Morgan Freeman double feature! Oblivion and Olympus Has Fallen
I'll start with the latter
OHF is pretty ho-hum overall. It starts surprisingly strong and evokes weird feelings of 90's actioners, specifically Die Hard 3, with the way it's shot and the framing used on scenes. When things get going it kinda droops down and becomes super super dumb. It kinda stays at that level for the remainder. I appreciated it's R rating which allowed for some unforgiving violence. Gerard Butler gives it all he can but the script is just too weak to get anything out of.
Oblivion. This movie is downright beautiful. From the design of the all the drones and future tech, the way the tetrahedral sits in the sky and is used to put a stamp on some scenes, the style of the post "apocalyptic" landscape which is weirdly sterile with spurts of landmarks here and there. I pretty much loved watching this movie because of how pretty it was.
Unfortunately the writing is a bit weak in some spots throughout. Specifically near the end with some schlocky action sequences. I also didn't understand the logic behind how Tom Cruises character was able to successfully pull off his "plan".
Weak writing notwithstanding, I rather liked the story it told. The movie reminds me of War of the Worlds in a way. You have this incredibly GIANT and EPIC foundation and the story itself deals with WORLD-SPANNING events, but you tell it in a way that feels personal. Tom Cruise is the focal point and they make it a point to make his story the focus. Everything he does is influenced by his personal motivations and you never question why he's doing something. I can say that at least for the movie, I was never confused by character motivations. As long as I have that a movie will typically work for me.
I compare Oblivion more directly to Elysium. Both are incredibly ambitious sci-fi movies with famous white male leads. Both deal with a future Earth in peril. Both have strong analogies to modern events.
Oblivion handles all his elements far better. It's not perfect and has some logic flaws due to writing issues but the sum of it's parts equaled an incredibly entertaining movie with amazing visuals.
