I have troubles playing MGS1 and 2 anymore because of the lack of CQC. It is a pretty polarizing game mechanic but ah well. People have been bitching about it since 3 and then it was reliant on pressure sensitive buttons for the actions. SOoooooooooooo many slit throats. :hyper

Yes, it clearly is making you pissed.

Aside from the aiming, I don't see what's so different from MGS3.

Another thing that I'm starting to struggle with- can't sidle basically anything? Seems like a cliff or wall has to be about knee height for Snake to be able to vault it. Am I just hitting the wrong buttons? Or is it because he's old?

It's context based. If you can vault it, it will let you know, you don't have to do any guess work.

Well, aside from the fact that the shooting, now works like GRAw, which means it has fixed the shooting of previous games, now you don't have to play twister with your gamepad to shoot an enemy....

...You can now crouch walk...

Seriously, what isn't different from MGs3? It plays completely different. The camera, the shooting, the crouch, the camo that doesn't make you browse through menus in order to work....

What more do you want? jesus christ.

Okay this game was good.

How good?

So good I'm willing to overlook the ending to fucking MGS2.

That good!

Good, because Kojima seems to have overlooked the ending to MGS2 as well.

Some of the shit that happens at the end of Act 3....oh my.  I don't care one bit about what goes on in MGS land but I'll be damned if this game doesn't have some of the most amazing videogame cinemas that I've ever seen, or at least as far as graphics are concerned.  I wish the gameplay sections were that nice to look at. :/  It's like the anti-Assassin's Creed.  AC had incredible in-game graphics but their cinemas were dogshit, while MGS4 has some of the most balls out amazing looking cinemas ever but the actual game graphics are just kind of meh.

I'm about 4.5 hours into MGS1. Gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised. The controls are clunky and the graphics are atrocious, but I'm really digging the story and gameplay. Its been a nice break from all the current-gen 360 games I've been playing for 2+ years.

Not sure if I'm ready to change my opinion on the series (played through most of MGS2 on Xbox - hated it with a passion). However, I can see myself leaning in that direction.

I doubt they cost 30 million, get real.

The ads are actually pretty funny, very surreal. Some of the CG is pretty nice too.

early impressions on the graphics:

- sweet models, especially otacon.
- the transition between realtime cutscenes and gameplay is stunning.
- octacamo is beautiful.
- only drawback so far are the weak textures, fuzzy shadows and the bloomy skies.

can't comment on the gameplay yet.

and oh, otacon voice is so far the best and i always imagined the colonel as a black man, seeing him all old and white with the same voice is umm...not good lol.

Guh? He's been clearly an old white man in Metal Gear 2, MGS1, Ghost Babel, MGS2, Twin Snakes, and Portable Ops (okay, he's a young white dude in that one).

How the fuck did you accidentally misinterpret his race?  :lol

I'm still very much enjoying the game, but I agree that he just went a bit too far with Act 3.  Act 1 and 2 were filled with excellent gameplay sequences (especially Act 2).  Those areas truly offered some of the best stealth action gameplay I've ever experienced.  While still very different, I was reminded of Deus Ex or Thief in that the levels were still linear, but open ended enough that it actually feels as if you can do things very differently each time (I know it's quite possible after watching a friend tackle those same segments).

Act 3 wasn't necessarily bad at all, but the cutscene to gameplay ratio just went out the window.  If they want to throw around such lengthy scenes, it should be reserved for the ending segments of the game.  The scenes were fun to watch, but they really needed some trimming.  I hate to say this, but one missed opportunity for gameplay occured near the end of Act 3 following a boss fight.  You enter a place in a cutscene with the intention of making your way to another point and they simply filled that in with a cinematic when they should have allowed you to move through the area yourself.

