I re-watched Spanglish with the wife, having seen it on a flight away from my family a few years back.

Despite being a two-hanky chick flick, this movie has something for every man: Paz Vega for normal guys, Shelbie Bruce for Fistfulofmetal, and Tea Leoni for guys who wish they were fucking Mulder's wife. Or someone crazy. Tea Leoni is hot, but you don't get to be that fit without some serious mental baggage or Israeli trainers.

The film handles cultural differences deftly, if a little heavy-handedly. There are some moments of exceptional dialog in a sea of competent and believable lines, all rendered well by the cast. Looking at James L. Brooks' filmography, it's not hard to see why I liked the movie; he's a constant mid-range winner. All last night I was watching this, though, I mistakenly remembered it as being an Albert Brooks film. Oops.

I thought this was one of the most contrived films I'd ever seen.

And god, the ending. "I'm going to take you out of a fantastic private academy and put you in the shitheap public school system so that you don't forget your heritage." WTF? The daughter seemed to come out okay, since she's applying to some Ivy League school, but she could have just as easily gotten fucked over by that move.

I think the point is that, just by being in that environment, her daughter was being changed into something the mother didn't want. She didn't want her daughter to be defined that way, but she gave the daughter a choice. She could have chosen to leave, even live with that family, and continue going to her school, if she was willing to become someone very different from her mother.

Escape from New York.

80's vibe is good and I got laugh from Snake's gadgets, as well as Snake himself. Music was nice, movie itself is not so good.

Thank you

you're crazy, PD and lager!

Biz: yeah, after watching the 2nd one again yesterday there's actually a lot more that doesn't make sense.  I look at both the 2nd and 3rd as kind of standalone though and from a pure theater experience.  Seeing it at midnight with a packed audience a few days before it actually comes out is fun as hell.  That's how I've seen all 3 so far.

The movie just isn't so smart Mupepe.

It's not shot very well, there are obvious problems with the things being done, like supposedly the bridge is mined, but there are almost no mines on it. Anyhoo why is the bridge even there if it ends in a wall?  :lol Why not just blow it up? Etc. There really isn't that much action, or hardly any good action at all.

Look I know it's prob some nostalgy trip if you saw it as a kid, I mean if I saw this as a 8 year old it would be total bad ass shit. Not now.

Yeah, I agree. It's not a great movie or anything, it's just a really fun movie to watch. And Kurt Russel nails his role so perfectly.

I don't think anyone would argue that Escape from New York is a good movie on any objective terms.  It's an appealing combination of a few fun characters, a particular gritty atmosphere that couldn't come from any other era, one of Carpenter's really strange synth-based soundtracks and a boatload of camp.

In a lot of ways, it's very similar to most of Carpenter's other stuff from around the same time; it just doesn't come together quite as well.

Paranormal Activity 3

Loved the first one, liked the second one, didn't really care for this one.  The scares seemed stale and it wasn't even as brutal as the second one.  80s video was blurry.  Nice to get a little backstory, unfortunately it didn't make any sense.

If Katie's mom and her boyfriend were killed, how was that explained to them?  Why would their grandmother keep tapes of her committing terrible crimes?
[close]

It just didn't work for me.  Oh well, it was a good series while it lasted and I'm still a fan of the found footage genre.

:( I loved the first and found the second unbelievably contrived and plain bad.  I was hoping just maybe 3 was a return to form with the involvement of the original writer/director.

meh, Aliens were never the problems with the Crystal Skull, and made sense for a movie made ~1950 with roswell having happened and shit, with Soviets in place of Nazis, lots to mine there. Nothing wrong with putting modern mythology alongside ancient mythology, it's not like Indiana Jones was all about realism and historical accuracy.

The problem was the writing, acting and directing - everything was just off.

The directing was so odd; at times it was nice (like the opening scene), but nearly every action scene seemed like it was ripped straight from POTC. Especially the "sword fighting while standing on cars" shit

Yeah, I didn't really have a problem with the aliens either. I mean, the first movie had the Ark of the Covenant, the second had some magic stones, and the third had the Holy Grail. Ancient aliens isn't exactly a huge step from that.

I haven't checked that out yet, but I'm not really confident.  He's just a fundamentally broken character.  He's so bad that even when they obliterate everything he is and start from scratch, the name and few common elements alone are enough to turf him.

But man does he ever sell toys.

Rick Remender is a talented dude - it's worth your time. God knows I had zero interest 'til I heard that it was Remender/Tony Moore working on it. If you've read Fear Agent, you'll know that's a recipe for awesome.

Went with The Devil's Backbone.  Was good, though not really a horror film so only slightly Halloween appropriate.  More like a regular film that just happened to have ghosts.
