I watched Frantic which I had never seen before. The first half is really good. Really suspenseful. Really immerses you. The second half of the film is less good unfortunately and devolves a bit.

I do really like the pacing of it though. Amazing to me how the pacing in movies has ratcheted up from even 20 years ago and almost all films I see feel like they are moving way too fast. I also like how Harrison Ford was just a normal dude for most of the movie. If it was made now he would be a bad-ass or something like in Taken.

Yep, Contact is a great film. Watched it a few times. It's a very intruiging and touching movie, and the science/religion undertone is also well played out this time around.

Anyway, I've watched a few movies the last few days...

Scott Pilgrim

It was great. Never read the comic but I liked how dynamic and funny the movie was. Can't wait for the sequels.

How to Train a Dragon

Better than expected. Still not better than the average Pixar movie, though.

Triangle just felt too contrived to me. Good, but contrived. Timecrimes came across as more "realistic". Both are fun movies though.

127 hours: it was good in making me feel like shit for a few minutes afterwards.

i saw the devil: no other country does thrillers better than koreans. brutal.

lovers of the artic circle: everything came together in the end clearing a lot of the complaints i had. thoroughly enjoyed it.

enter the void: experience of the year. see it in the theaters if possible, not sure how it'll translate on our home telies.

The Town
Awesome movie.  Hit all the right notes for a crime drama.  It didn't do anything crazy but it took the tried and true formula and executed it perfectly

Easy A
Way funnier than I expected.  Surprisingly witty and fun.  Could be in the same league as Mean Girls

Brief Interview With Hideous Men
O.o

Not sure what to say.  Being drunk while watching this probably wasn't the best idea but I think it would have been hard to follow either way.  And the odd editing choices made it even more difficult to follow.  I need to watch it again but I can say that it had some genuinely hilarious scenes and it really hits home in certain parts about how it feels to be an average guy chasing after women and the stupid shit we do.

Tangled
:) :) :)

Awesome movie.  I was really expecting Disney's Shrek with it.  Especially after P&TF bombed.  But man, it was so good.  If P&TF was too much like classic disney, then Tangled was the perfect combination of modern 3D animation and classic 2D.  Jokes were more accessible to the newer generation who want something slightly more "edgy" but they don't cross into the obnoxious territory like Dreamworks.  The songs are great, the music is great, the art style is FANTASTIC.  This movie was really, really, really awesome.

And my favorite part...

The 3D was incredible.  It's the first time since Avatar I thought it was actually worth it.  It's not gimmicky either but there are plenty of scenes that make you say "wow".  This will probably be the first 3D movie I purchase.

Seriously, this is animation that deserves your money.  It's classic Disney to the core.  There's even some blood!  :o

Assault Girls

I love Mamoru Oshii. He's made some of my absolute all-time favorite movies. Having said that, he really, really sucks at live-action. It's not something that I can really understand properly, but that's the case. It's almost like animation Oshii and live-action Oshii are two different people. What makes his animated movies so great are completely absent from his live-action efforts. They invariably end up being clunky, inscrutable, visually bland, and dull, all opposites to how his animated movies are. I just don't get it. But Assault Girls...man, I just don't know what's going on here at all. It's really short [70 minutes] so you can't really expect a whole lot, and I didn't, but I was still shocked. There's no plot, the characters are as thin as they possibly can be, and, worst of all, there are only two short action scenes. You would think, going in, that this is probably just one long action scene, which would actually be decent, since the action isn't half-bad. But there's an intro that lasts nearly five minutes and a section in the middle with no dialog and no action [just the four characters wandering aimlessly] for nearly 25 minutes, more than a third of the total runtime!! Add in three Japanese actors speaking horrible-written dialog in English and Rinko Kikushi acting like a mentally-distinguished mentally-challenged mute and you've got a movie. I guess. It feels like a first-time director pulled out an old student film and padded it out a bit. Mamoru Oshii, why do you keep doing live-action?

It's got Meisa Kuroki in fetish gear running around. I watch Epson commercials just because she's in them. I stare at Uniqlo ads just because she's in them. I'll eventually sit through Oshii's self-indulgent movie for the same reason.

His other one, the one about playing games, where players are wearing virtual armor -- in some kind of post-soviet locale. That was pretty, but also boring as a movie about shooting could possibly be.

Avalon.

