I kind of want to spoil Catfish for myself, I really hate this aura of mystique the marketing team is forcing down my throat

I read some spoilers on IMDb, sounds kind of *yawn* if true.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
All the characters are just some bored old housewife's internet personas, some dude falls in love with one, lots of "Oh you can't talk to her right now, she's visiting her sister in Utah" ensues.

Spoil it.  It's basically what you think it is and (from what I've read of the encounter) ultimately exploitative.  It also casts some pretty irrefutable doubt (irrefutable without making the filmmakers seem totally naive and stupid, although they've certainly tried to that end) over the legitimacy of the project.

Here is my Catfish review:

Quote
To live life is to don a mask each and every day. Our true selves are seldom exposed to the world at large; to show everything to the people we must share our existences with would be to risk the ultimate rejection. We are what we think others want to see, and we live our lives doing this each and every day until it's impossible to tell where the mask ends and we begin. A mere decoration becomes a metaphor for humanity's hard time on planet Earth. We are the masks we wear.

yeah, I kind of got that vibe even just from the buzz and marketing, and after reading the whole story, it sounds like the fakest fake that ever faked since that HOPA resigned using whiteboards

Just got back from seeing Catfish. Very strange movie, not at all what I was expecting. Very melancholy, had a very similar vibe to "Lars and the Real Girl" for me. It's definitely a rental, I wouldn't recommend going to see it in theatres.

I had a friend spoil the twist/ending in Catfish because I gave her free tickets to see the Houston screening.  Sounds good, but I think I'll wait til I forget what it was.

Fight Club
A movie I watched religiously as a teenager (I think it's common for a lot of men from my generation?). I bought it on DVD years back, but never actually had the desire to watch  it.  I happened to find it on Blu Ray super cheap the other day so I bought it and watched it last night.  Either I forgot a lot of shit, or I was just dazzled by the simpler shit when I was younger because it really felt like I was watching it for the first time.  So many neat lines of dialogue I passed over for the more cliche and overused ones everyone knows.  I actually ended up watching it twice.  I watched it with a friend and then when my wife came home she wanted to watch it because she'd never seen it.  oh and the blu ray is great because...

When you put it in, it shows the menu for Never Been Kissed and you're like wtf???  It tripped my friend and I out.  So then we had to do it to my other friend when he came over and I had to do it to my wife when she got home.

Went to go see The Town after drinking. Too bad I drank too much and fell asleep about 30 minutes into the movie. And then after the movie I went into the kitchen of the concession stand thinking it was the bathroom. I was ready to piss into something, I had unzipped my fly and everything.

Went to see The Social Network. I was satisfied. The tracks by Trent Reznor (a musician I previously loathed) were fantastic. I enjoyed everything about the movie with the exception of Jesse Eisenberg. Such a poor casting choice, and normally I like him as an actor. The role was just way too big for him to fill. I can't imagine who I'd put in his place, but I felt he was the weakest part of the movie.

You know, it's odd, but I don't recall anything of the soundtrack in my mind.  And I generally consider myself someone who pays attention to film scores.

Disagree about Eisenberg.  Thought he was fantastic in the role, but that's just me.

same here.  I think that's what turned me off so much for so long.  I literally had no desire to watch the movie for so long because of all the bro love it got.  But despite that, it's fantastic.

The Mummy
I hadn't seen this in years and I didn't particularly care for it when it came out.  But I saw this the other night and it was pretty damn entertaining.  The CG was outdated as hell but idea and execution were pretty good.  I would have liked it better if it involved more exploration of the tomb as they were the most interesting parts but it was still good.  I don't know how The Mummy Returns is but I also got that on Blu Ray so I'll check it out soon.

JFK
Man, this movie blew me away.  I didn't even care that it was 3 1/2 hours long.  I was pretty damn interested the whole time.  Whoever said in here earlier that it was a brilliant piece of propaganda filmmaking was spot on.  It made me want to research more into JFK's death.  It had real emotional impact when it was splicing real footage and fake footage.  That was something W failed to do.  It's W. but not shitty.

Monsters

watched it the other day
it's good.
great locations and atmosphere. smartly minimalistic approach to the creatures. pretty good journey story.
but there's some really awful romance stuff. really cringe worthy dialogue during any kind of relationship building scenes.
the only time the romance angle works is during the really well done ending.
and the ending is fantastic.

Movie will be shit, not even the Nolans can save it now that this hack is involved.
Nolan is just the producer, goyer wrote the script.

Love Battlefield

The first hour of this movie is really great. It's a faced paced crime drama, with some romance thrown in, and it moves from one really tense scene to the next and is just generally compelling throughout. But the last thirty minutes or so slow to a crawl as the melodrama gets shoveled on in great heaps, so that by the time the final scene rolls around you kind of start to hate it. Then, the final scene, which is just so painfully horrible that I just couldn't stand to watch anymore. What a waste.
