Quote
- Opening act is the best part
- Not a game for MGS outsiders
- two cut-scenes near the 90 minute mark
- The Beauty and the Beast Unit are in the shadow of the MGS3 Cobra Unit.
- Camera flow effortless between 1st and 3rd person view
- Control system has "at last" the ideal balance of intuitvness and range.
- Game can be played for months rather than days.
- MGS4 is not the game it could of been, nor the game it should have been if you believed the early trailers (??)
- But is very faithful to its fans and delivers without equal in so many ways.

TWO NINTEY MINUTE CUT SCENES!?!? :zzz

:lol @ Iron Man & Haze

I really don't care because i know what to expect from Mgs4, and for me it's a default 10.

That said, it doesn't surprise me the least to see a publication like EDGE score MGS4 like this. They say MGs4 has two cut scenes that near the 90 minute mark. Since EDGE is here to review games, i don't see how watching movies is supposed to be a good use of the medium.

I honestly thought it would geta 9, it got the same glowing previews and features GTA did.

In the time of those two 90 minute cut scenes you could finish Lost Winds

Two of them?

Seriously, does it give you a warning? I mean that's something you've gotta plan your playing time around.

I just can't believe people are looking forward to watching 90 minute cut scenes in any game, let alone a fucking MGS one.  Jesus Christ, just how stupid do you have to be to enjoy MGS's storyline?  It's embarrassingly dumb.  But I guess if you're too busy beating off to anime in your parent's basement all day long you probably wouldn't notice.

The Cobra Unit wasn't THAT awesome.  Besides The End and The Boss, I found all of the others' situations and battles very tacky.

I can't believe that there are two (!) cutscenes that are close to 90 minutes. That's nowhere near the length of scenes in previous games even. wouldn't be surprised if that's not entirely accurate

I can't believe it either. Even two cutscenes of 45 minutes each seems ridiculous. Seriously, you 'suck' as a game story teller if you need that much continuous non-interactivity to tell your story.

I think the reactions to the 8 reviews solidify the transition of Sfags to Nfags. They are now truly and completely the blubbery man children of the gaming world, hopelessly devoted and rabidly defensive against any perceived slight.

The nfags, on the other hand, now have excellent hand eye coordination and will soon have flat stomachs and tight asses.

This is a new world.

Flaghsip title of a PLAYSTATION Franchise (MGS4) once again falls on it face when facing flagship title of XBOX Franchise (Halo 3).

The Edge Halo 3 review might be the single most pathetic review I've read. Finally playing Halo 3 for myself, the first thing that came to mind was that review, and wondering what in the hell game Edge played.

I just can't believe people are looking forward to watching 90 minute cut scenes in any game, let alone a fucking MGS one.  Jesus Christ, just how stupid do you have to be to enjoy MGS's storyline?  It's embarrassingly dumb.

Well, I agree with you, but people seem to enjoy that story. It's convoluted and it's got a bunch of wacky characters, so yeah, people will like it. At least with MGS I know that the ridiculous story will be placed front and center, which is better than sequels where the developer for one reason or the other has decided that the shitty and stolen story of its game is worth a place in the spotlight.

Even if you enjoy the story, this isn't Advent Children. There are better ways to present the story than a continuous lengthy cutscene.

5 minutes, ok. 45+? Huh?

Oh, I agree. I've always viewed Kojima's convoluted and drawn out approach as little more than a substitute for real story telling skills. But that doesn't mean that people, MGS fans, won't like it.

True. I must say however, that as a MGS fan i am happy that the game is what it is. Call it guilty pleasure or whatever, but when i hear stuff like that i feel like MGS4 was done specifically for me, for the MGS fans like me.

That's not saying that i wish all games to be like this, because i don't. However i don't want games to be the opposite, like Bourne Conspiracy that basically strips away the story and gives you a shooting gallery, thats not fun either.

But the difference between me, and the morons that are attacking Edge and Eurogamer etc, is that i understand  the bad things MGs brings with it, and how it's far from a perfect game.

When i look at the 8, i just want to read the review and see what Edge thought about it. But those faggoty ass morons that only care about the score, are worthless pieces of shit, that are only worried about how high it ranks against exclusives in the other consoles.

Fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellows.

