I hope Brad Bird doing MI4 means Abrams is now in the market to actually go back and do The Dark Tower. He's definitely my favourite young new director. He reminds me of Spielberg. In many ways, I've never went through the Spielberg generation of films. By the time I was old enough to understand E.T, it was already out dated. I have to say though, I really liked A.I.

So that's why I'm not into Spielberg. Though I recognize that at one time, he was great.

There is so much wrong in this post, amazing.

that's right.  I don't really like Spielberg films THAT much. Is that a crime now?

???

I imagine, someone will be in my exact position and say "I don't like Abram films" 20 odd years from now. Because well, those films cater to a different generation.

I think you are forgetting of a little jj abrams movie in pre production called star trek 2. Also how in the world is et outdated? It's timeless. You may not like it for the Spielberg sentimentality but calling it dated?

What do you think about close encounters?

Nice. I had totally forgotten about ST 2. Loved the first one to bits and it's my MOTY 2008. I still watch it every month or so. I love it.
Never watched close encounters, although I intend to now. Outdated as in, technologically outdated. :(

I am a fan of his trek but he has only done two movies, both from pre-established franchises not really anything enough to be a fan of his directing from. I find the Spielberg comparison odd because Abrams has no distinct vision or unique films, which Spielberg has like him or not.

Never really thought of it like that. It's just that there's this feeling I get when watching his films, this very odd feeling that resembles a Spielberg vibe. I think its the action sequences? Very fast-paced and usually simple to understand, yet comprehensive story lines that don't force you to over think too much.

googled "abrams next spielberg" and surprised I'm not the only one with such sympathies.

Oh and by the way. I think I remember why I forgot about him doing ST 2. I remember hearing he wasn't really sure he'd be directing the sequel somewhere.

 Aha! http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/11/17/jj-abrams-still-unsure-about-directing-the-star-trek-sequel/

I still think he needs something that really has a distinct style that is his, he hasn't had his Jaws yet. He needs that "it" movie that isn't just some studio franchise already in existince .

I guess Regarding Henry is the closest thing he has done to that as a writer lol.

Certainly a fantastic movie. But not better than Aladdin, Little Mermaid, 101 Dalmations, Alice in Wonderland and my personal favorite...The Lady and the Tramp.

Honestly though, this is a slippery slope because ranking animated Disney movies is like ranking my favorite foods. I don't fucking know, and I think the bulk of the animated Disney flicks are all amazing pieces of movie making. But I think some people give Beauty and the Beast more credit than it really deserves because it was simply given an nomination for best picture.

Toy Story 3 is going to be awesome, but why are they making Cars 2?  ???
Cars did pretty good box office numbers, but the merchandising was massively successful, outpacing every other Pixar release.

I'd guess that's why.  It sure as hell ain't due to the huge crossover appeal of Larry the Cable Guy.

Yeah, you're right, I was thinking Cars was only a modest success from a BO point-of-view, I didn't think about the merchandising. That stuff was everywhere, and probably still is I assume. It's a lot easier to sell toy cars than talking rats or an old man doll, I guess.

101 Dalmations?!?

The only 1960's Disney animated movie that's better than any of the 90's Renaissance ones is Jungle Book. The rest of the output in the 60s and 70s was just sloppy and filled with rough animation and re-used animation.

The 40s, 50s, 1960-66, 1988-1994 are the best eras for Disney animation. From 1966 (when Walt died) through 1987 was a bad time. Black Cauldron was out-grossed by the CARE BEARS MOVIE the year it came out.

Robin Hood is the most embarassing movie in all of the Disney animated canon. There is barely any original animation in it at all and they ran out of money while making it so it doesn't even have an ending:

As for Winnie the Pooh, it's great but again they reused a lot of animation from Jungle Book in it.

It was released in 77 though and they were doing slightly better then by bringing in some new blood. Fox and the Hound finished out the 70s (it wasn't realeased until '81 though) and actually had original animation. The bear in that movie was one of the first things Glen Keane (The Beast, Aladdin, etc) did at Disney.

Great Mouse Detective actually was cool in that they used CGI in it, despite firing Lasseter for attempting that a few years earlier with Where the Wild Things Are.

Yes. Barely any original animation in it. Are you kidding me? Did you get that from a youtube? And it does have an ending. wtf ???

In any case, 70's animation in general is cheap as fuck across the board, whether it's Hannah-Barbera, Disney, or animu. Robin Hood being cheaper than past efforts doesn't take away from the fact it's still an enjoyable movie.

Watch it again. The movie just ends.

Ken Anderson (who did the designs) was PISSED at how the movie turned out. Little John was basically Baloo. Robin Hood used Peter Pans costume. Prince John resued the Kings costume from Bedknobs & Broomsticks. And the vultures and elephants were lifted from Jungle Book. On top of that they didn't even finish the movie.

I actually saw it again a week ago and it's the lowest point they ever hit.

The Rescuers and Fox and the Hound were much better due to bringing in new blood like Don Bluth and Glen Keane.

Yea they ran out of money and couldn't really end it, but the original version is on the disc:
Quote
In it, we see Robin Hood wounded after his fall from the castle wall. Prince John and Sir Hiss track him to the church where they find Maid Marion attending to him. Just as Prince John goes in for the kill, King Richard arrives and stops him.

Then it ends with the wedding.

They don't focus entire character animation courses on The Lion King. They do with Pinnochio though and there are rumors that some courses may start using WALL-E with it soon.

Lion King was the height of the Rennaisance though and if Frank Wells didn't die who knows how good the following movies would've turned out.

There's some famous stories about Olivier's and Hoffman's interactions during the making of that movie.  How diametrically opposed their acting styles were and how silly Olivier thought the whole "method acting" thing was.

Interesting Variety article on script doctors. Motherfuckers can clock like $60,000 a day for penning rewrites under the table :o

Also interesting that apparently it's how Shane Black has been keeping himself busy the last few years.

I know a couple and they make ridiculous sums of money. The downside is that I feel the growing script doctor trade is a large reason why these tentpole flicks are so disjointed nowadays. Too many cooks, and all of that.

A decade or two ago, the studio would at least have the decency to hand it off to one script doctor - if that. Now, only God knows how many writers touch the screenplay for a tentpole flick.

Its the Barton Fink effect, the studio goes after people who have big names but can't otherwise get anything else off the ground.  It doesn't matter that their resumes in no way mesh with a dinosaur-eating-people adventure flick, get me that dude who wrote Citizen Ruth!

David Mamet remains in the arthouse ghetto with his actual films, but he's got credits on shitloads of 'real' studio pictures.  Same with Noah Baumbach, Alexander Payne, and god only knows how many others.

But google it. The dude had his hand in pretty much every good-to-great film from the late 60's/70's. It's kind of shocking just how many amazing flicks he contributed to in some way, openly or in secret.

Dead Like Me: Life After Death

Average. Sadly. Was a big fan of the show. The movie is still enjoyable in more of a "the gang is back together" sort of way. Well for the most part since two of the main characters didn't return.

It seemed like whoever wrote the movie forgot all the character development the show had and reset everyone to their most basic 1-dimensional selves. The story was really simple and is kind of disjointed because isn't really the main focus and only loosely keeps everything together.

Really, the only really positive thing to come out of the movie was Reggie. She grew up and filled out real good. Real good. Total hottie now.

6/10 for the movie.
9/10 for Reggie.

it doesn't find the tone of horror and humor at all and feels content to woodenly ape Raimi and Hammer providing entertaining emulations of neither.

:'( I had this lined up to watch this coming weekend. Disappointing.

Will large amounts of beer make it watchable/passably entertaining?