In a way, it reminds me of what happened with Crysis once you reached the alien structure.  The focus of the game completely shifted at that point and everything you did during the first half of the game is basically dropped in favor of a more cinematic experience.

act 1 is done.

some negative xfaggy impressions:

what's up with the loading between zones? isn't 8min of installing and 3 minute between each act enough?

and the weak textures really hurt the nice looking cutscenes, and about the gameplay, tbh at the end i just rushed through to see more of the story, not good at stealth and i really wanna see more lol.

btw, the palm trees near the end were pretty impressive.

edit: is this the first game with realtime cutscenes to gameplay transition? i am impressed, more impressive than the fmv to gameplay in lost odyssey due to no loading.

act 1 is done.

some negative xfaggy impressions:

what's up with the loading between zones? isn't 8min of installing and 3 minute between each act enough? This is one of the biggest problems with the game, the loading between areas allows for cheap evades.

and the weak textures really hurt the nice looking cutscenes, and about the gameplay, tbh at the end i just rushed through to see more of the story, not good at stealth and i really wanna see more lol. Weak textures? I think that MGS4 in gameplay doesn't have exactly godly graphics, and isn't showing us anything we haven't seen before, but during cut scenes i think the graphics are amazing, i don't notice the weak textures at all.

btw, the palm trees near the end were pretty impressive.

edit: is this the first game with realtime cutscenes to gameplay transition? i am impressed, more impressive than the fmv to gameplay in lost odyssey due to no loading. I don't think so, i believe it has been done before, i just can't pinpoint the game. Assassins Creed did it i believe?

I had a bigger issue with the actual "gameplay" in Act 3 than I did with the ammount and length of the cutscenes.  The first section in the streets following the resistance member was freakin' awful.  I wouldn't have minded a little of that but it went entirely too long.  Way too boring and completely out of place.  But I agree with you about the end of the Act.  As awesome as that bike scene was, it doesn't exactly make up for the fact that you're just mearly a spectator to a 30+ minute cinema on the river.  They should've handed off control at some point and let us play some of that....any of it.  Hell, I would've given Meryl CPR just to be able to do something.

Thank God someone agrees about the Act 3 opening.  In fact, I got there Friday night and I picked it up Saturday morning after thinking "Goddamn, Act 2 was so fucking awesome" and following that resistance asshole was so fucking boring that I didn't even work to get past it all weekend.  I failed a few times because he's a fucking pansy that gets scared when I help him and runs away and I end up losing him and I hate looking for him.  I'll push through tonight, but fuck, that's a terrible sequence.  My first "are you fucking kidding me?" of the game.  And I was looking at fucking footstep shapes in Act 2 for fucks sake!

I lost the first guy almost right off the bat 'cause I scared him by getting rid of the first PMC and then spent the next 30 minutes looking in vain for another resistance member to tail.  Just terrible game design.

Try to finish it though.  There's a really fucking amazing chase scene that'll have you lifting your jaw off the floor when you're done.

Yeah, I wasn't too fond of the gameplay at the start of Act 3 either.  I think the last portion was probably the best as it actually had some challenge.  The whole idea needed work.  I aprpeciated the atmosphere, but it just went on too long.

After the bike scene and before the river scene, you cut through the sewers in order to reach the river.  They should have allowed you to play that part out.  It would have provided a nice break between the chase and the final cutscene on the river.  Maybe have guards patrolling the sewers while you have to help Big Mama along (not hold her hand like MGS3, but perhaps call to her when it's safe or something?).  I dunno, I think they could have done something cool with a segment like that.  Also, during the boss fight of Act 3, I noticed that all of those flying machines used a bright light which could cast proper shadows.  Every light source was casting a shadow.  I would like to see that effect used more often.  They already have completely dynamic shadows across the game, so why not take advantage of it in a dynamic fashion more often?  Perhaps the suggested sewer segment could have been somewhat dark with PMCs patrolling with flashlights?  Would have enjoyed it.

Just beat Act 3, hopefully will finish the game next weekend. I wasn't too nuts about the gameplay in act 3, the machine gun took too long to reload during the bike chase, and your aiming reticule moves a bit too slow, so that section was annoying, as was the overly-long stalking of the resistance member portion at the beginning. Still, the game is firing on all fronts and I'm really liking how they're tying all the games together with the story. Graphics look gorgeous, too, apart from a few weak textures.

Yeah. The opening of Act 3 is really boring. I mean the concept itself is fine, but you are following this dude in empty streets, and the things he does, the amount of times he gets caught, etc, it's just lame as shit. I wish they had done something a bit more exciting, populate the streets, and make it a Jason Bourne type of Cat and Mouse.

