I never bothered to read up on what Carruth had been working on since Primer until now...

Quote from: A Topiary
The script begins with a head-scratching thirty minute prologue involving Acre Stowe, a municipal worker of an undisclosed city in the 1980s …  investigating strange starbursts he sees in the sky and eventually meets up with a group of people who are also researching this phenomenon and its consequences, amongst other scientific projects ranging in subject from thermochemistry to archaeology. The main story … revolves around ten boys aged seven to eleven living in a small rural town (Carruth is ambiguous in both location and time here) and takes up the remaining two hours of the film. The boys are in possession of a mysterious black box called a “Maker,” which in turn creates mysterious white discs called “funnels.” The group of kids are at once puzzled and fascinated by the nature of the box, and eventually manipulate the discs into other peculiarly named artifacts (petals, arcs, fronds, etc.). Their creations and constructions lead up to their manufacturing of seemingly sentient quasi-mechanical beings dubbed “Choruses.” Almost as if ‘Topiary’ were an abstract arthouse take on Pokémon, you can imagine the competition and troubles the beings create amongst the children.

Huh. Sounds like it could easily veer into disturbing territory like Naru Taru.

What is Naru Taru? I just read up on the primer forums and wow what the fuck. And that graph is insane.

I read some more on A Topiary. Doesn't sound like goes in the disturbing route of Narutaru, but it could be interesting. Sounds like a big budget is necessary to pull it off.

Watched a strange little film last night.  Strigoi is a Britsh film filmed in Romania starring Eastern European actors speaking English.

A Strigoi is a kind of vampire.  A dead person who has been wronged returned to life to take revenge.  In this black comedy it's actually used a a kind of metaphor for post-Soviet reconstruction.  The people of a village kill an ex-communist  in an attempt to reclaim their farmland for themselves.  The ex-communist had positioned himself to buy all of the land when the communists fell, as he was the only one who could afford to buy it back from the government.  This is something that caused much resentment among the populace ("One day we were working on our farm, the next day we had the same horses, the same land, but it was no longer ours.")  The issue is when he comes back to life.

This is not really a horror film, it's more in line with American Werewolf in London, in that horrific things happen but the tone is that it's one of dark wonder rather than terror.

This is a unique little film and I really enjoyed it.

Wtf mate?  Anime scares me :(

Either way, his new movie sounds intriguing.  I'm definitely interested in whatever he makes.  Even if Primer is confusing as hell and in some respects completely unclear, it's pretty awesome.  There was definitely an extremely creative mind at work behind it.

That clip of Narutaru is pretty tame compared to the manga version and stuff later on in the series.  It's borderline porn manga and the creepy kind of violence/gore/porn at that.

I decided to break the routine of being tired after work and just going home and internetting/gaming/watching tv all night by going down to the local hang out spot in town and seeing Shame.  I figured it had my waifu (Carry Mulligan) and my hubby (Fassbender) and was about a guy who had problems interacting with women (relatable) because he's a sex addict (not relatable).  But man, the movie was SUCH a downer.  It was an interesting character piece and I'd just barely recommend it (has lots of Fassbender cock swinging around if you like that kind of stuff and Mulligan fully nude as well; both do not shave down below :O ) but it's really self-indulgent and some of the scenes go on and on and on.  It does a good job at making you feel what Fassbender's character is feeling, when he's uncomfortable YOU ARE as well.  It went to some interesting places and the ending was alright.  Mulligan is suuuuuuper cute, has been every since An Education (her face looks exactly like girl I had a semi-thing with), but the movie just makes you feel uncomfortable and feel bad the whole time :(

thumbs barely up.

Also, can anyone think of any films similar to Contact in terms of themes, topic;etc? I love that film so much and have been obsessed with it in recent days.

1911 - Pure Chinese propaganda, but still really well done and quite exciting.  Hilarious post script about "while this broke up the Qin dynasty it wasn't until the communist revolution that China was truly free."

The Ides of March - Pretty good.  Would watch a TV series about Paul Giamatti's character as kind of an Anti-West Wing.

Well I'm glad I didn't watch that Innkeepers trailer before I saw the film or I might've been let down a bit. The film has a very different feel than that trailer lets on (and it quite frankly shows too much). Ti West seems to be channeling a lighter horror side with this film. Where The Roost was a tribute to B-horror pulp, Trigger Man was his drive-in "hunter becomes the hunted" thriller, and House of the Devil was his full on early 80s tribute, this seemed to be his mix of William Castle and Spielberg's Poltergeist.

Like his other films this one definitely has an old fashion "slow burn" to its pacing, but unlike his others once it finally crescendos it just ends too quickly. I honestly found the ending to be very lacking, like it could've used an extra 10 minutes. I still liked it though. I thought the characters were fun, the score and cinematography were great, and West is still showing great skill as a horror director. Looking forward to seeing what he does with his V/H/S short.
