agreed.

the thing about the X series (the early ones at least) is that you can play it exactly like the old games, you can beat it without sub tanks, upgrades or whatever.

Wasn't Mega Man and Bass a port of some game that didn't come out in the US, with a different name or something?

X games weren't complicated, at least X1 to 5.

they are easier and better in about everything.

They are more complicated in the ways that Himuro is talking about.  I didn't say they were too complicated, but that they were more complicated.

Unfortunately this is down to individual preference which is entirely subjective and cannot be factually proven to be right or wrong in this case.  Himuro is basically saying the only reason someone could hold a preference for the classic series is if they are addled with nostalgia, and his basis for that is that the later series offer more complicated maneuvers.

It irritates me when people poo-poo other people's preferences based on an arbitrary metric, I dunno.

Sounds like exactly what Crushed said about Zelda, just swap maneuvers for environments.

I thought the argument was funny :lol

Judging from the rotating platforms and the amount of sprites in that last screen, they definitely aren't working within the NES' limits.

yeah

i guess my whole problem here is 8 bit

:piss 8 bit :piss2

gameboy is a good 8 bit system though

There are few NES games I still like. I can't even get into Super Mario Bros. 3 any more because I find the levels far too short.

I didn't really care much to play the original MM games, but I know for sure I VASTLY prefer the controls of the X series. The originals feel way too clunky and stiff for me.

Definitely.

The difficulty level was great as well.  Not too easy like most MM games.

Rockman and Forte >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mega Man 9

I'm calling it now.

That game was awesome and difficult on the SNES.  I didn't get to play the GBA port or the WonderSwan sequel.  Lots of platforming, lots of challenge, lots of awesome.  Going back to 8 bit isn't the smartest idea.  Its fanbase will be limited to nostalgic nerds who buy T-Shirts with NES controllers on it and the undersexed, such as Crushed.

I'm going to say this right now.

I never really "got" classic 8 bit MM. I think this is mostly because I heard how MM2 was the best Mega Man ever and I got Anniversary Collection, tried it out, found it flawed up the ass and never really gave other MM's a fair chance. I love X and Zero, but I could never get into MM because of that bitterness of being let down from MM2.

So I popped in Anniversary Collection today and played some MM5.

I've played every game on the compilation to some degree but not in much depth.

I've never really gotten far due to my bitterness about 1. Mega Man 2, 2. the fact the games aren't fast like X and Z. X and Z were my first Mega Man's so it was kinda hard to go from them to classic MM.

But I tried giving it a fair chance tonight and I love MM5.

Gravity Man's stage is funner than anything than the trial and error bullshit stages in MM2.

I find the game far easier than any MMX or Z (except maybe MMX3) so far though.

I gave MM1-3 another shot and I still really really don't care for them at all. I don't like the interface at all (especially MM3 because I can only call on Rush if go through start). On top of this, MM4 has charge shot AND the slide.

But I play MM4-8 and I think they're fun as fuck.

The level designs are far tighter and less trial and error and they're just fun. I don't find MM1-3 fun at ALL.

But one complaint still remains constant. I fucking hate how these games handles respawning enemies.

The only thing I care about MM2 is the music.

Wait, so you were bashing the 8bit games without having actually played any of them besides 2 before?

Ah well, Megaman games are the kind that slowly evolve, yet still play extremely well even many years later.  If they can capture the magic of an oldskool MM game, I'll be all over this.

Classic Controller's D-pad destroys every other D-pad this generation.

Whatever, then skip Mega Man 9 and play whatever.  I'd rather have this than the pastel fucking nightmare of MM8.
What's so great about this, though?  Would MM9 with glorious high-def gfx with the same exact gameplay be worse?  I understand the nostalgia factor but I would've much preferred an HD remake / sequel with the same gameplay.  Look at Bionic Commando: Rearmed, for example.

http://www.indiegames.com/blog/2008/06/remake_game_pick_rockman_7fc_m.html#more

Here's a way to see if you would enjoy MM7 as much as an 8bit game.

In the end, it's going to be all about gameplay, they can't rely on fancy graphics or shit like many games can now.  Oldskool Megaman games played so well, and if this game plays as well as those, then it's a hell of a lot better than a mediocre but fancy looking game like some of the newer Megaman games.

Gameplay over graphics!

i know the level is easy with upgrades - that's the point.  i'll play it, thinking "THIS time i'm gonna kick this level's ass," but i end up getting destroyed over and over.  then i blast the fuck out of everything with the powered-up suit and i'm like "HOW DO YOU LIKE IT NOW?"  even though i know that i'm weak.

and rain, i like using the upgrades the first time though, but playing through without them is much more challenging and rewarding.
