Superman Returns did Superman as good as it could be done.

Even if we agree that it did, Superman Returns still wasn't a very good movie.

Because it was distinguished mentally-challenged? And people revolted when it leaked out? Abrams was getting death threats over that.

gene hackman's luthor stole intercontinental ballistic missiles, reprogrammed them, and almost sank california, with only a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow and a whore as his assistants

as a kid i hated that he was portrayed as a stumbling fuckup who lived in a subway, but now i realize he was truly the greatest criminal mind of his generation

Superman is a great character who has been watered-down and diluted over the years by writers who refuse to portray him as anything less than a scoutmaster.  Read some of the early stuff - it's primitive, and the art is crude, but there's this wild abandon to it and Superman occasionally does some pretty devious shit to achieve his goals.

Quentin Tarantino says Superman Returns is his favorite super hero movie ever made and his favorite movie of 2006 so PD has a ally in him I guess.

Synder's Suprman will suck. I don't ever expect a Superman movie to top what Donner did.

Superman Returns did Superman as good as it could be done.

Even if we agree that it did, Superman Returns still wasn't a very good movie.

But we won't agree on that, because Superman II is the best Superman movie.

Superman Returns blew only slightly less than Superman III, Starring Richard Pryor, featuring a PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING MATCH ON THE MOON.

Aronofsky is a brilliant director. One of the best working today. Even if the script was awful he could probably turn it into something watchable.

The only reason I am allowing myself to be somewhat hyped is the fact from what I read the head of Fox promised Aronofsky James Cameron level creative freedom where they will let him do whatever he wants and not interfere, which convinced him to do it.

I'll believe it when I see it. There are so many things I'd like to see in a Wolverine film, and a lot of them don't have anything to do with action. The guy is essentially immortal - I'd love to see him dealing with people aging around him. Without being distinguished mentally-challenged in a Benjy Buttonz way

Paranormal Activity 2
More of the same.  If you liked the first one, you should find this one enjoyable.  If you hated the first one, you'll hate this one.  Still a great theater experience.  I wouldn't care if I didn't see it in theater.  And unlike the first, there are some truly scary moments, but it's not creepy scary, they (sadly) rely more on cheap boo tactics.  Also,
spoiler (click to show/hide)
it's a continuation of the first.  Yes.  It's a continuation of the first.  It's the same fucking demon and Katie is back in this one.  It's a fucking prequel.  They do a half assed job of trying to insert a back story about Katie's G-Ma making a deal with a demon for riches so you know where it's going.
[close]
I was so fucking pissed.  You find out about 5 minutes into the movie and you can where they're going with the future installments in the series and it doesn't look good.  Also, it feels really fucking short and the ending is soooooooo fucking weak compared to the first (which already wasn't exactly incredible).  You're seriously left thinking "What the fuck?  That's the best you could do??"  Most of the things you've already seen in the first one.  They use the same tactics and they're a lot less subtle.  I don't know if they ran out of ideas or they were trying to do the same things so it stays familiar with audiences and you didn't get the Blair Witch Project 2 shit going on.  Either way... entertaining with an audience.  Not as good as the first.  Pretty fun flick.

2001 is super boring. Yeah, I get it, space is supposed to be boring and mentally taxing and this contributes to blah blah blah. I don't care. You can try to justify why Kubrick did everything he did they way he did, but when you boil it down it is a long, obtuse, pretentious, non-entertaining flick.

Ferris Bueller is amazing, and I could watch it multiple times. One of the only movies that makes me so nostalgic I almost want to cry. The end is just so perfect, with Bueller realizing one phase of life is ending and that he might not see his friends nearly as much in the next one. Just puts my stomach in knots

Fuck, I need to buy it.

Jaden Smith and M. Night are two of the worst things about modern hollywood, if not the worst. But he gets to write scripts that are actually made into real movies. Shitty directors and shitty actors or not, he is still getting scripts produced. He is living the dream.

