I said it over there I'll say it over here.

democrats seek to win by inspriing and bringing people together. Seeking the better part of people.
Republicans seek to win by mocking and dividing people. Seeking the worse part of people.

Tonight was a penultimate example.

i don't think penultimate means what you think it means

sd, you're not allowed to mock groups as being shallow in their politics until you either

1) take some responsibility for your racism

or

2) show a glimmer of frontal lobe activity

How about both?

1) Its true. I'm a racist. To the core. Been a member of the Forsyth County KKK since I was two. My dad was Grand Wizrd for a period of time back in the 90s. My brother is now head of the Cross Burning committee. My wife helps knit confederate flag throws. Good times.

2) Respectfully, I believe everyone here completely missed it. Y'all have just seen the future of the Republican Party. She fucking nailed it.

It was important for the REPs to bring to light the lack of experience of Obama - PARTICULARLY because of how the DEMs (and the entire MSM) portrayed her lack of experience. Do y'all seriously think Obama's experience in any way compares to her's? If so, please please try to articulate it with any semblence of substance. His voting record is "present" and his "change driven" legislation leadership doesn't exit. The comment about his two memoirs with no actual bills or laws was utterly damning.

Palin made an incredible appeal to middle America. She did it with her small town commentary, about Obama saying one thing to Scranton and another to San Francisco. She did it by speaking to her husband's union membership and her motherhood. Seriously, if not Sarah Palin, who exactly could have achieved this for the REPs at this point?

Let's understand, they were floundering. They had no brand (deservedly). Somehow, with the selection of Palin, McCain has completely turned this election around.

Frankly, y'all couldn't be more wrong in your assessment.

Obama may still win. Hell, I have $200 on it with my cross burning brother. But, this was...transformative.

I am in love.

Delegates said they were enthralled by Ms. Palin. "I think she’s great; she’s giving it back to the Democrats for all the sorry things they’ve said about her and about America," said Anita Bargas, a delegate from Angleton, Tex. "She’s a conservative, and she has a great sense of humor."

Like 80% of what they say is TRUE! God damn you fucking dumbass republicans embracing corruption and terror and rich people. Jesus fucking christ.

Sorry, sd.  Ridicule is only effective when directed towards the ridiculous.  You forfeit this rhetorical ploy when you made the comments about Vick and Ryan.

"But I was drunk!  That doesn't reflect who I am!"  No go, kid.  I'm not claiming in vino veritas here, but I'm not handing out mulligans for intoxication either.  Mel Gibson didn't get a pass because he was soused and neither do you.

All you had to do was own your actions and I would have let you off the hook.  "That was an awful thing to say and I'm sorry and I don't think of myself as a racist but I need to do better."  Something like that and I'd drop it.

Instead you just winked at the audience, assured yourself that you are pure of heart and assumed that nobody should be allowed to bring up what you said against you.  Which is an unbelievably blithe expectation of privilege, especially from someone who did so much hand-wringing about a black "racialist" church.

Not only did you tell yourself you were in the clear but you get righteously indignant when someone says otherwise.  How dare they draw conclusions from your actions rather than your self-assessment?  Please.

I could have taken a much softer, conciliatory approach and was encouraged to do so.  But you decided to revert to smug mockery and a sense of thoroughly undeserved superiority so I figure why waste time.

For the second part of your post I think you've just confused an erection with an epiphany.  Don't worry; we all had those irrationally strong crushes back in middle school.  You'll make it out okay.

I bought an Obama tshirt from MoveOn today. I dunno if I can even wear it at work, but after Palin's speech I was powerless to resist. Most of my tshirts come from webcomics anyway and Palin's speech was certainly both comedic and on the web.

There's a difference between raising funds for primaries and for the general but now that Obama's the official nominee everything goes to the general.  That should mean they can spend it any time from now until election day.

Consider diverting some of those moneys to someone in a contested Congressional race like Jeff Merkley in Oregon.  I don't want to sound cocky about Obama winning but a lot of these guys need it more than he does and it would suck if he won but his entire agenda got filibustered to death.