Out of at this point morbid curiosity, do you know what they had to say about Haze? Mostly wondering because Edge offered a slight glimmer of hope some month before the game was actually released, so I'm curious to hear what they think went wrong.

The first time I ever rolled my eyes at a videogame was when I heard the "can love bloom on a battlefield" speech from MGS1.  I can't believe that there is an entire cult that eats up that tripe.

People Gamers are accustomed to swallowing stupid shit. I think COD4 is the only "serious" game in recent years that hasn't made me roll my eyes from all the cheese. What's worse than the banal and silly is when the incredibly lame is presented as something very epic, and very serious.

Are we absolutely POSITIVE that there are 90-minute cutscenes? Because that sounds utterly insane. Are you sure they're not just 20 minutes but they FEEL like an hour and a half?

Comparatively, one of the Xenosagas had a 45-minute cutscene and everyone was like "NOOOOOO WAYYYYYYYYY", that was great

See, that's the thing. I'm a huge fan of MGS, but not because of the story, it's the characters. The characters had so much charisma to them, even the ones that died in the same cutscene you met them have alot of flesh to them that never bores. I think as time has gone on, Kojima and his team have forgotten that's what made MGS1 so great. Every time you killed a boss, it felt like something huge because every boss had this huge backstory, so it was almost as you killed a person with a past and future, and it weighed heavy on the player (the first time at least) and that's what I'm people enjoy, but just lump that feeling in with "story" when it's the characters and writing that shine so brightly.

MGS2 had quite a bit of character exposition, but it just wasn't the same as MGS1's concise and easier briefings on characters. Also, the characters weren't nearly as likable.

It's like the movie The Princess Bride. The story is absolute shit, but the characters turn it into an infinitely watchable little fantasy story. It's the same reason people are able to return to MGS1 over and over again. TTS failed in carrying the magic of the first through the remake process because they drastically changed the characters, especially Snake, who went from weathered Plisskin badass to Super Hero Missile Dodging Douchface, add homo.

That's my two cents.

EDGE lost its credibility after giving Halo 3 a 10. I'm still in awe.

An 8 is still a great score though. I don't know why someone should meltdown over it.

I think all great games should have extensive cutscenes. Imagine how much better the Williams Pinball Collection would have been if, after you activate multi-ball, you got a 45-minute CG sequence of Pin-bot contemplating what it truly means to be human

I'm totally with you on this, I think 8 is a very good score, especially from Edge. However, it's a typical irrational kneejerk fanboy reaction. Remember the stupid uproar over the 8.9 that Gamespot gave Twilight Princess?

I like Edge but I don't always agree with them. They gave Halo 3 a 10 so they're obviously not always right.

There's no right or wrong when you are reviewing games, at least when you attribute good scores to good games. How good of a score it is however, will be different for many people.

I can see how Halo 3 is a 10. I think it's a great game, i really liked it, but to me it wasn't a 10, taking into account my level of enjoyment with that game. MGS4 will probably be a 10 for me, like previous MGSs, but that doesn't fucking mean that my "10", based on my level of enjoyment, is any less wrong than EDGE 8.

It's as simple as that. We like to throw shit out there, but we aren't anymore right than those who review the games. I don't like Super Mario Galaxy, i think it's boring. But i'm not gonna say that Edge is wrong for giving it a 10, etc etc

People that feel affected by Halo 3 getting a 10 or MGs4 getting an 8, seriously need to change their life, it's all downhill from that point on people.

It was the Gamecube version that got an 8.9.

EDGE lost its credibility after giving Halo 3 a 10. I'm still in awe.

An 8 is still a great score though. I don't know why someone should meltdown over it.
How can 8 be a good score when they lost their credibility?

It was in general. No matter who reviews it, an 8 is still a good score. IMO

ynos yrros is such a terrible poster.

I'm anticipating MGS, but whatever. I'll judge it when I play it. I don't MGS will ever have a cast as awesome as MGS1's.

Agreed. The stories are pretty lol, in a comic book super hero sorta way. But the characters...I love the characters.

90 minute cut-scenes? Even MGS3's cut-scenes were ridiculously long and lame. This shit should give plenty of unintentional laughs. :rofl

People love animes like Naruto, Bleach, etc etc etc

MGS is very much at an "Anime" level of quality. I don't understand what's so bad about the whole thing. Sure it's not at the same quality as many movies, but why compare it to movies when it looks much more like anime?!
