Allen and Albert Hughes ("The Book of Eli") are in talks with Warner Bros. to direct the live-action version of "Akira," based on Katsuhiro Otomo's graphic novel. "Akira" was first adapted as a feature in 1988 as an animated film which Otomo directed.According to Variety, Warner Bros. acquired the "Akira" rights with Legendary Pictures from publisher Kodansha two years ago.The script was written by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby and Gary Whitta. The film will be set in New Manhattan, a city that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years earlier.

Guessing he's at least getting a payday even if the only thing they're using from his script is the stupid Manhattan setting.

Someone told me that The Book of Eli was greenlit, more or less, because of the writer's strike and was a "shovel ready" production that Warners was anxious to push through as a result. It got delayed and such, but Whitta's rapid ascent is probably due in part that he had a sell-able spec at a time when the studio was desperate.

Also, Whitta is going to make mad money writing all kinds of drafts that he'll never get credit for or we might ever hear about. That's the best part about selling out. I can't wait to write three or four screenplays completely rewritten by other dudes or tossed in the trash can for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Yeah. Like I said, the original draft is cliche city (though again I scanned it, didn't bother with a full read). The logline was enough to get people interested and the concept was well worn so they put money down and got a bunch of hired hands to iron the fuck out of it before production. He's one of the lucky ones. :'(

"Well, Melissa, I'm overjoyed at the boffo box office for Fart Police...I'm changing things up a little bit for my next project.  The Weinsteins and I are working on a real passion project of mine called Monsters and Madmen...it's a germ of an idea I've had for years, and now I'm overjoyed to finally see it happen.  It'll be a totally raw, action-packed film."

LA is expensive as fuck (in LA county sales tax is getting fucking close to 10%!), but if you want to do ANYTHING in film/television you need to live in the area.

I feel for Willco as writing seems to be one of the highest competition fields. About 90% of one of my English classes last year were people trying to break in. I was only taking it to fullfill the general ed requirement.

Computer classes are full of people thinking they'll be making Transformers 3 or Modern Warfare 3 next year.

I dug Dune's art design, cinematography, and the sandworm effects.  I agree that the movie is a mess, but it's a gorgeous mess.

Vittorio Storaro did the cinematography and he tried to compensate for the extreme low-budget by making it look like a fancy theatrical production.

It didn't work.

Plus, it was all shot somewhere in Eastern Europe so you have all these mediocre Czech actors with horrible, thick accents playing characters who are supposed to look Middle Eastern.

All the desert scenes were obviously shot either on a soundstage or on bluescreen.

It's just terrible.

BTW An Education was kind of enjoyable-but-forgettable until the last thirty seconds or so. Then it literally shits the bed and left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Ultimately, I would have to give it a pass, unless you have two hours to kill and there's literally nothing else to watch.

the transfer on 36th chamber was pretty bad, but then to be absolutely honest it showed all the technical errors inherent in shaw productions, so i don't know if i want it to be much better.

what's it called when the main image is flat and the borders are all out of focus?  that was half the film.

Green Zone

Felt very paint-by-numbers, which is also how the first Bourne movie struck me when I saw it in the theatre.  I came around on Bourne but I don't think that's gonna happen here.

It doesn't have good enough set pieces to work as an action movie and it's too blunt to work as a piece of political art.  So it winds up being a competent thriller with some borderline excruciating expository dialogue (Brian Helgeland? wtf?).

Brendan Gleeson was basically playing a toned-down version of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character from Charlie Wilson's war: the heavyset, rumpled career intelligence officer who can cut through the bullshit.  Prolly not a comparison he'd want to invite, since PSH's take is way better.

They filmed part of this at or around my campus. I remember walking out of one of the buildings and seeing Ellen Barkin chilling in front of her trailer smoking a cigarette. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson had a trailer set up too but I didn't see him around. Pretty disorienting. :spin

EDIT - Actually watched the trailer. 50 plays basically the same character in every movie (mush-mouthed disinterested drug dealer) yet still doesn't seem to be much of an actor. I'm interested in seeing that Abel Ferrara Jekyll and Hyde starring 50 but my hype is draining. :'(
