This makes me really happy. Next movie will also reunite the X2 writing staff and Singer for the first time since, well, X2. Firing on all cylinders.

That was great.

But man, if Fox could've stayed quiet about the title of the next one, that post credit scene would've been even better!

if Edwards is doing Star Wars (young Han Solo chronicles or something) then who's gonna direct the Godzilla sequel that was announced just three days ago?  You just know that's coming as soon as possible.

There isn't really any tentpole-film director that's a natural fit for the material, other then Del Toro, and he would make Pacific Rim 2 if he's gonna go into that genre again.  So who is going to do it?
(Brett Ratner sends complimentary brick of coke to Warner Bros.)

What if Pacific Rim 2 ... was also Godzilla 2? :ohhh

The X-Men go back in time to stop Hitler only to find out that Hitler was Obama all along.

The film culminates at the 1936 Olympics in Germany where the X-Men defeat Hitler, only to realize Jesse Owens was Obama all along. Affirmative action prevents them from arresting him before he can fraudulently win multiple awards.

Rewatched X-Men First Class with my son, who is rapidly becoming a Wolverine fanboy, though he just calls him, "Dude with the claws." I was worried I'd find something which really bothered me, but nothing did. It was great. I didn't even care about January Jones, or "Red Nightcrawler" (who the hell is that supposed to be, anyway?) and I genuinely enjoyed Magneto's transition from Xavier's bro/partner to antagonist. It was handled so much better than Anakin's transition to Darth Vader, it's not even funny -- and my son was going bananas as he realized that the guy was the Magneto from the current-timeline movies.

What a blast. Having fun raising a protogeek.

Yeah, Azazel and Mystique get it on and that makes Nightcrawler (in the comics.)

Dunno if they would have had time to by the time of DOFP though, so it's dubious that Nightcrawler in the film is their son.

Magneto didn't kill him. This is Wolverine breh. He's already confirmed for Apocalypse (which will only have the past cast.)

Although I was kind of annoyed with Mystique pretending to be Stryker and taking him. Would have been a great setup to get his Adamantium back otherwise.

Looks like Ant Man is going to suck now.

I wonder if Marvel's going to start crawling up its own ass now, with the movie continuity becoming some kind of overly precious thing.

I wish they would retcon Azzazel since that is one of the worst things Chuck Austen did. Way to take a shit on Nightcrawler. I did'nt even give Amazing a chance as it was going to continue that crap.

Anyway, I saw DOFP and it was pretty mediocre.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
As an adaptation of the story it's ok. Little dumb things like Kitty's new powers are stupid ,but they work well to explain how the star of the movies needs to be used for everything. There's really no point on nitpicking since it honestly is an ok adaptation. I mean sure there's some holes like why does Future Wolvie have metal claws? Are we not going to get a non stupid explanation as to why Xavier is alive? But whatever.

It's just the movie is really boring. Maybe it's because Jenifer Lawerence is a terrible actress and the movie unfourtantly revolves around her. Seriously, she is pretty bad. She always has the same blank expression going on and the entire movie is latched unto her un-enduring face. I was really bored by the constant talk about Raven, because she's not interesting and she's played by someone with no charisma at all. Micheal Fassbender is great and all, but he can't save the movie who's focus is on someone who is like a void of talent.

Would have liked more Quicksilver that's for sure.

I also would have liked more Future X-men. There's a serious lull of action in the movie which makes it feel slow. Having the future X-men on the offense like they are in the original comic would have been awesome. The future X-men have nothing to do except die. Having them carry out some mission like in the original would have added much needed action to the movie.

It was ok, I just felt bored by the movie. None of the X-men movie.s have honestly been good.

there's definitely some substantial audience backlash over Godzilla, which is weird to me because its an extremely well made film that is technically well above par for big huge blockbusters (no shaky-cam, great music, much better then average effects).  There isn't a single complaint that you can levy at it that doesn't apply to most other films that also get Superbowl ads, but for some reason the aggressive mediocrity of Thor 2, or the widely disliked Amazing Spider Man 2 will get a pass while the striking Godzilla is getting dumped on.

Are people really more accepting of more overstuffed films that they don't like anyway as long as they're pat and predictable, versus a blockbuster that's subverts some expectations and is differently flavored (and is still a mayhem delivery device) but is a better film overall?

That is just so strange to me.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because general audiences got too bored watching it. It's not entirely unfair, Godzilla had some parts that dragged on too long and it held back on having a really awesome fight until the end. But people just want to see something blow up every few seconds.

