Trigun's biggest problem is that it is horribly inconsistent. One minute it's great, the next it's so juvenile I have to turn it off.

It suffers from a split-personality, like a number of anime, except to a very extreme case. Kind of feels like two different shows with the same characters spliced together. I really enjoyed it despite that, but I can see how it might turn some people off to it. Most of the second half, and a number of the episodes from the first half, are great though.

Trigun anime sucked

adjusted

Yeah I've heard the manga is so much better. Trigun is one of the most overhyped animes I've ever had the "pleasure" to watch.

Are the main characters not as vapid as they are in the anime? The only characters I like in the anime are Wolfwood, Knives, and...that's it.

The linebacker chick the worst character still?

Vash still has that "no desire to kill, kind to everyone" attitude but he doesn't seem nowhere as whiny compared to his anime counterpart IMO.

Legato has more story and actually does something, knives gets a lot more action.

More detail about Vash/Knives race

Linebacker chick still doesn't do much.

wolfwood is the same for the most part (with Chapel being much different from the anime adaptation)

he still kicks the bucket though :(

The first episode of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 was boring, the entire thing was OMG FAMILY DRAMA. Summary: Pre-teen girl hates her life because her mom works late, buys rectangular cakes instead of round ones, gets into passive-aggressive fights with their father, and forces her to take her baby brother downtown to the robot festival during summer vacation. Presumably this is so we'll all learn a valuable lesson about not knowing what you've got 'till it's gone, but whatever, BORING; let's just get to the earthquaking, which did hit in the last 30 seconds of the episode. I still have hopes for this series.

But regardless though, I've got Needless for my Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Action/WTF fix and Kanamemo for my moe fix. I'm all set for this season.

:lol Well, for what it's worth, you can have my impressions. I'm no great judge of anime, I just know what I like.

Visually, Bakemonogatari reminds me of a lot of Shaft's other series (Paniponi Dash, Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, Hidamari Sketch, etc.), in that it has a lot of the familiar visual quirks. A lot quick cuts, text on the screen, characters talking side by side on the upper half of the screen, if you've seen a few of those shows, you probably know what I'm talking about. It probably looks the most like ef, which I really liked the look of.

As for the show itself, for the first 10 minutes, it was like BLAH BLAH BLAH PANTY SHOT TALK TALK TALK and I was like

 :-\

but then out of nowhere this chick staples his mouth and I was like

:lol

The second half of the episode was pretty funny. I could see myself watching this show. It's sort of like the dark humor of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei with a dash of When They Cry thrown in, maybe.

Needless is good? I'll check it out Joe.

Finishing up Michiko to Hatchin, rewatching Samurai Champloo.

I don't like Sayanara Zetsubuo or whatever. I can see the appeal but the overuse of visual puns and gags isn't my thing. I'm more of a Cromartie High/Guu/FMP: Fumoffu guy when it comes to comedy animes.

Planetes is good, but overrated. Zeta Gundam is good but it takes forever for the plot to move forward. The last 10 or so episodes are great but I wouldn't want to watch it again. Cromartie is the best out that list.

Agreed. Also, the story just isn't that interesting until around ep 30. Especially compared to say, 0079 or Turn A, or even 00 s1. They're going around doing random ops sometimes, and it's just so hard to care; psycho gundam assault and camille's situation with his parents aside.

But by the end, you're in love with the characters and the ending made a really big impact on me.

I just highly disagree with anyone calling Zeta anywhere close to the best Gundam tv series.

Hell, I don't even like Char's Counterattack. Shit story. Hate what they did with Char, the best character in the series. The stupid little kids ruin the story. The only good thing about it is the animation and mechs.

CCA is awesome.  Mech fights so good that it negates whatever problems you had with the story.  Probably my favorite Gundam movie for the mostly mindless combat and mech designs.  Sazabi :drool  Nu Gundam :rock

Most probably wouldn't agree with how I feel about Gundam.  Gundam 0080 is my favorite Gundam series by-far, and I didn't think 08th MS Team was as great as others.

And planetes is awesome and totally not overrated because I rarely see it rated period.  The only time the series got a bit lame was when they tried to go dark and depressing later on, bu it was still great.  If they did an FMA2 like series that covered the manga story instead, that would be even better.  The manga is a lot more lighthearted than the anime was, and many events are different; specifically, the manga continues a bit after the anime finished.  I guess the enjoyment of the series would change if you weren't big into space stuff.  The series is fairly realistic compared to most anime dealing with space.

I love the serious parts of Planates. I highly dislike the silly parts because they feel so thrown in. I liked the episodes that actually had to deal with living in outer space, or how the writers think space life will be in 100 years. Like the moon girl who's tall as hell. Or stupid lead female going outside

It's more that the serious parts were thrown in.  Like I mentioned before, the manga is a lot more silly and consistent than the anime.  One example is
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the entire Hakim is ended early.  Tanabe kisses Hachi, then Hakim pretty much stands there and is like "I'm done with this terrorits shit"

A lot like the FMA, actually, they tried to make the anime version a lot more serious than the manga and that's why it may seem disjointed.  I'm not a fan of when they keep it disjointed and would rather it be one, the other or a good medium between.  Planetes struck the medium for most of the series, imo, until later in the series.

Gundam 0080 is one of my favorites. 0079 and 08th MS and Turn A are the kings though.

I don't like mindless Gundam. I'm all about the story.

I don't mind it, and that's why CCA is the best for mindless enjoyment.  Though it isn't devoid of story like 00 s2 or SEED is.

and yeah, Turn A is definitely the best non-UC Gundam series.
