Anyone here ever seen a Ralph Bakshi film (not counting the animated LOTR from the eighties)? I've been rewatching Coonskin, Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic a lot recently. I love this dude's style.

yes

there was a video store that used to put all cartoons in the kids section, so when i was a teen i ended up watching all of them

coonskin is my absolute favorite of them.

cool world is really meh.

Wizards is my favorite of his.

Lord of the Rings is kind of a nostalgic favorite since I used to rent that all the time when I was little long before I even knew they were based on books or anything.

Have you watched any of the ones I mentioned though? Wizards is good but kind of pales in comparison to his more radical 70s stuff. Heavy Traffic is probably my all-around favorite, but Coonskin gets props for being so gung-ho about what it's trying to do.

I saw Kick-Ass this afternoon. It was entertaining, I guess. In a totally disposable, "the action was neat" kind of way.

It seemed like it had a pretty cool premise, but it degraded into pretty much every other superhero film ever, except with more graphic violence. I guess the fact that they made a Mark Millar story seem watchable is an accomplishment in of itself.

Old fashion, balls to the wall, Samuel Jackson screaming, action movie. Loved it, had more fun with it than Kick Ass.

Pretty much how I felt. It was worth seeing but really disposable. Nic Cage during the fire scene was just plain awesome classic Nic Cage acting though.

It got to the point that Kick-Ass was dragging the movie down and I was just waiting for more Big Daddy/Hit Girl scenes.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

This has to be the most surreal drug trip move since Fear & Loathing.  I'm not quite sure what Herzog was trying to say with this film, or even what he was trying to do with it.  But between REPTILE CAM and "his soul is still dancing" and ridiculous performances by all the actors involved, I was very entertained.

It's interesting nevertheless (though I'm biased because I love Lady GaGa), and it wouldn't really be out-of-place because at this point Tarantino's movies seem to be more about parodying himself than anything else.

This seems as likely as that Faster Pussycat remake with Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. As in, just a kooky idea QT thought up, let the press know about and will subsequently forget in the next week or so.

For every project he actually does, he seems to announce five more that never see the light of day.

Martin Scorsese's sci-fi family movie now has a release date of Dec 9th 2011 and will be officially shot in 3D (not post-production 3D ala Alice or Clash of the Titans). It has been rumored for a while but at least it's official it won't be the post-production shit that looks horrible.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118017699.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&ref=vertfilm

A 3D blockbuster directed by Martin Scorsese where one of the main characters is a robot. So pretty much another Goodfellas/Casino. It stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, and Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl from Kick-Ass).

What the fuck.

I usually trust Scorsese, but what the fuck indeed.

Next Bond postponed indefinitely :bow

I'm sure whoever buys MGM will continue the franchise.  It's done pretty well since the reboot.  I wish they would make more movies like Casino Royale, though.

The big win is that Sam Mendes is out.

And with any luck, James Bond will be re cast.

No chance of Bond being recast. Daniel Craig has the most critical praise of any Bond actor since Sean Connery and his two films are the highest grossing of the entire series. They'll hold onto him as long as they possibly can. Hell they upped his contract from 3 films to 5 film after the last one. He is in it for the long haul. They just can't continue till they actually have the money to fund it. Nothing to do with the franchise itself.

MGM's problems also halted The Hobbit. I doubt the first one will be ready by 2012 (the original date was 2011 but was pushed back to 2012 due to all this mess) at this rate if they aren't bought quickly.

It's crazy the studio with The Hobbit and James Bond still can't find someone to buy them.

MGM didn't want to be bought. They also didn't want to sell properties. Everyone is in line to do so, but MGS insisted on waiting for some financiers to bail them out, but time ain't stopping.

Halting Hobbit, and now James Bond, is just more fuel to the fire. They are going to either get bought, or sell their properties till they have enough money.

And whoever gets James Bond, will put their own producers on it, and depending on the studio they might very well not bring back Daniel Craig, in favor of an actor that has closer ties to the studio.

Daniel is only in it for the long haul, if MGM themselves make James Bond.

fact: Pierce Brosnan was the biggest bond since Connery, and each Bond of his broke previous records.

MGM doesn't actually make the movies. EON does. EON is the company that has actually developed and hired the writer/director/star of all the Bond movies going back to Dr. No. EON is the studio that signed Daniel Craig.

fact: Pierce Brosnan was the biggest bond since Connery, and each Bond of his broke previous records.
Sorry to burst your bubble but Daniel Craig's Bond movies made more than Pierce Brosnan's. A LOT more. It's not even close.

1. Casino Royale:$594,239,066
2. Quantum of Solace: $586,090,727
3. Die Another Day: $431,971,116   (Brosnan's highest grossing Bond film)

Even adjusted for inflation Daniel Craig's films are the top grossing Bond films since Connery. He is the most successful Bond actor since Connery, period.

Yep, exactly. I have no idea why Wrika just made up stuff off the top of his head. MGM doesn't film the Bond movies, EON does. And has been since Dr. No. They always are the ones who hire the new Bond actor as well. And they are the ones who upped Craig's contract from 3 to 5 films after Casino Royale became the highest grossing Bond movie of all time (not a Brosnan movie  :o)