Yeah I split tonight's rage donation between Obama and Kay Hagan. Chuck Schumer clearly has a hardon for a Dascle-sized scalp here in NC, but she needs more ground support, so I put my name in the pot for "call indecisive voters and read the script/walk around the neighboorhood" duties to help out.

It's clear that the GOP are going to try to run a base campaign, but I can't for the life of me think how they win that way in 2008. They are obviously pretty desparate, so it might be the case where they very well just not know how to try anything else.

Also, I really don't see them getting much of a convention bounce out of this. Between the truncated convention and drowned-out message (Palin's problems will continue to dominate the news tomorrow, specifically her bridge to nowhere stuff), and the fact that in large part GOP voters had already aligned very strongly with McCain, it's looking like 1-2% bounce territory. Obama made up his ground with a large set of undecided Democrats and independents, and this convention isn't going to win over any independents if it goes the rate it is going now.

They're going to try to frame Obama as a radical activist and member of the angry left, bet on it.

I just don't see how they can really cross over that message to independents and undecided voters. The obvious parry to that kind of approach is to aggressive ju-jitsu their word play/dog whistling (an email from Plouffe already has all the right pivots and wordsmithing) in ways everyone can understand.

This time around, the GOP needs those independent voters and undecideds to win.

A Great Speech, For Both Bases
St. Paul delegates are giddy with Sarah Palin’s speech. The mood is buoyant, enlivened, energized. It’s a party. There are revelers. The faces shine with joy and pleasure at a convention finally fully underway. Their VP nominee did it – she hit it out of the park. There is joy in Mudville, here on the ground.

And it worked wonders – for the Dems.

In the past several hours, Dems I’ve spoken with and who’ve flooded my inbox are energized. A woman friend and Democrat who had not worked for Obama’s campaign: “I am volunteering tomorrow.” An Obama organizer who was operating on fumes five months ago: “They are not getting away with this. 10 hours of call time tomorrow.” A shorter read of the mood: “Let’s get it on.”

The mockery went too far. They played the “Obama doesn’t love America, just himself” card, over and over and over. For people already inclined to believe that (i.e., the hardcore Republican base), the speech was a smashing success. Maybe they will work a little harder, volunteer a few more hours, dig a little deeper into their pockets. But so will partisan Dems, who are far more plugged into watching the election coverage.

So my reaction: St. Paul loved this speech… and so did Chicago. Palin swung for the fences, mocking the very notion of community organizing. So did Giuliani. This was the day after “Service” was the theme, and Republicans fell all over themselves praising their party’s commitment to give back to the community. Jarring.

Fire up both bases equally, it’s not even close. Obama wins going away. In 2008, there are so many more Democrats, numerically.

So, everyone on both partisan sides has reason to celebrate tonight. Republicans can celebrate a true champion in the VP role. Dems can celebrate because the numbers don’t lie, and no energy occurs in a vacuum. Republicans can’t tie this year.

edit: and apparently her speech was written before she was even picked as VP and had to be edited to be less masculine

Palin: Iraq war 'a task that is from God'

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."

In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it "God's will."

...

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."

...

"God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

What saddens me is that there are people in this country who actually are energized by that speech.  That had to be one of the most disconnected, incoherent, non interersting speeches ever given by a vp or presidential pic from either party in history.  I absolutely love how people are calling her the future of the party.......that is what must feel like to take your first gulp of water while drowning.

Yeah, last night I was in utter disbelief.  I bought an Obama shirt and water bottle and will be donating money to him and another Dem running for Congress.  Admittedly, I don't follow Congress (especially outside of Michigan or the largest states) very much.  Any suggestions?  I don't want to toss money to a shit Dem but I would like to give support to a candidate who could help Obama's cause or get in the way of McCain's should he win.

