Have you seen the Guy Ritchie movie Revolver? It is really really weird.
man I hated that movie.
I'm amazed that anybody ever gave him money to do anything else, ever, after that.

Its not that its just bad (although its plenty terrible), its all just so damn up its own ass.  It doesn't even make sense internally.  Its like watching a dude who sucks at crime thrillers also make a crappy and half-assed philosophy statement.  How it didn't ruin at least one career is beyond me.

and Still Walking was freaking great.

i enjoyed a prophet, but don't get all the buzz it got. the lead actor's performance was great, though.

to me it felt like his rise to the top was way too easy. there isn't a single moment in the movie that made me feel that his life was in real danger; that he could actually die.

Isn't that kind of where the whole religious subtext plays in, though? The character is put in many situations where he should conceivably be killed, but each time divine intervention seems to come into play and he survives miraculously unscathed (the deer scene, the shootout in the van etc.). That kind of plays into Malik being some sort of spiritual figure -- a prophet, one could say :smug -- and seems to give his rise to power some sort of divine subtext. I thought it was an interesting way to go with the material, and certainly not something I've seen in a lot of crime films.

iirc, the title was in reference to him being able to see into the future or something. but i don't remember it being referred to other than in the deer scene. i could be wrong, though--it's a been quite a while since i saw it.

oh yeah, i thought the scenes with the dead guy should've been fleshed out more. they're just... there. it felt underutilized to me. what'd you think of those?

I liked the fact that the scenes with the dead guy are just there, and they don't really explain exactly what's going; is Malik simply imagining things and plagued by guilt, or is the dude offering him some sort of spiritual guidance? The scene where they watch the guys playing basketball seems to suggest he's more than just an apparition, but perhaps some sort of divine presence helping Malik makes his moves in advance. I've only seen the film once and didn't really wrap my head around the religious subtext too much, but I think in both cases it's clear Malik is supposed to be guided by some sort of divine presence, hence him getting these visions and being able to plan for events that haven't happened yet (like the deer) and being able to walk out of a situation that should have killed him without even ruffling his feathers.

Had what's got to be one of the weirdest film classes of all time earlier tonight. I'm taking one class this semester where the entire semester is dedicated to analyzing a single film, and in this case they picked Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot. To put the film into perspective and compare it to more modern fare, tonight we screened clips from Mrs. Doubtfire, White Chicks and Big Mama's House. :spin

What's the benefit of film vs digital for something that's black and white?  I've heard that film only gives you more color latitude over digital, right?

...goddamn, bro, can't you see what all the movies have in common?  I imagine the topic is something like the degeneration of the screwball comedy or how the tropes invented by Wilder in Some Like It Hot are still in wide use today.

It wouldn't make sense for the instructor to be trying to teach how the genre is getting worse and then agreeing to screen all of White Chicks though.  My guess is that it's just to point out contemporary examples of cross-dressing that those students have already seen.  The cross-dressing itself wasn't such a big deal in Some Like It Hot, it was the romantic relationships that they were complicating which was funny.

True Lies

They don't make such great mindless movies anymore. A very funny flick with awesome action sequences.

Groundhog Day

Pretty good. More interesting than funny.

Pandorum

Boring. The final twist was unexpected, though. Still a shitty movie.

Although I find Big Lebowski to be a great movie, I don't really consider it laugh out loud funny aside from cremation + funeral + ashes part.

I just don't think of comedy when I think of the 90's. And in fact, outside of Ed Wood, Boomerang and Friday I struggle coming up with 90's comedy movies that have remotely aged well. Home Alone?

Dumb and Dumber is still great. Who cares if a lot of the humor is juvenile? If its funny, then it works. Carrey has never been funnier and Daniels even outdoes him.

I can get down with this.  It's at the very least the most thoughtful comedy of the 90s.  And it's actually funny despite all that.

One more for Groundhog Day.  Also, The Birdcage is underrated.

Not a lot of really funny movies in the 90's, but I don't think it's different from other decades.  TV is a much better medium for comedy than film, Two And A Half Men notwithstanding.

Groundhog Day really is a great film.  Its easily the best thing Bill Murray was in for that whole decade, and as one of the best comic actors of all time one of his best films should be a strong contender for comedy of the decade.
