I wrote this when he was cast as Deadpool, but it seems like it will continue to work:

Ryan Reynolds cast as sarcastic super hero

Los Angeles, CA - In a surprise move, some Hollywood studio cast the affable Ryan Reynolds as the main character in their latest super hero film where a costumed vigilante fights justice with a sardonic wit.

"We really had to search long and hard for a handsome actor with chiseled good looks that brought earnest smug to the character," said the studio executive, "And we were astounded to see this test footage with [Ryan] Reynolds acting cocky and sarcastic - it was range we never knew he had."

Reynolds, best known for his roles in The Amityville Horror and The Nines, has struggled against being typecasted as a serious, brooding actor. The above average director, who will helm this light action-adventure picture - in what is sure to be as stretch for him - had initial reservations about casting Reynolds.

"See, this guy isn't like all the other super heroes," said the director, "He's a real cheeky f-----. And I wasn't sure [Ryan] was capable of biting sarcasm and deadpan delivery, but he knocked it out of the ballpark."

The fan community, which had been campaigning Reynolds for the role since it was leaked that a script was being written, was notably excited.

"Ryan Reynolds is perfect for this character," wrote one Internet fan on his message board, "He perfectly captures the emotional depth that this character needs - also he is muscular and really sarcastic."

Reynolds will reportedly get into shape for the role by making cutting and derisive remarks in high pressure situations, although friends close to the actor say that it will be revealed later on that he has a heart of gold.

you read the Onion a little TOO much, Willco.

Watched Virus last night.  It was fucking amazing. Dunno how this had been off my radar.

it's essentially an end of the world movie.  Americans devise a virus to us as a deterrent in the 80s, but it gets out into the world ending all vertebrate life within a year except for Antarctica research labs, where it's to cold for the virus to survive.

it's more drama than sci-fi or action film and it's done completely straight and serious.  really well done

Watched A Serious Man and The Hurt Locker. Liked both, but have more questions on The Hurt Locker. I wonder if the film is mostly fantasy, at least from the point after the first bomb. From then on, instead of being a physical fight, it seems to be a mental fight. Many things are thrown in and just left there, which is normally the writer/director begging a question. There are moments of implausibility in a very realistic feeling film.

Saw the Hurt Locker last weekend... was a decent movie, but I expected much more due to all the accloades and the hype. There were plenty of scenes that just dragged on for too long, and the characters were mostly unlikeable one-dimensional army bro stereotypes (though I liked the black dude, he was cool).

I'm indifferent at this point. Don't really care either way. I just don't really see this having any kind of mass appeal or real traction. It's overt goofiness is going to scare away a lot of folks right off the bat. I can't imagine anyone over the age of 30 watching that teaser and thinking it doesn't look completely ridiculous.

anything specific?

The sniper shootout was very America kicks ass/Silly dumb brits.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Highly trained british soldiers get snipered down but American bomb specialists manage to hit and kill all the baddies.

If I want to get into it:

The first bomb where Guy Pearce's character dies doesn't feature the 'trigger-man' viewpoint. There is also a different approach and behavior by Pearce's character. He is more reluctant and cautious, and in a way more scared than William. When Will shows up as replacement, its as though he is behaving to be seen. This is also where you start to get the trigger man camera shots. He disregards the robot and it never comes up again. And so, in spite of doing things in a more dangerous way, he keeps surviving and somehow getting the bomb out. Even the last bomb features an explosion very close to the one that kills Pearce's character but doesn't kill him. Why? They both seemed about as close to the explosions when they went off, but only Will survives.

The reason it wouldn't be fantasy is because there is no consistent viewpoint from which to observe a fantasy other than Will, and Will would be the fantasy if it were so. I think its more a play on male fantasy. That even when Will thinks he has a noble cause to what he's doing, it turns out that the kid didn't die.

Well those weren't british soldiers, they were mercenaries.  Apparently one of them knew how to use a sniper rifle but...yeah.  I thought that scene was mostly trying to show how it would feel to be stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The bomb that killed Pearce's character was a roadside bomb iirc.  It's logical to assume it could have held much more explosives then the bomb strapped to the guy in the end.

Will's character is obviously supposed to show how he is out of tune with normal life and basically really enjoys disarming bombs.  I personally never got the feeling that he was just trying to show off.

