I would just like an anchorman or anchorwoman that challenged talking heads on these ludicrous points or when they don't answer the question. For BOTH sides!
That would be nice, wouldn't it? In general, a TV news industry dedicated to informing people would be pretty sweet. Why it won't happen:
1) They're terrified of seeming partisan, so there's a lot of pressure to challenge each side by the same amount. Which gives politicians an incentive to be dishonest, because they'll either skate on it, or your more honest opponent will get challenged on his claims as much as you, and give the impression that you're equally forthcoming.
2) News anchors and even reporters aren't terribly well-versed on the nuts and bolts of the issues which become the subject of political arguments, so there are a lot of topics where they aren't well-equipped to step in and spot BS. That's because...
3) Cable news is geared towards the medium. They want conflict, visuals, and noise. That's why there's such a huge focus on the story-of-the-day, and why that story always seems to involve one person saying something mean about another. Think of the political media like the sports media where PTI, Around The Horn, First and Ten, and Rome is Burning rehash the exact same story about TO's latest quote for hours on end.
