pretty good movie. i'm not sure if i'm the only one but i got the feeling the movie implied:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
that the brother and sister were having a relationship. there's a part where you see some of his footage of her and it has a very creepy tone to it and there's one clip of him in her room and she freaks out when she looks at him and tells him to leave.

maybe it's just me.

The Skin I Live In: Oddly, I called it about 1/3 into the movie, but still enjoyed the whole thing. I'd heard this called a horror movie, but it was not horror as horrific. Great movie.

lulz

I haven't seen the original since I was like 7 but I don't remember caring about that one either.  I honestly can't imagine it's worse than the remake though.  I don't know if I've ever watched something so bland that tried so hard.

so Len Wiseman creates and launches the Underworld franchise, which isn't exactly quality but is still somehow successful enough to make it to four entries.  Directs Die Hard 5 and has a sizable hit, takes all this accrued goodwill from the studio bosses he's made from his utterly mediocre but successful career and uses all that pull to make...

a 90% similar remake to a very good Schwarzenegger blockbuster.

Len Wiseman must be the most unoriginal man on earth.

oh, and in the news of non-shitty, underbudgeted Sci-Fi, Lockout is actually kinda good.  Shame it bombed so badly, Guy Pearce makes a decent action hero.  The movie is dumb as hell, but like any good B-movie, it's got a scruffy enthusiasm in spades that makes up for the rough parts.

yeah, Lockout is fun.  Reminded me of old action movies.  Supposedly there's an unrated version and what I watched is the edited PG-13 version, which I can believe without looking it up myself.

You can tell when those scenes are coming up, more or less.  You'll definitely know when that scene you've heard about is coming up.  But the audio is just as bad, so covering your eyes might not help that much.  There's only one time in the movie (very late into it) where it's a surprise.

i guess i will go see it then. i don't actually have a problem with violent movies but if it's super graphic i sometimes get a bit woozy. the movie interests me otherwise though.

There's just the one sequence which is "squishy." The others are pretty "meh," compared to some of the scenes even in the original ALIEN.

GOON- enjoyable take on the worst part of hockey.  everyone was charismatic and fairly well written.  it's billed a comedy but it was more of a drama with comedic moments.  sean william scott and leev schreiber  particularly good.   i dunno if i'd recommend it to non-hockey fans.

Pirates! Band of Misfits - this year's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.  No joke.  Totes awesome.

The Dictator- Hilarious.  More enjoyable because we're fans of everyone involved but it wasn't that great.  Fairly funny but not nothing really special.

currently watching Virgin Witch; a horrible exploitation film from the UK in 1972.  Young girl moves to London with her best friend to become a model, instead because a sacrificial item for a coven of witches.  It's....well it's horrible but full of tits, asses, vaginas and horrible embarrassing sex.  Witchcraft seems to be a way for ugly people to fuck young women in this film moreso than any thought out actual pagan tradition.  I have an hour to go and i may turn it off.

V/H/S

3 out of the 5 short stories were good, 1 was OK, 1 was not very good.

The main arc is useless and this whole package would have benefited from just being 5 short stories with no "connection".

I enjoyed this overall. Most of the stories work and tell pretty good to decent horror tales. Would definitely recommend to horror fans.

I liked this one the most. The "haunted house" section early had a lot of atmosphere and managed to pack a lot of suspense into a very short period. I reminded me a lot of The House of the Devil and I assumed this was the Ti West joint... I was wrong. This also reminded me of Grave Encounters which is one of my favorite ghost movies of recent memory. I loved the way the house started to go crazy.

Amateur Night
This one started out a little bad. The whole dudebro beginning made me want to throw up. Luckily it gets going and gets better and better. I LOVED how they portrayed the Succubus character. She was super creepy. I favorite part was just after the dude ran out of the bathroom with the curtain rod and there's a shot of Lily with her arms wrapped around her body and she's silhouetted it's so damn good. Then at the end when she's crying and screaming because he doesnt like her, really awesome stuff.

The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger
I felt the twist was a bit forced. I liked how they implied Emily wasn't fully there mentally and was being manipulated by her "boyfriend". The two scenes where the ghosts appear were pretty well done .

Second Honeymoon
Ti West... somewhat disappointing tbh. I haven't been feeling his stuff since The House of the Devil. The Innkeepers wasn't that great and this just feel flat a bit. It's not bad but it's just not very interesting. Not enough time is given to build these characters up so we can have the big horror drop. Though when it happens here it's just a small moment and it didn't really do much for me.

Tuesday the 17th
Didn't like this one at all. The idea of the killer that can only be seen in the camera via image distortion is mildly interesting but the execution here was just not good. I didn't like any of the characters, didn't care about what was happening and felt the ending was lazy.