Only cool thing about that was when i noticed the recon balls, they form this person shape, and if you keep your eyes open, you will notice it following you in the streets. At first i was like "wtf was that", then later i understood, that was funny.

finally got to play a bit this weekend.  i don't mind the story too much, i'm all about the cheese.  graphics are pretty nice and i'm actually liking the gameplay more so than the previous iterations of the game due to the amount of customization.   i find the gun customization to be pretty useless and the whole credit system is pretty lame imo.  i guess it adds to replay value but i can't see myself playing this more than once.

so far so good, and i'm almost done with act 1.

I beat the game yesterday. The ending felt WAY too long but it was sweet nonetheless. Also, omfg at some of the weapons you get near endgame. You gun nuts will be swooning.

I'm playing through it again. Trying to do super low alert run for some secret stuff.

This game was very enjoyable to play, its too bad about the later acts kind of being more about running and gunning instead of stealth.

Without a shadow of a doubt, I would agree. The game has tons of problems, but the visual end of things isn't one of them. I think its almost as impressive for its time as MGS2 was for its time, which is saying a lot.

I think its the best looking game this gen so far.

During cut scenes yes. During gameplay, it's not impressive at all.

I think the later parts of the game are extremely impressive in both cut scene and gameplay. I'm not a fan of the look if the middle eastern levels, though. The cutscene where Snake and the MK upload the worm into GW is jaw dropping gorgeous.

Yeah, it still is.

I don't think it is. The blizzard scene in Act 4 is only impressive because you can hardly see shit. In act 3 the city looks plain and boring.

There's a walkway before the microwaves that looks gud, but really. I was never, never impressed by the gameplay graphics aside from the blizzard, never mind that Act 1 and Act 2 look no better than the stuff i saw in COD4.

I'd say that this is the best looking game of the generation so far. Sure it just looks alright during actual gameplay but holy mother of god does it look insane during the cutscenes and some of the major set piece action sequences.  Unbelievably impressive stuff to the point where I'm not really sure if the 360 could ever match it.  It's the first PS3 game where I can actually see this supposed extra horsepower we've been reading about for the past several years.

I know I was bitching about how ugly MGS4 was before it came out but I gotta admit I was wrong.  In my defense though, those screenshots they released weren't all that hot. :p

Yeah. There were times that made me double check, i really don't think the 360 can pull these cut scenes. We will see what Gears of War 2 does though.

Basically all the epilogue sequences were terrible.

Then he shows up, and i was like "Fuck you. What's this shit?" And then he dies, that way? Seriously?

Snake should have blown his brains out, now that would've been an awesome ending. But have Otacon nearby, to be there at his end.

Also, for being the villain of the game, I felt that Revolver Ocelot was really underused.  He really only has a small handful of lines.  He was the best character in the series.

He really was kind of a background villain in MGS4.

I was mostly pissed about the voice though, i was expecting to hear liquid, and i kept expecting it, i wanted to hear his "BROTHAA", but it never happened.

And then that whole shit about him not being liquid afterall...

what the fuck. Now that's some bullshit.

Bringing Big Boss back to life also kinda totally ruins a lot of the story in MGS1 and MGS2.

Oh, what's that Snake? The entire plotline of MGS1 revolves around the conflict between you and Liquid about how you killed Big Boss and whether or not to accept his legacy? WELL GUESS WHAT LOL HE'S NOT REALLY DEAD
[close]

One of the coolest scenes in MGS1, now ruined by Kojima's incessant need to retcon and please fans:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Liquid: So the Snake's finally come out of his hole?  Are you ready now... my brother?

Snake: Why are you calling me brother? Who the hell are you!?

Liquid: I'm you! I'm your shadow!

Snake: What!?

Liquid: Ask the father that you killed! I'll send you to hell to meet him!!
[close]

Now you can't play that scene again without mentally noting that that's totally incorrect now.

Isn't that still correct from Liquid's POV? I'm assuming Foxhound was being used unwittingly.

Yup. One of the first things that came to mind was that. Snake killed his ass before. Wtf

That's why the

But then he shows up all healthy and shit. *shakes head* Kojima really dropped the ball on that one.
