The GOP won't be splitting into two parties.  Instead, we'll see a comical fight between the Neocon leftovers and the Religious Right.  Both think it is their time to step up and take over the party and that will secure a 2012 Obama victory.

Also, the last time a Presidential candidate tried to win with racism:

1964 - Barry Goldwater - 52 Electoral Votes
1968 - George Wallace - 46 Electoral Votes

Considering how things were in the 60s compared to today, if McCain were to allow the campaign to move to near racism, he'd probably get a McGovern or a Mondale turnout.  Which is why he is trying to stop the racist right from overrunning his campaign.

Which is why I expect him to drop the terrorist-racist angle soon.  He knows he lost and will probably focus more on not getting absolutely railroaded on the 4th.  He knows that the attacks are giving Obama greater leads and that his main support now can't even conceal their racism anymore.  That is not a winning formula or even a barely losing formula.

1972 was more of the anti-hippie vote.  1988 was more of making fun of Dukakis's soft yet robotic persona.

72 featured a lot of racial fear mongering, most evident in the southern races. And with 88 the Willie Horton ad and other insinuations on Dukakis' crime record were more blatant than McCain's hardest attacks.

John Lewis weighs in

Quote
"What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history," Lewis said in a statement issued today.  "Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse."
Quote
"George Wallace never threw a bomb," Lewis noted.  "He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama."

Republican talking head on MSNBC says that when Palin said "Obama sees America differently from the rest of us" in the context of his relationship with Bill Ayers, what she was really talking about was his tax plan.

I'd watch more cable news if I wasn't sure someone was going to insult my intelligence within a minute of tuning in.

That's an ideology so ingrained that no facts or logic could persuade over wise. I have no idea what's going to happen if Obama wins the presidency but it might not be pretty in some places. Racism will never disappear from society, especially one like the United States, but we've come a long way. There are people from my grandparent's generation and from this woman's generation who will never let go of their own racial prejudices.

My grandma (on my dad's side) washed laundry outside a laundry mat because the owners didn't want her working inside; she's got horrible arthritis in her hands today due to that. I don't think she's racist but she definitely houses some prejudices that would seem disturbing to the average person today. The fact that she's lived long enough to come this close to seeing a black man elected president is amazing to me; words can't describe it. Even if Obama loses he's come so far that it's definitely a huge accomplishment.

I would just like an anchorman or anchorwoman that challenged talking heads on these ludicrous points or when they don't answer the question.  For BOTH sides!

That would be nice, wouldn't it?  In general, a TV news industry dedicated to informing people would be pretty sweet.  Why it won't happen:

1) They're terrified of seeming partisan, so there's a lot of pressure to challenge each side by the same amount.  Which gives politicians an incentive to be dishonest, because they'll either skate on it, or your more honest opponent will get challenged on his claims as much as you, and give the impression that you're equally forthcoming.

2) News anchors and even reporters aren't terribly well-versed on the nuts and bolts of the issues which become the subject of political arguments, so there are a lot of topics where they aren't well-equipped to step in and spot BS.  That's because...

3) Cable news is geared towards the medium.  They want conflict, visuals, and noise.  That's why there's such a huge focus on the story-of-the-day, and why that story always seems to involve one person saying something mean about another.  Think of the political media like the sports media where PTI, Around The Horn, First and Ten, and Rome is Burning rehash the exact same story about TO's latest quote for hours on end.

At some point, though, these candidates are going to make it impossible to remain objective. I mean, how much complete garbage can you cover before you feel obligated to report on its stink? Similarly to how I believe that respect should be something constantly earned as opposed to an unquestionable birthright, I believe that the tone of the reporting should dynamically change depending on whether the campaign policy and commentary is respectful or insulting to other candidates as well as to the intellect of media and the people.

That's part of what happened this campaign.  McCain's camp was shoveling so much obvious BS that it became hard to ignore.

Plus they kept it up (especially the Bridge to Nowhere lie) after they had been repeatedly called out on it.  Nothing gets the media's ire up like being ignored.  You can lie all you want, as long as you back off the lie when they run a fact check item on it, and you won't get a reputation as a liar.  If you repeat it, then you're dismissing their role and that's when they bite back.

I do think the media should strive for objectivity.  But "objectivity" to me means verifiable facts and actual expert analysis, rather than saying "well, both sides have a point" every time.  It shouldn't be that hard.

I guess that's what I'm looking for, objective journalism but based on the facts of the matter. There's absolutely nothing objective about pretending that the two are on equal footing right now. I'd by no means argue that Obama is at all flawless, but one of the candidates is running a dirtier, more desperate, less substantial and honestly more hostile campaign than the other. I guess that fear of perceived bias is really strong enough to steamroll fairness and reason.

Sarah Palin is introduced at a Flyers game in Philadelphia, a very Democratic city with famously hostile sports crowds.

Maybe, in their blithe ignorance of the local culture, they expected her to be welcomed as a liberator, not an occupier asshole.

Hunter S. Thompson hit this nail on the head years and years ago, in one of the last good pieces he ever wrote- his eulogy for Nixon.

Quote
Some people will say that words like scum and rotten are wrong for Objective Journalism -- which is true, but they miss the point. It was the built-in blind spots of the Objective rules and dogma that allowed Nixon to slither into the White House in the first place. He looked so good on paper that you could almost vote for him sight unseen. He seemed so all-American, so much like Horatio Alger, that he was able to slip through the cracks of Objective Journalism. You had to get Subjective to see Nixon clearly, and the shock of recognition was often painful.

This was the essence of the thing that got me hit with the ban-hammer at gaf.  I find life too short to go around pretending that someone isn't a massive, disgusting waste of flesh and air and I'll say it when I feel like it.  The Amirox Fairness Doctrine in poli-gaf was anathema to actual honest discussion.  If someone is being stupid or dishonest you should have the right to insult them.

I de-adminned myself in large part because I wanted to reserve the right to flame people and couldn't very well ban anyone, even for obvious offenses, without being a giant hypocrite.  I figured I'd have enough forum capital built up to be exempted myself, which seems true so far.  I mean, look at my posts in the Ask a Conservative thread.

But back on topic!

A piece comparing the McCain campaign to the last days of the Dole campaign.  Hostile crowds jeering the media, campaign staff willing to tell ridiculous lies, etc.

I am not immune to bans unfortunately.  I'm sitting down on a three month ban, which frankly is too long for me to give a fuck about GAF anymore.

Oh and I agree with the complaints about the objective media stance.  I think a lot of it though has more to do with not pissing off advertisers or audiences, which will drive down the placement ad prices, creating a financial loss for the company.

It's not like he's actually a liberal or anything.  Like a ton of posters at GAF, he's with it enough to realize that Bush sucks, doesn't really hate gay people, and got swept up in the Obama love.

Remember when the Iraq war started?  There were a ton of hawkish posters on that iteration of GAF (gamesquad.net?) and the war thread was mostly a lot of "OMG look at this awesome hi-tech weaponry on CNN!"

My favorite quote of his in particular was that he had visited DC and toured the Capitol and he was "now more excited about politics than ever."  There's a funny/sad/scary level of dedication to the campaign with very little thought towards the real world consequences happening there.
