Got my PS3 MGS4 pack yesterday night, yeah I waited on line... there weren't too many people there, only 3 other people were picking up the console/game combo. One dude had a Ryo Hazuki shirt on, another guy had a Fox Hound tattoo... I also saw a lot of people with Metallica and Slayer shirts, what's with videogame nerds and 80's metal? I asked some of the other people what games I should get with my PS3 and they were all like "all the other games suck" 

So yeah, now I'm at work and it's pissing me off b/c I wanna be home so bad and playing... this day is gonna go by SOOOO SLOOOOOW!!!

he was talking about how all ps3 games have uncompressed audio and texture so he always gets multiplatform releases.  so then i told him that most don't and most actually perform worse than their 360 counterparts and I brought up the fact that GTA 4 had a lower resolution than its 360 counterpart.  He said "Yeah, but the PS3 renders the resolutions natively.  Everyone knows that's better"  omfg :'(  I did discover that hardcore Sony fans seem to be faux gangster distinguished mentally-challenged fellows.  Awesome.

Nice review. Sad to hear about the MGs2 situation, where the tanker part was the best part in the whole game, and the farther you go the less you play and the more you watch.

It was weird, a lot of the people waiting outside were actually big SEGA fans (ironic considering what MGS2 did to the Dreamcast), and they were only interested in MGS4 and not in any other PS3 game. No real gangsta looking people there, nor was it high school emo kids like if it was a Nintendo launch, just old fashioned video game geeks. I was in good company.

First ten minutes definitely lacked a good bit of gameplay. Did Snake simply crawl under a truck and a cut-scene was activated? That was like five seconds of gameplay. Anyways, the section where Snake was heading North whilst evading the Metal Gears was pretty neat. I just can't stand these torturous cut-scenes anymore.

Raiden is so fuck awesome. The first cutscene he appears in so well done, and the fighting is so incredible to watch.

The production values in this game are out of this world.

Can we equip the mask early on, and keep it on during cut scenes? Have you tried it? (The ninja mask)

And can we equip a young Snake mask or do we have to look at Grandpa all the time?

Yes, you can equip a young Snake mask (you need to do so in Act 3). There is even a Young Snake one with a bandana.

The act install videos change every time.  I started two games and the first had a gameshow clip which was hilarious and the second had a Praying Mantis commercial.  The second time I started it was a documentary on different octopus species

anyways, yeah, the immersion in the battlefield in this game is incredible.  seriously.  Best atmosphere of any stealth game ever.  It beats assassin's creed because I don't hear the same stupid lines over and over.  but who knows, maybe i'll start noticing the repeats at some point.  

also again, GODDAMN at the character models.  they look great.

this is also one of the first stealth games where I don't want to run and gun.  I actually wait patiently for the evasion deal to go down

The drebin store/customization is incredible.  Also, I spend a shitload of time in each section helping out the militia.  these set pieces are amazing.

I haven't really noticed any glaring bad textures but I haven't been looking for it either. Also, the game uses a good subtle DoF effect. Unless your in First Person view, the texture don't really bother me.

Definitely. I met Drebin for the first time and I love the character models so far. The wind blowing at Snakes and Otacons clothing at the beginning caught my eye too. So much little detail.

Go ahead and page Aunt Jemima for all I fucking care.  You can throw out as many "look at the temporal AA!" "1024x768" and "shitty textures and framerate" comments as you want, this game looks fucking amazing and the attention to detail goes above and beyond the other "best looking console games" of this gen.  Better than the tacky-as-hell UE3 trash pieces that are usually hailed as technical marvels.
 
I'm well aware of the flaws, but when something floors me with presentation, animation, details, style, art direction, and other things that aren't dictated purely by hardware, I tend to forget about them.

LMAO... except he's got a point. I can fairly easily tear apart any game released on consoles this generation. I understand MGS4 is not the perfect package, but I can certainly also see how someone could argue that it is, in fact, the best looking game of the generation. In spite of its flaws. It pretty obviously has a very strong sense of direction, the craftsmanship is clearly at the top of the heap, making for a pretty striking whole. And considering that few games really ever excel in more than one or two areas, I'm not seeing the LMAO worthiness of his statement. Hell, even the dull info screens are better than anything designed by any other developer, and the industrial design kicks all sorts of ass.

Now, for laughs, what would you consider the best looking game of this generation? Let's tear some shit apart, eh?

COD4, with its low-res everything, including bug nasty fucking weapon textures and some of the shittiest looking vegetation this side of Delta Force? You're out of your bloody mind. Or blind, one of the two. Gears is an exercise in blurry paint-on-detail and should have been dropped from the "graphics" discussion some time ago. Of course, if you really like monsters and blood, it's one hot looking game.

And since when in the hell does the popular term "graphics" not include artistic direction and value? What's next to go, craftsmanship? But then again, with this criteria, one could even argue that Rare games aren't vomit on a broad stick.
