The Lovely Bones was fantastic, amazing visuals, great performances and great story, I don't get the hate that the movie has been getting.

It wasn't the book, that's what all the criticism was about.

I didn't care for the film, Jackson fucked it up too much with all his fantasy and whimsy.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture gets a lot of flack, and it's understandable, but I really like it anyway.

Plus, the soundtrack is amazing.

It's so fucking godlike with the lossless BluRay audio. When the overture kicked in at the beginning it's fucking awesome sounding. Then the theme. Fuck. The DNR is annoying as hell, but the sound is so worth it especially with The Motion Picture and Kahn.

Ilia's Theme is so epic and beautiful, it really sets the tone for a movie about exploring where no man has gone before. Then it goes into the bombastic Main Theme, and it's like :rock

I watched Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs last night. Despite having a lot of the usual cartoon movie cliches, like the outcast character finding acceptance, romance, and the father reconnecting with his son, it was cute and funny and I liked it.

Great movie. It's funny just how much better modern South Korean films are compared to Japanese ones.

I wouldn't call Inglorious Bastards' plot simple  :wag

I said consensus best picture, not Bebpo's favorite film of the year. :smug

While we're on the subject of Korean films, A Tale of Two Sisters is also worth watching, although you may be a little confused afterwards.

Hey now, the oscars are yet to come ;)

When I was living in Japan circa 2004-2005 I used to see the poster for Tale of Two Sisters EVERYWHERE.  Poster looked cool.  Wasn't there a US remake like every asian horror film in the past decade?

Honestly I can't think of the last "great" Japanese film I've seen.  In the last 5-6 years the only great one has been Stranger and that's anime.  Live-action in Japan is such a waste.  What happened to Takeshi crime dramas or crazy awesome stuff like Versus/Guitar Wolf?

Nobody Knows, Departures and Tokyo Sonata were all great Japanese films.

I'm still pissed Departures didn't get released on Blu-ray. Totally ruins my plan for buying the Foreign Langauge Oscar winner every year. (Lives of Others and Counterfeiters are on Blu...)

So I'm messing around with the Netflix PS3 streaming service, and I found the uber-low budget action movie that I'm in available under the action category. It's called (Bullets, Blood and a Fistful of) Ca$h. It's horrible. Really awful. Anyway, I'm one the SWAT guys who gets killed about 2-3 minutes into the movie. Good times.

The Hangover was great.  Loved almost every moment of it.  Watched The Book of Eli a few nights ago.  Not a bad movie.  I was worried that the whole thing would be drowned in religious undertones, but not so much.  And Denzel Washington is kicking ass and taking names just as much as Liam Nieson did in Taken.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

I had stuff to say about this movie but all I could think about was how insanely hot the main girl was  :o  I mean I'm not really into the whole asian girl thing, but goddddaaaaaamn if that wasn't the hottest asian girl I've ever seen.  Wow

Oh yeah...about the movie.  I liked it, but it's fairly grim.  I would call JSA sad and depressing, I would call Oldboy and Mr. Vengeance...mean.  The difference being that the characters in JSA were good likable humane characters that you really cared about so the tragedy was just that, tragic.  With the Vengeance trilogy the characters are more Tarantino-esque good people who do bad things and get what's due to them and it sucks for everyone involved but it's not really something to cry about.  I'm just glad the
spoiler (click to show/hide)
father got owned at the end, because he really felt the most "evil' of them all.  Even before his search for revenge, when he lets his dedicated worker slice himself up and kill his own family.  Plus he killed the hot girl and that is a huge  :wag in my book so I wanted him brought to justice.  The victim was definitely the main guy.  He was against the kidnapping and he tried everything he could to help people and be good and instead bad stuff happens to him the entire film and he dies :\
[close]

I thought Mr. Vengeance was the funniest of the trilogy.  There were a lot of lol bits throughout.  The directing was stylish and the pacing was pretty good.  I dunno.  Good movie and best of the three in actually dealing with the theme of revenge.  But wasn't exactly the most "fun".  The first 30 mins were pretty fun!  But after the deaths start it's >_< mixed with some lols.

So far I really liked JSA and Thirst more than the Vengeance trilogy.  In terms of the trilogy I think Oldboy & Mr. Vengeance are around the same quality level of good movie, with Oldboy being a bit better for the creative premise and the hallway action scene which is super awesome, and Lady Vengeance is was just kind of dull.

Will watch I'm a Cyborg and Three Extremes next.

Oh and QUESTIONS because there was a bit in Mr. Vengeance I was confused about:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The girl who is his sister and needs the kidney.  Is that the short haired girl living with him?  Or was that the girl who committed suicide in the tub?

Basically I was confused about who the girl who died in the tub was, since she was only introduced into the story a scene or two before.  If that was his sister, then why was the girl he was living with so dedicated to getting the money?  Enough to kidnap the little girl?

It's been a while since I saw it, but I think it goes... a little something like this...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the girl who helped with the kidnapping was his girlfriend, who was borderline commie (humorous, this being a south korean film and all) and thus all for sticking it to the suit at the helm of a big corporation

My g/f is a big movie-watcher, so I've seen a lot more than recently.

Book of Eli - fairly enjoyable, nice plot twist
Lars and the Real Girl - pretty strange movie, wasn't really my thing
Star Trek - really liked this one, nice special effects and a cool story (I love time travel)
The Lovely Bones - strange movie as well, didn't like the ending, but there were some parts of the movie that were very visually awesome

Watched lots of movies that everyone has already seen.

One Hour Photo - awesome, and probably the one I enjoyed the most.  And it was the director's first feature movie - holy crap.  Everyone in this was amazing, Robin Williams' character was amazing, and I loved the in-your-face visuals, design and colour palettes.  Loved the ending.
CopLand - awesome.  Felt lots of empathy for Stallone's great character.  Not what I was expecting at all.  Ending was sweeeeeet.
What Lies Beneath - awesome.  The ending sequences are great.  The "early" CG of the vehicle sequences pulled me out a bit, but otherwise awesome.
Saving Private Ryan - very enjoyable.  It's kind of sad (in terms of me, not the movie), but the action scenes reminded me of videogames.
Elizabeth - very enjoyable.
The Deer Hunter - sacrilege, but I fast-forwarded through the second half because it was just going too slow and wandering.  I think I'd enjoy it but I wasn't in the mood for a wandering film.
Rogue - ugh, utterly bog standard film about a killer croc.  Why I expected more than that is beyond me.  Maybe because the director did the lauded Wolf Creek (which I haven't seen).

The Chaser just became the very best movie I've ever seen about a pimp (sorry Street Smart), or a pimp/ex dirty cop if you want to get technical about it.  That pimp puts his skills to use to find out why all his girls keep disappearing, and to where, and what does that ultra-creepy dude with the horrifying bathroom/murder chamber has to do with it all.

There's no unearned sentiment, there's just a hard-edged thriller that plays out kinda like a cop movie without an actual cop protagonist.  There's nothing particularly flashy, but all the elements congeal into a frequently gasp-inducing whole.  The remake rights have been bought by Warner Bros., but its unlikely that they would make a version as intense, as gritty, as morally teetering as this film is, or just as freaking excellent.  Bottom line - See This Movie.