This RNC is inspiring me in a way much different than last week's amazing DNC.

http://www.actblue.com/page/redtoblue2008

Those are Dem candidates in red districts that have been selected by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as targets for pick ups this November.  They need the cash.  Click on somebody to learn about 'em and contribute to your favorite- they're all over the country so you can find someone close to you.  I like Darcy Burner in Washington, myself.  She's very progressive and her house burned down earlier this year, so she needs the help in her campaign.

If you want to contribute to a Senatorial candidate, I would recommend Jeff Merkley in OR, Kay Hagan in NC or Al Franken in MN.  All are currently in tight races and need the cash.  Check out http://www.dscc.org/races for more info.

Federwang, as a Jew I thought you would be more concerned with her sitting in her church pew TWO WEEKS AGO as the leader of Jews for Jesus said that terrorist attacks against Jews in Israel was a result of their not believing in Christ.

Eh, I'm like, barely Jewish.  That shit doesn't really register with me.

And I don't care what religion people subscribe to.  The words didn't come out of her mouth.  HERE THEY CAME OUT OF HER MOUF.

Palin is a technican, Obama's an engineer. At the end of the day when it comes to broad horizons, 5 year plans, big projects you place your trust in the engineer. Technicans, yes they might have common sense and the people's touch but they lack the theoretical background and deep understanding of issues- that analytical edge.

Bush was a governor of Texas for six years it still didn't make the country (or the world) any better off.

Well fine.  But do America a favor and pass that on to your Jewish relatives.

I would hope that more of my relatives are deeply concerned by the fact that Palin believes that military engagements and oil pipelines are dictated by God rather than whatever minister (are Jews for Jesus rabbis or ministers or what?) that's not really associated to her said about Israel.

So, remember that touching moment in Mayor McMooseburger's speech last night when she said that special needs children and their parents would have an advocate in Washington in her when she was elected?  Well, apparently it turns out (per Soledad O'brien on CNN this morning) that as Governor of Alaska, Palin cut the programs for those families by 62%.

But really, she feels your pain guys.  She'll totally ADVOCATE for you.

Obama is running against McCain, and I fucking KNOW Biden > Palin. Fucking republicans and their bullshit. Why would I want to vote for someone so clearly corrupt? Just cause the republicans avoid the arguments by screaming over everyone with MAVRICK REFORMER doesnt change her crap.

BUT BUT BUT SIAMESEDREAMER FELL IN LOVE LAST NIGHT!

NEVERMIND THE FACT THAT SHE CREATED OVER $3,000 IN DEBT PER CITIZEN DURING HER TENURE AS MAYOR!

DON'T MENTION THAT SHE WAS FOR THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE BEFORE SHE WAS AGAINST IT, AND EVEN AFTER BEING AGAINST IT STILL TOOK THAT FEDERAL EARMARK CHECK AND DEPOSITED IT EVEN THOUGH THEY DIDN'T BUILD THE BRIDGE!

PAY NO MIND TO HER STUPID, POLITICALLY MOTIVATED FIRINGS AND ATTEMPTED FIRINGS OF THOSE WHO WOULDN'T FALL IN LINE WITH HER AS MAYOR AND GOVERNOR!  BECAUSE WE CERTAINLY HAVEN'T LEARNED ANYTHING ABOUT THAT SORT OF LESSON IN THE PAST 8 YEARS!

SHE SPOKE WELL AND RILED UP THE BASE!  COME ON!

Okay.

His voting record is "present"

While in the Illinois State Senate, Barack Obama cast 129 "present" votes out of approximately 4,000 total votes. That's 3.2%.

and his "change driven" legislation leadership doesn't exit. The comment about his two memoirs with no actual bills or laws was utterly damning.

One thing Gov. Palin can hang her hat on as an accomplishment:  her hometown of Wasilla is the Meth Capital of Alaska!  Yay!  Number one, baby!

Quote
The calls about meth to children's services in Wasilla accounts for as many as 40 percent of the agency's total monthly child protection calls.

Family values!