It's not that he's trying to show off, but that his behavior is fighting the 'show' of making Americans look scared in the public eye.

The British "soldiers" they run into are mercenaries, not soldiers. They were just rounding up suspected individuals for reward money. I thought this was pretty much made clear.

Tried to watch The Dark Crystal tonight, but I'm reaaaally tired and it's reaaaaaally slow.  Made it 30 mins but I'm gonna have to finish it tomorrow.  The costumes ere really cool.  Though the main guy reminds me of voice acting in early 90s PC adventure games like Loom.  It's all weird and stilted dialogue when he talks.  Everyone else sounds normal as they can be for being strange creatures

The first two-thirds of the movie is fantastic. It's the final one-third that drags everything down, although I really liked the last couple of scenes. It could have been so much greater, but, as it is, it's certainly not a bad scifi movie.

I wasn't all that irritated by the sudden appearance of Freddy Krueger, but he seems underutilized when so much effort is made to shoe-horn his ass in there in the final stretch.  If the same tonal shift had occured earlier on, it probably would've been better recieved, but then more of the movie is wasted fulfilling slasher cliches.  Boyle's not the best at genre blending, but I'm not disappointed with the way it turned out.

The special effects are really amazing too.  If nothing else, I'd watch it again just for the finale.

I think it would have been better without the captain of the other ship killing everyone in the final third. I mean, they'd set up this feeling that the crew, though all highly trained and highly skilled people, were beginning to break down from the stress, even to the point of attacking one another. Even without an outside force, it's not unreasonable to think that they might have gotten into just as much trouble on their own. That's what happened to the first ship, after all.

Got roped into seeing Hot Tub Time Machine matinee

It was ...ok.  There was a lot of potential for jokes, but it's more grin a little amusing than lol funny.  Might be worth a matinee.  Wouldn't pay full price for it.

Gonna go see Chloe and Greenberg this weekend.

I want to see Greenburg, but it's not playing down here yet.  Chloe...will wait for bluray.  I've liked Atom Egoyan's other films, but this is scoring pretty low (for his stuff) on RT.

Yeah, I really want to see Triangle.  Heard lots of good stuff about it.

I finished up The Dark Crystal and it was decent.  It's one of those movies that stands the test of time as a piece of film history and it's interesting to see how it predated a lot of fantasy tropes and what it did for puppet films and Jim Henson, yet for pure entertainment purposes it's very dated and doesn't have a whole lot of substance.  The skeksis were freaky as fuck, I think any kid seeing this would be screwed.  And some of the location designs are really imaginative.  But it's really slow paced and a bit dull imo.  It almost put me to sleep both days I watched it.

Then I finally watched the deleted scenes roll for In the Loop.  Sooooooo good.  The Chad/Liza stuff is lololol

Just got done watching Greenberg. Wife and I enjoyed it, but the people behind us did not and were very vocal about it the entire time. Ahem, you're not seeing a Ben Stiller movie, you're seeing a Noah Baumbach film. Did you really think a film that is playing on one screen in Seattle currently would be a laugh riot Stiller movie?

Ok, watched The Box and I don't get the hate.  I thought it was a solid sci-fi twilight zone movie with great suspense and pacing ala Donnie Darko, a great score, and solid performances.  It also looked fairly nice in terms of the visuals.  I checked the reviews on RT and most of the negative ones just go on and on about how nothing in the movie has any point or makes any sense and the story is ridiculous.  Maybe I just wasn't looking deep enough, but it seemed pretty straight forward to me as long as you believe in

Between Donnie Dark & The Box I'd say Richard Kelly is a better M. Night than M. Night ever was outside of Unbreakable.

Now I'm thinking I gotta check out Southland Tales because everyone says it sucks, but then everyone said The Box sucked too!

I very much liked The Box, but man, I can really understand anybody not digging it.  It gets capital S strange, and I'm not even talking about the plot, moreso about the tonal shifts and the deliberate inscrutability of the whole thing.

good point about the music, which might be the one unassailable strength of the film.

Seven Samurai

Pretty awesome. Slow build leading up to some great battle sequences. Great characters. Surprised it was gonna be that long.

the movies i'm eyeing next: Seventh Seal, M, Yojimbo, Nosferatu, Solaris (original), and Sanjuro to name a few.
