Watched Fast and The Furious 6, 7 & 8 over the past week.

For the record before that I had seen 1, 3 and 5.

I hated the original. Thought 3 was incredibly cheesy like an anime but better than the first. And I legit liked 5.

There isn't really a lot to say about these movies so its easy to keep it simple

#6 was okay. I didn't like it as much as 5. It's hard for me actually remember much from this one other than its the one where Michelle Rodriguez has amnesia. Set pieces are fun was the main takeaway.

#7 was a weird experience because I kept waiting for Paul Walker's death to be incorporated in the story so I think that distracted me more than it should have. Statham is fun in it as is Tony Jaa. Once again didn't like it as much as #5 but it also wasn't bad or anything.

#8 I actually quite liked. The "twist" which is was revealed in the trailer while completely predictable gave the movie a tension that was missing from the prior two installments. The whole movie feels completely ridiculous and over the top which reminded me a lot of #5. The more they double down on the stupid in these movies the more I tend to like them and this one is really stupid in a good way. Charlize Theron as a credible well acted baddie gives the movie something they generally fail at imo.

Past Life is an Israeli drama/mystery that's apparently based on true life events. As that seems to be the case, those peeps in Haifa are living lives even more melodramatic than your average Bollywood film, only not quite as much fun.

Crappy dialog, perfunctory acting, and only good enough direction can't quite damper the killer premise of 47 Meters Down, wherein Mandy Moore and some other young actress that I'm way too old to recognize spend essentially the whole dang movie underwater, dealing with decompression sickness, dwindling oxygen supplies, and of course the many killer sharks they find themselves adjacent to. Once the setup is out of the way the perspective never goes above the sea level again (nice touch, that), and the murky depths they inhabit provide no shortage of dangers and makes for a great setting for a compelling survival thriller. Its not nearly as good as it could have been, but it ain't exactly bad either.

I don't think Ridley Scott is actually a creative person, but he's got more than one stone cold classic under his belt and I always appreciate his visual sensibilities and his adult tastes. He's just tricky to nail down as an artist. A highly skilled journeyman who's really into diffused lighting? Sure, I guess. I'm just being longwinded here, but I really enjoyed Alien: Covenant, which lacks the overreaching ambition of Prometheus, but is otherwise more competent in pretty much every way. Its actually quite refreshing to see a huge budget, skillfully made, no winking and all-business horror film. Even one that gives the short shrift to almost every character that's not played by Michael Fassbender. It is very much indebted to its predecessors in the series, but it does find some nice ways to tweak the by now familiar tropes of an Alien film, and it frequently looks spectacular. Its back to basics approach yields rewards. You don't really have to re-invent the wheel every time.

I'm oddly really excited to see 47 Meters Down.  Maybe it's because I really liked that other shark movie from last summer.

This is probably too much of the movie (if you plan on seeing it), but it does a better job of promoting it than anything else I've seen.

Rewatched Hot Fuzz for the first time since it came out. Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg make an awesome team. Gonna rewatch Shaun of the Dead tonight. 👌🏻

Tetsuo: The Bullet Man

One of the most jarring movies I was ever intrigued by. It was like some schlocky cult OVA was done as a 70 minute long Sega Saturn commercial. I enjoyed it well enough, but it isn't anything I'd recommend unless you're literally down for whatever and like weird shit.

EDIT: Found out it's a part of a trilogy of weirdo japanese cyber punk horror and the very first one is supposed to be awesome. Guess I'm watching the first two.

Yeah I never was a major fan of Tsukamoto and I am not sure it aged super well but he's his own thing for sure. You can try Tokyo Fist and Bullet Ballet. Nightmare Detective was meh.

Boogie you're doing gods work there buddy.

That trailer looked like ass and I'm glad I have stayed away even with my interest in Transformers Theatrical Universe.

Redbox might be too generous for that movie.

I saw an advance screening of Valerian while I was in LA last week. I know it won't do amazing, but I hope it makes it's money back. The movie was great and everything I expected and a little more in places I didn't expect. Music is amazing if not a bit of a rehash Fifth Element vibe in some places. Story did not disappoint and that was what I was worried about most. Now I worry there isn't an audience for this movie which is a freaking shame. SAVE THIS MOVIE CHINA!

I liked The Exception, but its a bit hard to tell how seriously I should be taking it. Its a pulpy, WWII set espionage thriller. Like Paul Verhoeven's excellent film Black Book, but not as good and with less (but not absent) graphic nudity. It takes place primarily at the estate of the exiled, very-old and slightly batty Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer, thankfully) during the early days of the war while resistance shenanigans run afoot. Its a bit unfortunate then that the actual leads are the very pretty pair of Jai Courtney (his best performance yet, still not a high bar to clear, but here he's entirely adequate) and Lily James. But its all a bit overheated, a bit silly, its the kind of the film where everyone speaks perfect English but with an German accent and the the phrase 'in flagrante' is used with utter seriousness, both of which I can't help but find inherently hilarious. Its good, but by no means 'Exception'-al (I crack myself up).

