I love how vague the mission goals are.

Example:

You are given the line of "Eliminate the blackmailers."

The scene:

You are chasing after then in high speed (only on the straight-aways, lord help you if you try turning while going fast).

Your thought? Try to shoot them down, using the convoluted control scheme. Nothing seems to be working. It's bulletproof, maybe? You don't give up though, and proceed with your relentless assault. Cars all around you are flipping out, the AI is purposely turning in front of you. You're getting frustrated. But still, you keep going, unloading clip after clip. What's going on? You can't be that bad?

Suddenly, you fail. Your car has flipped over because you knicked a corner and spun out of control. You are frustrated. You want to break something.

You go online and look up tips... and you find out, you aren't MEANT to shoot them in pursuit, but rather simply chase them until you wind up at a certain spot, where the blackmailers will casually climb out, where you can hop out as well and cap them, ending the mission.

The question:

Why were you given a vague and blatant wild goose chase of a goal?

The driving IS shit.  Doesn't mean I can't like other parts of the game.  I'm actually loving the game.  But the driving is fucking terrible

For those saying its unplayable though, why force yourself through the game? It makes no sense to me. It's one thing to say its terrible, its another to say you can't even play it, but keep playing it.

I've gotten used to the driving for the most part. First off, I changed the control scheme to classic as soon as I started the game. The handbrake is useless to me, except for doing 180 turns, so the classic scheme fits good for me since acceleration and brake are right next to each other. Second, you have to slow down to go faster. Doing one of those races with Brucie makes it easier to see, if you follow the cars in front of you how they take the turns, you can burn them up.

I'm not going to say its the easiest drive scheme in the world, but its a lot more realistic than the older GTA's where you go 90 and could take out light poles like tree twigs. Hey, isn't this the realistic GTA everyone has been clamoring for? Be careful what you wish for.

I will say it is easy and is fine once you get used to it.  I spent an hour just driving around in Roman's shitty car and figuring out how to work it, now all cars are a piece of cake.  I need to do the same with motorcycles though.

People in this thread are just happy agreeing with each other that it's crap, so don't waste your time.

Quote
Why were you given a vague and blatant wild goose chase of a goal?

good question and I agree it's shitty when they don't specify whether you should chase or kill guys.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who failed the motorcycle mission several times before realizing you're not supposed to kill the guy while he's on the bike.

I've noticed that "chase" missions give the other guy a good head start and make it nearly impossible to catch up, while "kill" missions tone down the other guy's driving speed/skills.

pretty much all of the chases in this game are so planned it's ridiculous.

the enemy can drive perfectly with 3 obviously flat tires.  there's a shitton of semis and stuff when you're chasing them and they always pull up to some area and try to jump out and run.  meh

The enemies also have razor sharp perfect car turning, even at high speeds - that is what I want, but I am not given.

Franz Kafka can not see this because he is too busy "getting used" to it. Or maybe he needs to just take the wool off.

Yyyup. Some missions are fun but every third mission is like this. Big WTF

It's a sandbox, why can't I solve a mission my own way?

one glitch worked in my favor

i was trying to gun down a guy while driving and the spotty targeting caused me to pop a cop instead, so here comes a flock of fuzz, but they ended up killing my target for me instead of focusing on me - then the mission ended/my game saved, and the cop circle instantly went away, like i'd never even shot that cop

thanks, lc pigs

Granted that I haven't played that much of the game, but it doesn't feel like much of a sandbox at this point. And blocking off parts of the city may make sense in terms of game progression, but it feels ridiculously limiting.

Man, here I was watching a cop have a shoot out with a guy...I just drove on the sidewalk and killed some innocents, so I thought I'd restore the karmic balance by taking out this one crook for the cop.  So I run over and deck the crook, save the day, and instead of rewarding me, the cop starts shooting at me instead.

Took some back alley and there was this cruiser parked back there and a cop standing up on some balcony. He was just standing there. It freaked me out and I drove away.

I get these occasional urges to buy GTAIV to see what it's like (just had one), but so far I'm holding off.  Is SR2 very far away?

This is by far the best thing Ive read from the gaming media.

It's amazing that people are already calling for his head and want him fired  :lol

Heh, articles like that are good for awaking me to the grim reality that GTAIV is still like past 3D GTAs.

Dude i know it's your opinion and all but, you just don't get it do you? by the way that try and portray yourself i guess you have never struggled with the streets and it's difficult choices. Niko is a man that's done horrible things but still is a guy with a conscious. he understands that life is a mess and you have to do what ever it takes to survive even if it's against your believe system. you on the other hand act like you're too good to play and try to understand this game. with your snobbish attitude and the way you try and sling word's that you're average mind would have to look up in a dictionary and used in a complete sentence for them to understand, but i digress. My point is your a pompous prick that probably didn't have a lot of friends in high school and got bullied by a foreigner like Niko and robbed by a gang banger named C.J. i know it's was just your opinion, and what i'm about to say is my opinion---- MarkRyan__ you're just a pompous yellow bellied Jaded bitch. remember people let's respect each others opinions  ~

Saints Row has better mission progression as well

You can also recruit random people off the street to come with you to a shootout

You can also hold items to heal you, or revive your dead recruited people (pour a 40 for your homie)

Saints Row has better item equipment selection (meaning, how you select what weapon you want to use)

I'm liking it more than the other GTA games so far, but this shit is still overrated and the controls are still ass. They made the combat a little better, but the driving controls are fucked if you're not driving one of the better cars. Graphics, city, music, and the characters so far are all good imo. It doesn't deserve any higher than an 8.

This morning I was playing on the 360 and there were a couple of clear bright sunny days so the shadow diffusion was really kicking into overdrive which was making me crazy so I said screw this I'm going out to buy the PS3 version.  So now I get back from the store with the PS3 game and I can't even make it past the section at the very beginning when you get off the boat and drive Roman home.  The game crashes everytime.  Hell, the game even caused my PS3 to crash during the freakin' install.  Fucking bullshit.

Yeah, turning off the internet connection seems to work so hooray for that.

I'm not sure if I'm all that pleased with the way this version looks either.  The shadow dithering has been toned down compared to the 360 but it's still there unfortunately and there's a noticable downgrade in resolution.  Jaggies everywhere.  I haven't noticed any real color differences between the two and the framerate seems somewhat comparable so far.

Looks like we're going to have to wait for the PC version to play the REAL GTA4.

I've done a ridiculous amount of side missions, and now I have like 4 or 5 actual missions to do opened up. I got almost every friend up to a like level where they offer different things, is there any difference if you get them up to 100% like? 70 or 80% like level or so will get them to unlock things, I don't know if 100% will unlock anything else.

BTW, word to the wise, with Bruce do NOT do the powerboat mission, unless you want to spend a ridiculous amount of time doing absolutely nothing. I flipped the fucking boat over TWICE on another boat and some poles in the water (the popup when out on the boat is ridiculous), and spend like 15 minutes  wasted doing that shit. Overall between doing races over and passing a couple races (also, do not start a race in a motorcycle), and getting Brucie's like level up after fucking up those boat missions, it probably took a good hour or more. Roided out mother fucker. It wasn't even worth it either.

Do you get anything from finishing Brucies races? I can never find a decent car to do them with.