Yeah, ASM2 is going to be the lowest intake of the series when all is said and done.

But don't worry, there are four other Spidey films coming out in the next four years to make up for it! (ASM3, ASM4, Sinister Six, Venom spinoff.)

we'll see if this one can get actually help x-men break out in international markets.  probably not, since it's mired in continuity of films that barely registered.

How much of this is an X-Men thing and how much is an artifact of when the X-Men movies came out and a lack of Chinese distribution/data?

Despite seeing a bunch of mutants get killed, I never felt that the stakes were high or anyone was in any real danger. I suppose the cynic in me knew this was a $200 million retcon. Appreciated the attempt at a darker tone, but was completely snapped out of it and never came back with that "JFK was one of us!" line. Holy shit that was bad, my friend and I were laughing for a solid minute after that turd.

Washington D.C. scene wasn't too impressive for a climax, but at least we got a "Get out of my head Charles!" line.

I did like the scene with the Charleses, and token Asian actress was hot.

lol yeah that JFK thing. Yeah I raised an eyebrow at that. It just seems like a strange thing to hang a plot point on.

Yeah the entire climax was weak. There wasn't much excitement, just beast and wolfie half assing a fight with a boring robot. I know we got a throw away line about Banshee being dead, but Havok was still alive. What was the point of having him in one scene and not having him and a team there to fight the first gen Sentinels?

Also, quite honestly the cg in this movie was nothing great. Colossus and Sunspot looked pretty bad honestly.

Edit-Actually I forgot who was even in First Class. I guess all that's left would have been Havok and Beast

Yeah it could have been played as a joke the first time. Not the 2nd time when Mags said he was trying to save JFK because he was a mutant. He also says this to convince Charles that he isn't bad. It wasn't played as a joke there.

Yea, I'm specifically talking about the 2nd time, the argument between Charles and Erik on the plane. It was a joke alright, for all the wrong reasons. My friend and I just kept bullshitting about how Bobby Kennedy was a mutant too because he got off'd later. And then Ted's mutant power is the ability to consume vast quantities of alcohol.

I can see why it's not popular. International markets seem to like having a cool icon to showcase a movie, and like Wrath said only Wolverine really works for that for these movies.

The movie's trademark dealings with racism/homophobia/American politics also might be a turnoff. Those things just don't matter that much to people outside America.

I'm not sure that the X-Men have done particularly awful overseas.  The pre-Avengers Marvel movies did comparably, as did Batman Begins.  The later Nolan Batman movies and post-Avengers Marvel stuff are the comic book movies that have made stupid amounts of non-US money.  Seems to really help to be a sequel in an established franchise, and to have been released in the last five years.

Not that I've got any great insight on how popular these characters are overseas, but if Iron Man, Thor, and Captain American can draw huge global audiences...

The highest grossing X-Men movie in the overseas markets did about $282 million [The Wolverine, and it did considerably better than the rest of the franchise]. That's less than all 5 Spider-Man movies, the two most recent Batman movies, Man of Steel, Iron Man 2 and 3 and just barely better than Iron Man 1, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and Thor 2 and just barely better than Thor 1. The overseas markets just don't get hot for X-Men, for whatever reason.

It's not until The Dark Knight and The Avengers that comic book movies started to make vast amounts in the foreign market though.  Compare X-Men 2 and The X-Men Movie We All Agree Never Happened to contemporary movies.  They did worse than the Toby Maguire Spider-Man movies, those X-Men films made more than Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Hulk, Batman Begins, Superman Returns, and Ghostrider.

Maybe the numbers are way higher in the last few years because Thor and Captain America have particular resonance with other cultures, or maybe it's a result of a bigger global market and particularly Disney/Marvel's branding success.  I know which one sounds more plausible to me.

edit: Also the X-Men movies just didn't make as much in the US as the Batman, Spider-Man, or Iron Man movies, so.

It's worth noting that Days of Future Past is Fox's most expensive film ever aside from Avatar, and they've already greenlit the sequel (and a third Wolverine movie), so like WB and Sony they want some of the Avengers cheddar too.

If you don't like "huge" then amend it to "if Thor and Cap can jump 60-120% in a couple years and make well over $400M each for their sequels..."

I'm just saying that after browsing the year-by-year #'s, it seems to be more a case of "X-Men aren't as popular as Spider-Man anywhere" and "wow Marvel's killing it right now" and less a case of "foreigners just don't get the X-Men like they do other comic book franchises."

