I heard from another thread that people were talking about Bergman?

Where's my monocle?

I refuse to talk about Bergman without my monocle  :tophat

What are your favorites?

So far I think Persona and The Virgin Spring are my top two.

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Sucked. The old Disney cartoon annihilates it. The moments that should have had emotional weight didn't, and the moments where they tried to stir your emotions fell flat. The Cheshire Cat was the best part of the whole thing, and he was terribly under-utilized. The pacing was almost as bad as X-Men 3. The plot was stupid. Many scenes ended abruptly or felt incomplete. There was no flow to the narrative.

It kind of felt like the Kingdom of Heaven theatrical cut to me. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a half hour of footage cut from the film that would have vastly improved it.

Also, it wasn't even that interesting visually. Again, the Cheshire Cat was the best part, and he wasn't in the movie enough. And I liked Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum a lot more as creepy rapists than as benevolent distinguished mentally-challenged fellows.

Guillermo Del Toro should have done this one instead.

He already made Pans Labyrinth. Why step down from that?

It's kinda sad that a cartoon from 40 years ago feels darker and edgier than a Tim Burton film.

Aside from the terrible plot, the fact that it felt so neutered was my biggest complaint. It felt like the studio tried so hard to keep it PG that they really missed out on the opportunity to do something truly interesting.

That's actually all I kept thinking while I watched it.  Especially in regards to how the soldiers moved.  Mirrormask is so fucking awesome.

Alice in Wonderland was so fucking terrible.  This is also the first 3D movie I saw that I felt was a complete waste.  Jesus, it was bad.  Maybe it's because the 3D in Avatar was so fucking awesome?  I don't know.  But it was completely unnecessary.  Added nothing of value.

I actually thought a lot of the art and scenery was too empty.  I thought with Burton's insanity I would find it too busy and I'd get annoyed, like most most of his movies.  But it felt empty and boring.  And yeah, the emotional aspects were completely terrible.  And seriously, the entire third act could be removed.  It would have been a lot better without it.

I don't need a big ass fucking CG battle in Alice in Wonderland.  What the fuck!

Just saw Alice. What a turgid abortion of a film. It wasn't clever, it wasn't funny, it wasn't even visually interesting. It was boring from start to finish, and so devoid of any original ideas that it retroactively made both Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass seem, somehow, uncreative. It name dropped (and cameoed) those works constantly but never on anything more than a surface level. The last third was especially distinguished mentally-challenged.

Alice, Warrior Princess?
[close]

It also contains the worst scene I can remember seeing in a movie theater:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Johnny Depp, as the inexplicably Scottish-brogued Hatter, performing a CG-assisted pop lock routine to Danny Elfman "hip hop" "music."
[close]

I would have gladly rewatched Avatar instead of suffering through Alice.

Speaking of: Avatar had me thinking that maybe 3D wasn't so bad, but Alice put my head back on straight: I hate 3D and refuse to see any more movies in theaters in 3D. The effect is cheesy and distracting, but worst of all the polarized lenses suck all the life and color out of the film. Both Alice and Avatar will look more vibrant and more lifelike as Blu-rays on my 1080p projector than they did in 3D movie theaters. Fuck Clash, fuck Iron Man, fuck every movie looking to squeeze $5 more out of my ticket by shitting up the third dimension.

Damn, everybody is hating on Alice. The wife is going to want to see this regardless of reviews (which essentially don't exist in Japan - all you get is gushing previews) so I'm probably going to have to sit through it anyway :(

Alice is as incoherent as Pirates 2/3 or Tranformers 2 - it is that level of narrative nonsense.

For me it was Big Fish in 2003.  Everything he's done since then has been kind of miss imo.

Sweeney Todd is helped a lot by Burton working from an existing book - the music is great and the narrative is coherent and strong. It keeps him from running off up his own ass like he usually does the last ten years.

[REC]2

crazy. manages to squeeze just enough out of the first person horror style to remain interesting throughout. Definitely feels like the Aliens in this "franchise". More action, less brutal scares. Similar to the Alien > Aliens comparison I find the first to be vastly superior. But hey, the follow up is pretty awesome on it's own merits. Now on to the spoilers:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Was a little sketchy on the explanation elements of the plot at first. Then I realized that I would have been disappointed if it had just been another zombie infection. This being a demonic possession quickly became the spark that made the movie stand on it's own legs. I'm not entirely fond of the cut in perspective the movie makes halfway through, mostly because it doesn't last long before we return to the main characters and these extra dudes are literally shuffled off into a closet to die. Then the reintroduction of Angela was greeeeat because 1. she's hot, and 2.) it means something bad is bout to go down at the end because theres no way she just "got away". I did kinda laugh at the night vision god vision thing. Finally the ending. Like I said, bad stuff was gonna go down. Angela being infected by Merridis or whatever was great! Awesome turn of character.
[close]

I just overall really had a lot of fun watching the movie. It wasn't as scary but still entertaining as fuck. I'm guessing we're gonna get a third movie. I really hope they try something different. Maybe drop the FPS angle. I dunno.

In the Loop

This was possibly the funniest film I've seen in my life.  I was on the floor laughing for 90 mins straight.  I'm glad I didn't see this in the theater or I would have been obnoxiously loud.  It's sooooooooooooooooooooo well written.  Besides being genius comedy, it was a great movie too.  Where were the oscar nods for this?  Might be my favorite 2009 film.  It was that good.

The Brothers Bloom

There was a thread about this like a week ago and that helped me remember and bring to my attention that it was from the guy who made Brick.  I saw the trailer a while ago and enjoyed Brick, so I checked it out.  I really liked it.  I thought at times it became a bit predictable, but I don't think it was unintentional.

My fav film from 2008.  Great family drama.
I really liked the handheld style of directing.  Worked really well for the type of movie it was.  It really felt like you were watching the lives of these people.

And Anne Hathaway was awesome, and hot, and awesome.

We're talking about whether or not an entire race looks the same, not if someone can remember individuals' names. Furthermore, I have a hard enough time remembering people's names that I meet on a consistent basis (like extended family) - and that has nothing to do with how distinct their physical appearance is.
