game desperately needed a "drop down" button for it to be a really fun platformer for me.

I prefer tight, linear design in almost every case. Look what happened with Assassin's Creed. Though, granted, there's much less to do in that game than there is in Crackdown. But I found the kinetics in AC inherently enjoyable.

Yeah, I was unclear there. I'm not praising it. I'm more pointing to it as an example of a game that really needed tight, linear design.

For the record, I don't think it's an abortion, but it would have been if the free running wasn't so great.

ACs linearity doesnt make it a better game. Its popularity is pretty much thanks to its convoluted Kojimaesque story.

Crackdowns true sandbox nature is the very reason why it works so well. Its even better when you factor the fantastic DLC

I don't think you're understanding me. Like at all.

I'm saying it's not linear (because it isn't) and seriously could have used some tightly designed set pieces the player experiences in a linear fashion instead of the random garbage they throw at you.

I don't want to make my own fun.

Reboot the gangs and kill them at higher difficulty while maxing your guy. Go after stunt rings. Rooftop and street races are both pretty fun, and more are added with DLC.

I guess some fun is lost if you don't care about achievements. I sorta care and a bunch were fun to go after. I'll probably pick the game up again in 6 months, sweep all the bosses again and have a maxed duder.

SA had a feature where you if you failed a long mission you had the option to go back to the very end of it. IV has brought the feature back.

So it looks like there aren't any checkpoints in missions, once again... seriously now, R*... what's the deal? The missions in these games just keep getting longer, and it's so frustrating to have to do a few easy and boring parts just to try your hand at the final and really difficult part, a problem I had with SA and it's extra long missions. Looks like R* still doesn't want to fix the problems that make the GTA series so shitty.
