Liam Neeson should win Dudebro of the Year. When he held that guy that was bleeding to death until he died, I knew I was watching a true bro.

Got pumped up for this yesterday by watching Ti West's Trigger Man for the first time. Like the rest of his films it's a slow burn, but once it gets going it becomes intense as hell.

that single take scene at the end where the dude walks down the alley was real good. plus i liked that they adhered to the correct number of shots in the rifle. enjoyed it definitely.

Midnight in Paris

I really liked this.  Very charming movie.

edit:  I'm slowly realizing that it is basically Night at the Museum for older people.  That sounded dumb.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Ms. Rapace was stellar. Perfect. Movie itself went on a little long. Climax was pretty insane and gratifying. I felt a bit ill when seeing the killer's mementos.

hmmm yea I dunno.  If it's actually satirizing the angry white male theme then it could be interesting.  My suspicion though is that it's probably of a kind with other conservative films like Falling Down, which is mostly about decrying what a bunch of degenerates everyone is besides the angry white male protagonist*.  To be a good film it's going to have to be more than just a pity party for us disenfranchised white dudez.

*This could still be true even if it features an enabling female sidekick and seems to be trying to identify with liberals (why is fox news so evil?).

Will it be a Planet of the Apes remake? How will they explain the humans coming from a space ship if all humans are wiped out by the disease crafted in Rise?

What they said about the second movie sounds more like showing Caesar starting to build ape society while dealing with the humans who are immune from the disease.

The astronauts are probably being saved for the third movie. They showed news footage of the astronauts entering the Mars atmosphere, and then there was a newspaper that said they were feared lost.

The Expendables wasn't the landmark kick-ass, end all and be all of action films that I was hoping it would be, but at least it provided a shot in the arm if not to the flagging action blockbuster, then to the careers of its stars.  Statham needed a hit and got one, Stallone got another shot at a big studio action film (Bullet to the Head, coming soon), Jet Li got a large check and hoofed it back to China to make better movies there, but what did perpetually lower-tier star Dolph Lundgren get?

He got In the Name of the King: Two Worlds, Uwe Boll's follow up to his oddly high profile In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.  Only this time he doesn't have the resources to hire Ray Lliota as an evil wizard and instead must settle on human photoshop victim Natassia Malthe as its best camp element.  But surely there must be some of Boll's trademark enthusiastic imcompetence, right?  Besides a brief shot of the antagionist clearly adjusting his wig, and some very shoddy CGI effects, there's very little about this film that's any fun on purpose or otherwise.  It looks every bit of the cheap, crappy film it is, filled with listless performances from no doubt low paid Canadian actors who aren't enjoying slogging around in the clearly very bad weather they were forced to endure to fulfill some shitty auter's vision.

How good is it, its about as good as you'd expect an Uwe Boll film to be.
1/5

If every big studio horror film is going to be either a remake or sequel, they might as well be as good as Fright Night, which is the rare remake that doesn't embarrass itself by offering no reason for its existence.  Here, we've got some very fun performances from Colin Farrell and David Tennent, a light touch and some cool vampire releated death.  Its about as good as "fun horror" gets nowadays, with tastefully graphic violence, clever dialog, and a plot that's just different enough from the previous film to qualify as sorta-original.

Its not great by any means, but it is a whole bunch of fun, and as poor Dolph Lundren just showed us, a little extra effort can go a long way.
3.5/5

I watched Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

I've never seen the original and I've never read the book but I found it damn entertaining.  The style was great but it was a bit of a letdown.  But I probably had my hopes too high to begin with.  It's a good movie, but I was pretty much just left not liking the way it ended.  Oh well

When you get down to it, the central mystery isn't really all that great. Still a good movie overall, though.

I thought the idea of a group of family members who hate each other but are tied together for reasons of wealth was well-handled. The climax with the killer was good, but everything after felt like it didn't really know when to call it a day. It was like watching a touchdown get scored, and then the guy just kept running, past the end zone, off the field, through the locker rooms, and into the parking lot.

I'm not saying it was handled well, but...there's not much there that a dozen other mystery writers [or more] haven't done ten times already.

I think it was handled well, but there was just nothing amazing about it.  It felt like an average story with great production.  And yeah, the movie goes on for what, like 30 or 40 minutes after the climax?  By the time it ended I may as well have forgotten that I liked it.  It felt like it was clearly trying to create character development for the sequel but with no real relevance to the movie I already watched.  Bah.

Watched this last night and yeah, pretty decent film.  I liked the first half that focused on Ceaser's origin story.  The 2nd half with MONKEY V HUMAN was kind of lol action.  The ending just kind of ...ended.  Was very setup for a sequel and has my interest in the next one.

The CG was amazing though.  Hope it wins an oscar for tech award.

to do:

extras suck.  supposedly a second release will be later this year with more.  will wait for that.

The Girl Who Played with Fire. This is the Episode I treatment; everything which seemed neat and random in the first movie is tied together needlessly and improbably in the sequel. Felt like a cash-in, though Noomi Rapace still owns every scene she's in, and it's even fun to watch her unpack an entire house worth of Ikea into her new digs. The only thing I liked about it was the near-total separation of the two lead characters, keeping their interaction entirely indirect.

Should I bother with the last one, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest?

Not going to happen.  Wasn't nominated for oscars, so won't get any attention and be a big enough seller to get a better edition down the line.  Movie only did ok and the director is has very little say in hollywood.

Like Mr. Gundam, I never watch extras anymore, so as long as the video and audio are good I'm fine with a release.

I lent my Drive BD to my brother since he missed it in theaters.  He thought it was entertaining but didn't think it was oscar nom quality in anything other than cinematography.  I had to tell him why it was the best directed film of 2011 and maybe best picture (haven't seen the artist) but I don't think he bought it.

:lol  I fucking loved that movie.  Even if you hated the ending, there was at least a ton of good humor in the movie.

Real Steel

I want a fighting robot.  That's about all I can say.  The story was well done, but those kinds of stories bore the shit out of me anyways.  The kid is annoying and obnoxious as fuck.  There's also a lot of Beiber style dancing going on in this movie.  No no no no no no no.  Not enough fighting for a 2 hour movie.  But if Angels in the Outfield type stories are your thing then you'll like this movie.  It's just not my cup of tea.

Where was the humour in Serious Man? It was one of those awful comedies where EVERY character is an annoying asshole. I only watched 2/3rds of it. Is there any payoff at the end? I want the main guy to punch his fucking son and wife in the fucking face.

I used to like Coen Bros movies when I was a naive teenager, but now I know better. My taste in music and movies has evolved a lot. These days I generally can't be fucked with any film that isn't an action movie or family movie.

Happy Happy.  I was sold a dark comedy but it's really a very frank drama about relationships and how they're hard to hold together if not everyone is honest about what they want.  It IS funny, we laughed a lot, but I think it's more accurately described as a dramady.  There is a a hell of a lot of wilde homo subtext (and ur-text!) so it would probably be well beloved by the bore.  Some really beautiful photography as well.

Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie

I think the only thing that could cleanse my palette following this is a warm Shrim bath.