It just never really gelled into the philosophical Matrix-without-the-action scifi movie it seemed it wanted to be. It was also far too slow and inscrutable. Avalon at least had a point though, Assault Girls really just doesn't.

Assuming the Nolan Batman films weren't focus tested (not a big leap), Green Lantern wouldn't even have to be that good to be better then any other latter day DC-adaptation that isn't Batman.  What's the competition, The Losers, Catwomen, Superman Daddy Issues?

Wall E - wow, what a shame I haven't seen this until now.  Undoubtedly my favourite Pixar film after Monsters Inc.  When he puts the spork between the spoons and forks - :lol.

Avatar - I hadn't seen it yet so someone took pity and lent me the DVD.  Meh.

Shallow Hal - I was expecting an boring rubbish comedy, I got a quite endearing rom com.  OK, it's no Definitely, Maybe but it was still pretty good.

Devil Wears Prada - seen it before, still kicks ass.  :bow Meryl Streep :bow2

Let The Right One In - the original one.  Pretty damn awesome all round and the special effects were really sweet too.

Primer - I've been wanting to see this for a long time and it certainly didn't disappoint.  While I didn't catch the story in full the first time around, I managed to get the gist of things enough to keep it intriguing. I can see why people are hanging out to see Shane Carruthers to do something else.

Yeah, I love Wall-E.  Even if i don't feel like watching the whole thing, I can usually pop in the blu ray and watch the first half and be completely entertained.  As a whole i think it's great, but i don't know anyone who'd disagree that the first half is the superior half of the movie.

I dunno, I don't feel that divide between the two halves of the movie like many people seem to. When I came back from that movie and read impressions outlining that, I only raised an eyebrow.

I enjoyed the entire film, start to finish.

Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy to star in Nick Cave and John Hillcoat's "The Wettest Cunty in the World".  :teehee

The hot young acting pair will team up to make "The Wettest County in the World," a Prohibtion-era dramatic thriller from director John Hillcoat ("The Road"), according to two people familiar with the film.

LaBeouf, who had previously been mentioned in conjunction with the project, and Hardy, who hadn't, will both be taking a turn to period pieces. LaBeouf did star in the golf movie "The Greatest Game in the World" but is of course best known for action movies and thrillers.

Hardy, meanwhile, was in adaptations such as "Wuthering Heights" and "Black Hawk Down" but is best known for his role as the agent Eames in "Inception" this summer, and he has an as yet unrevealed part in "The Dark Knight Rises." (He's also currently shooting the Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy "This Means War.")

Nick Cave wrote the screenplay for "County" (speaking of teen pinups, albeit from another era). The film is based on a novel from Matt Bondurant about a family of Prohibition-era bootleggers, and crimes committed by and against them. The movie, an independently financed project that's being produced by the producers of "Jarhead" and "Girl, Interrupted," aims to begin shooting in the spring.

which "...in the World" project will LaBeouf sign on to next?

Speaking of movies that take unexpected turns I saw Adaptation a while back.  I'm actually not a big Nicholas Cage fan but he was amazing in this.  The interactions between he and his brother were brilliantly done from both a technical and acting standpoint.

Oh, and :bow Meryl Streep :bow2.  Obviously.

The new banner reminded me I also saw Hot Fuzz.  It was really nice to see a comedy that is actually funny.

:heart Adaptation

That movie is AMAZING.

Btw about to smoke a bowl and watch Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time. Wish me luck.

I'm eternally grateful to my parents for showing me Rocky Horror when I was 13.

I picked up the RHPS blu-ray, but haven't watched it yet. Need to get around to that one of these days.

I'm kind of bitter I never got to see this when I was a kid. It would've been magical.

Had a B-movie about computers night last weekend with my g/f. We saw Tron (my first time seeing it!) and Hackers. Love the visual style of Tron, and the influence on so many other games and movies is undeniable. Didn't even know Syd Mead and Moebius played a part in the art direction either :bow2 Acting of course was cheese but the retro CG look was interesting. Can't wait to see the sequel!

Hackers was even sillier than I remembered, (especially now that I'm a software engineer) the made-up jargon and horrific acting is nowadays laughable. Liked the movie as a kid (especially since it hit simultaneously around the time I started getting into electronic music), but the only thing that stands up today is the motherfucking soundtrack. It's filled with 90's EDM goodness... Leftfield, Prodigy, Underworld, Orbital.

The only good thing about Hackers is that if you pause it at just the right moment you can kind of see a young Angelina Jolie topless.