Ai Wei Wei: Never Sorry - Amazing documentary.  Entertaining, informative, and powerful at the same time.  Best documentary I've seen in a while.

Lake Mungo - Watched half of it tonight, kind of boring; will watch the other half tomorrow.  My main problem is that the documentary style stuff where they're interviewing everyone makes it not scary because A. Everyone is still alive at the present time when this documentary is being made years later and B.  They don't seem particularly disturbed by whatever happened years later.  The dad is always trying to hide a smile when he talks which is like wtfff.  I dunno if it's just bad acting or on purpose.  Everyone says this movie is good though, so maybe the 2nd half will redeem it.  I was watching a lot of it in a window while doing other stuff because it was so zzz.

Also rewatched Chungking Express for the dozenth time.  I always forget the first story because it's not really that good (CE is one of my favorite movies of all time); the guy's story is funny but the girl's story about the drug deal feels out of place and the action is kind of dated.  The 2nd story though about Tony Leung x Faye Wong is still SO FREAKING GOOD.  Should just cut the first story out and make it one of the best 45 min movies ever.  california dreamin~~~~~

Robocop Remake script leaked. It's a masterpiece:

http://latino-review.com/2012/08/13/robocop-transformer-fights-terrorism/

Quote
I’ll share this one detail. In the film, when Murphy is turned into Robocop 1.0, it’s described “a high-tech version of the ’80s suit.”

Then they show a focus group scene where criminals laugh at the design. “He looks like a toy from the ’80s!”

So they redesign him to look “meaner” as Robocop 2.0, who passes focus group approval.

So they not only make sure to include the original design, they also point out it’s dated and stupid. *facepalm*

Hold onto your sides for more hilarious “Robocop” details. They outsource his construction to China. #seriously

And we meet the ED-209s in the field in Iran, where they’re used to subdue suicide bombers. #ineedallthedrinksnow

Ahhh… now they just dropped Robocop 3.0 onto an Al Queda training camp to see what he does.

“He should be programmed to incapacitate in all scenarios.” “Agreed. Let’s keep him PG-13, Dr. Norton.” No. No. No. No.

By page 54, they are already onto Robocop 4.0, who looks like a “cop on steroids painted metallic blue.”

Oh, god… oh dear god… Robocop is a Transformer. He goes from “social mode” to “combat mode” and back. Full transformation.

Write it down. Page 55, the “Robocop” remake beat me. I’m done. I can’t hurt more than this.

Someone shows Pope, head of the OCP project, some mock-ups for Robocop action figures. “Are you kidding? I wouldn’t buy that for a dollar!”

Okay… the two “best” lines in the script. First up is at the unveiling ceremony for Robocop in Detroit, from a TV reporter covering it.

“I think it’s safe to say that Alex Murphy is now part man, part machine, ALL COP!” Yes, I too remember the original poster, asshat.

Second, after the traumatic first meeting with his father, Alex’s son retreats to the apartment of Lewis, Murphy’s male partner.

The scene ends with the action line “David sits, catatonic, looks at the TV — MGM REMAKE TBD.”

I’ll say this: once the script stops all the winky-winky crap and just starts telling a story, it’s not terrible. But it’s way too late.

When this thing hits theaters, people are going to call up Len Wiseman’s “Total Recall” on the phone and apologize for being so mean.

I wish they'd make Freedom Fighters re-skinned with NK troops and release it on XBLA as a movie tie-in.

I'm going through Harry Potter DVDs that I borrowed from a friend. Not the BD collection or any new DVD compilation set, but the original individual DVDs, and I am stunned. I've reached The Order of The Phoenix and so far they've all been 4:3. How can this be? I excused the first couple of movies, thinking widescreen releases have been rare in the early 2000s, but now I've reached products of 2007. Am I doing something wrong? I'm viewing them on my PS3, and I have to admit that it's been a very, very long time since I played a DVD so maybe I'm missing some conventions.

they basically tell you where the movie's concept came from. Two people smoking pot and thinking "Giant evil gods.... yeah...."

The new Ghost Rider was pretty fucking cool.
Really ? I thought it was godawful. You'd have thought that it'd be a done deal: The directors of Crank, flaming skull-headed avenger on evil do'ers, Nick Coppola, lots of money. Just bizarre that they managed to make such a boring film.

I thought Ghost Rider 2 was OK. It had enough Crank-level crazy shining through but it was obvious the movie written before the Crank team got a hold of it.

Lockout

SPACE PRISON
AWFUL CG
WISE CRACKING GUY PIERCE

all in all. pretty OK movie.

It's now probably one of my favourite concept films. Also, the money shots actually all really work too.