‘X-Men’ Rules World With Massive $261 Million Global Box-Office Opening

Quote
“X-Men: Days of Future Past” steamrolled the competition on its way to an estimated $90.7 million three-day Memorial Day weekend haul in North America, and added a huge $171 million from overseas for a whopping $261 million first weekend globally.

...

The domestic opening for “Days of Future Past” is the second-best in the 14-year-old franchise's history, behind only “X-Men: The Last Stand,” which brought in $102 million over three days on Memorial Day weekend in 2006, and $122.8 million over the four days.

...

The critics were sold (91 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences have been too, awarding it an “A” CinemaScore. Director Bryan Singer largely skipped the promotional push on the film, and concerns that his legal problems would hurt the film commercially evaporated.

...

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla” took a considerable 67 percent second-week drop from its $93 million debut last weekend, and becomes the fourth movie in a row to be No. 1 and done after a week on top, following “The Other Woman,” “Amazing Spider-Man 2” and “Neighbors.”

I enjoyed X-Men DOFP, but it fell short compared to Winter Soldier.  The Marvel-produced movies just have the formula down perfectly...and I say this as someone who's not much of a Captain America fan and is a much bigger X-Men fan.

DOFP was pretty-heavily dialogue driven and might turn some fans off with its lack of action.  I didn't mind this.  What I didn't like was how the movie's 70s setting had so few characters.  Where was everyone?  Why was it mostly-limited to Xavier, Beast, and Logan on one side and Magneto/Mystique on the other?  We get glimpses of other characters, sure, but for all the talk about mutants being such a threat and the need for sentinels, we sure don't get to see any real examples of this beyond two characters.  They have tons and tons of mutants they could have used and we only got Quicksilver in one small segment.

To me this film was pretty much just "Let's erase X-Men 3 from existence: The Movie".  It was enjoyable, but dragged on for a bit too long and just felt too 'small' in scale, despite what was going on in it.

I am looking forward to seeing what they do with Apocalypse in the next film.

I thought Winter Soldier was great but I don't get the frothing following it has. It was pretty good, but felt like any other Marvel film to me. Polished and focus tested to a T. The third act was pretty generic outside the "I'm with you til the end of the line" bit.

Yep, as someone who dosen't read much Avengers stuff and reads pretty much every X-men related comic I have to agree. I did'nt even care for the first Cap movie, but Winter Soldier was actually pretty good. Just had an actual plot with something relevant going on.

In X-men it just felt like I was watching the same olde characters talk about the same thing over and over. Again, I say it would have been far more interesting to have the future team actually go on the offensive, because honestly they and thier world are for more interesting then the 70s X-men. We hardly spend anytime with them and when they do it's just them standing around or dying. The actual original story has a great balance between the future and the "present". Yet, to me what makes the story fun is spending time with the future team and thier futile mission. With the movie I'm just bored by all the Mystique stuff and quite honestly what was the point of Magento. They really could have easily done what they needed to do with no problems if they rescued Magento. Did past Magneto just want to be included and did'nt tell Logan that he's just going to be an ass the whole time?

Honestly, Jenifer Lawrence plays a shitty Mystique. I'm not sure she's a good actress first and I guess you could reason with the fact that she's young and hasn't grown into that Mystique yet, but Mystique is kind of supposed to be a sassy bitch. Rebecca Romijn actually got that part down, then again it could be the writing. It still dosen't help that I'm just so bored every time Mystique talks.

Day of Future Past was pretty good even though wasn't the trademark Cyclops beaming the fuck out of a Sentinel.

the ending almost made me rage because they were doing the crappy wolverine and jean love story and I'm like "where's my man cyclops?!" Thankfully they rectified killing the X-men's leader off, the cunts.

The Himuro Award is a prestigious prize awarded for the biggest turnabout or flip-flop in belief or opinion for the selected time period.  Winners are selected by a secret committee from a group of nominated candidates.  In addition to being honored at the Semi-Anal Bore Achievement Awards (The "Geoduckies"), winners receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the park.

Hey fuck you too buddy. Bepbo flip flops more than me! :maf :-*

Worst part of Wolvie being in the past is you don't get old man Wolvie and the iconic shot of him getting blasted by the sentinel.

Kinberg's been flip flopping but odds are that Apocalypse isn't going to have any of the X1-3 cast.

Except, of course, Wolverine. :patel