I have less to say about a much better movie. It Comes at Night evokes so much tension I found myself emotionally drained by the end. Its a damn near flawless example of storytelling fundamentals and craft. The only thing about I didn't really like is how I waited until near the end of its theatrical life to go see it, I could have hectored so many more of my friends to go see it. Guess ya'all will have to do. Seriously, this movie rocks, don't sleep on it.

The Girl with All the Gifts — This film had me enrapt from start to finish. This is a sterling, fresh and fascinating take on the zombie genre. If anything, this is an altered perspective on the statement made in the novelette, I Am Legend. I was never sure which way the story would go, and in the end I was fascinated with the varied and complex emotions it instilled in me. There are a couple of odd continuity problems in the story, but nothing ruinous. The girl who played the lead is going to be huge.

Swiss Army Man — The Daniels, as they credit their shared writers/directors effort, do a passable Michel Gondry imitation, including sweded films, makeshift scenery, and the volume of fully three films' worth of twee intimacy. Along the way they leap gleefully past every limitation of good taste to indulge in fart, shit, vomit, and boner jokes, as Hank (living but emotionally dead) and Manny (dead but emotionally alive) collaborate to rescue each other from their predicament, finding the meaning of love or at least true compassion along the way. It's never clear if we're actually dealing with a man who was stranded on a deserted island, or if it's simply a figurative one. The ending is fantastic, but does nothing to clarify the so-called reality of the film's preceding scenes.

Watched Edge of Tomorrow at last and yup it's good. The finale is... meh (cgi overdrive) but certainly less offensive than most current blockbusters. Excellent pacing, good exploration of the premice, subdued but solid interactions, black humor, old school exoskeletons and a FF7 reference not being corny.

the failure is obviously because Bay went too far and crossed the one line in filmmaking you can't cross:
Quote
On September 21, 2016, shooting for a particular scene took place in Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire in England, home of World War II British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill. However, the mansion was dressed as a Nazi swastika-draped headquarters for Adolf Hitler for filming. This evoked both anger and criticism for being "symbolically disrespectful to Churchill", according to Colonel Richard Kemp, who said Churchill "will be turning in his grave,"
Quote
Churchill was buried less than a mile away, at St Martin's Church, Bladon

the only leash he really had on for District 9 would have been the budget because Peter Jackson probably ran interference as producer, after that he's been able to do what he wants and get bigger names, but at the same time be a producer

i don't know if he actually has any real clout, he flopped with Elysium so hard it basically killed him off and he's gone back to short films, ridley scott taking any chance at an alien film away from him certainly didn't help his career

i mean definitely compared to Treverrow who's getting two multi-billion dollar films that shoot themselves handed to him (THOUGH NOT BY DISNEY)

I subjectively disagree, there are too many movies I liked way more. Specifically Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The NeverEnding Story (on top of my head).
But Blue Velvet was great. Didn't get to watch it until last year though when I had Lynch marathon.

His most straightforward films are definitely The Elephant Man and The Straight Story, but both were biopics so I guess that's expected. :P

Baby Driver - Edgar Wright's rock solid take on a Tarantino genre flick. Lacks the A+ style and overall craftmanship of Tarantino since Wright while good, just isn't that level of director (yet), but more wacky and that Edgar Wright fun. Played straight, but funny stuff underneath. Feels like Wright needed to normalize as much as possible to get funding for a big budget film after the Ant-Man Fiasco, but he still was able to put his signature style and fun in.

Trailers pretty much show what you're gonna get, but it's gonna be good.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
That being said, I like how the movie ramps up and gets comic book crazy over the top in the last 20-25 mins. From the trailer and everything before that you're expecting this normal-ish heist film, and then shit goes crazy and Hamm becomes the terminator, and Spacey does machine gun downs people for love, and car battles and damn, that was fun. I think they did a good job not letting you know how crazy it'll get.

I feel like Wild at Heart is fairly straightforward. There's a Lynchiness that isn't present in something like The Straight Story though.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - this movie was pretty legit. Well-plotted, well-written. I loved Caesar, and his orangutan buddy was awesome. Franco gives a great performance.

I got about 20 minutes into Dawn, but I was getting too tired. I'll probably watch that one this weekend.

I would've liked Lynch's stuff a lot more if he didn't have a boner for Kyle Maclachlan. The guy is a charisma sink.

A more charasmatic actor or one that could portray the Everyman better, would've gone a longer way in making those projects better to me.

The Transformers series started out mediocre, at best, and has been downhill ever since, so why did you think it would be any different?

Ok, finished it. Yeah, Okja was really good. Bong Joon-Ho's best movie by far. It's ridiculous and amazing. Hilarious and humane drama. Joon-Ho does an amazing job juggling so many things tonally and still making it work. Paul Dano is so good and needs to be in the next Wes Anderson film. A+