On the other hand,  he loved Indiana Jones 4 and got mad when I mocked him for it so fuck him.

Ridley Scott's Alien prequel script leaked and Fox is sending cease and desists to any site that posts the story details, but they're still out there.

Quote
* The script tells of the space jockeys traveling from planet to planet and terraforming them. The process is essentially transforming a planet where living beings can exist.

* The aliens are used by the space jockeys (known as "Growers" in the script) in their terraforming process as some sort of biological tools. They usually don't develop into the creatures that we know, but do so during the latest effort.

* The space jockeys are holding two human slave farmers captive. They are named Fin and Karik and are forced (via mind control) to engage in sexual activity. (The twist: they're both male).

* The idea behind the man-on-man action is apparently that the growers want their human slaves to breed. They have no idea about human genders as they are a single sex race and so things get a little confused.

* The signature alien won't appear until the latter half of the film when it fully develops.

* There will be a spaceship crew, consisting of a black female named Oliver, similar to Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein) from "Aliens." And another female crew member named Truks, who Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans) is rumored to play.

* Ridley Scott has met with Lance Henriksen to appear in the film.

How can you feel sorry for an asshole of M Night's caliber? He still doesn't realize he done goofed. Avatar doubled its budget, thus guaranteeing he gets greenlit for more shit in the future. But overall his name is worth little to viewers. I've been in theaters multiple times when a trailer for his films has came on, and the moment his name appeared on the screen people audibly groaned lol

Why not make the two slaves female? That would sell much better

the estimated budget for Devil was around $10,000,000.  it's made 30 million in the US and 13 million overseas and just opened a couple of days ago in about 60 percent of the overseas market.  This dude is getting greenlit again.  He makes cheap movies that generate enough interest to triple and quadruple the budgets.  He's a modern George Romero.

A Clockwork Orange is great but not on par with 2001 or Barry Lyndon. Dr. Strangelove, too, is fantastic, but I never was as big a fan as others.

I truly feel that in terms of writing, cinematography, and general storytelling Barry Lyndon stands as Kubrick's finest. It's a shame it's often not brought up amongst his more prolific films like the aforementioned movies. It truly is one of the most under-appreciated "epic" films I've ever seen.

Such a beaut, too.

Watched RED. TLDR review: It's great. Will see again on the big screen whenever it opens here.

It seems like there are a lot of "small group of highly skilled military individuals are foolishly doublecrossed and antics ensue." I mean, that goes back to the '80s action formula, but we're seeing a resurgence these past 12 months. The Expendables, The Losers, The A-Team (a remake of that '80s formula), and now this. Haven't yet seen anything but RED and The Losers.

RED is pretty much better in every way than The Losers, which is the most direct competition as both are based on comics, tend to keep as much of the "comicbook reality" feel to them, and have similar plotlines. Warren Ellis is the man. His stuff works because he doesn't focus on the macho killstreak and one-liner quips exclusively; his writing is punctuated with moments of human interaction and recognizable, real-world human quirks.

Lots of big name actors, which surely has Ellis nervously feeling as though a lot is riding on the quality of his initial work, which isn't entirely fair. Sadly, Bruce Willis is the least memorable performance; he's doing Bruce Willis, and doesn't really play up the "old" aspect of a retired government operative. Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, Kurt Russell... these are guys that are 20~25 years past their action movie prime. The point is to have someone who doesn't seem viable anymore. Willis is still benefiting from too many HGH injections to be seen as old. Ah, well. Morgan Freeman also seems like he's playing Morgan Freeman, but is at least doing the "old" part right. John Malkovich is perfect. Just perfect. Helen Mirren as well, and I would still smash that action. What a classy, lovely, compelling woman. Whomever the female lead was, I've never seen her before, but she was good. She looked like every girl I had a crush on in college, so I'm probably biased.

Good to know it's comparable to The Losers but better, I thought The Losers fell flat on its premise. I hadn't read the comic but it just seemed like there was so much potential lost in its own seriousness and contrived plot twist.
