sad that Wally Pfister won't be shooting this one  :'(

oh wait he's directing his own sci-fi movie, produced by Nolan.  We win even if we lose!

A movie about time travel and alternate dimensions (especially if it's structured around this) would seem to be right in Nolan's wheelhouse.

Yep.  can't wait for all the exposition.  Seriously, no sarcasm.  I usually find Nolan's spoken description of the universe more compelling than the climax of the movie.

Saw Jack Reacher after Django last week. It's not an action movie so I don't know why they advertised it as one. It also felt and looked like it was filmed in the early 90s. Really odd movie.

I always smirk when I read the name Jack Reacher. So porn star.

oh I watched some stuff last night.

Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me: I'd watched the TV series through several times but had never seen the film for some reason. I really enjoyed it but you'd have to have seen the show to understand it all. So as a standalone film = probably poop, as an accompaniment to the show = very good.

The Julee Cruise song was gorgeous as always:

El Mariachi: excellent excellent film. A few pacing issues but super impressive given it's shoestring budget. A landmark film in a lot of ways. The badguy was awesome:

best facial acting I'd seen in a long time.

I like Desperado too but Once Upon a Time in Mexico was kinda wack iirc.

I saw Zero Dark Thirty last night.  Engaging fucking movie.  The investigation portion of the movie is done very well and is actually way better than the action climax.  One thing is that you can definitely tell Bigelow believes in torture methods.  I'm kinda surprised she got snubbed for best director especially considering how this movie is way better than The Hurt Locker.  I can see some people having issues with the first half if they aren't already familiar with the assumptions of bin Laden's persona/whereabouts/etc in the early 00's.  The movie kinda assumes you were old enough to follow it all on the news and while I guess the target audience would be aware of all of it I believe it makes it a weaker movie in the end.  But if you're familiar with it then the movie is a fantastic thriller/mystery.

Cloud Atlas

I read the book a few months ago. I really liked the book. I found the writing to be entirely engaging and I felt the themes that ran through each story were strong. However I always had the feeling I didn't get the point. I didn't understand what the overall connection was. Maybe I was thinking about it too literally.

The movie, for me, was a justified product because it allowed me to understand exactly how each story is connected to each other in a more tangible way. Well... maybe tangible is the wrong way to describe it because it's not tangible in a lot of cases.

I really enjoyed how the movie intercut the various stories together and connected key moments to each other. Some of the connections were a little weak and I don't know if they were meant to be viewed as mirrored events between the stories but it worked for me.

The Wachowski bros did a pretty damned good job of adapting this to the film. The book is such a dense story that I wouldn't have imagined how it could have been done. They managed to do it and yes, they did drop a lot of elements from the story. Entire side-plots are dropped and the main plot condensed, however it feels in benefit for the medium since they don't have enough time to setup those aspects.

I would be interested in hearing the opinion of someone who watches this and hasn't read the book. While I felt the movie helped me better understand the story, without knowing the basic plot beforehand I can see the movie being incredibly confusing.

Can't believe The Departed hate. There are so many shit movies, but people talk shit about the good ones. Why does that happen?

That was the film that made me a believer in Leo DiCaps.

"You sit there with a mass murderer. A mass murderer. Your heart rate is jacked. And your hand, steady. That's one thing I figured out about myself in prison. My hand does not shake. Ever."

Such a great scene.
Because people love to hate things that others love. The Departed and Catch Me If You Can made me DiCaprio believer.

Peoe hate successful things to a point where they have to take an extremist position. The Departed got universal praise, made tons of money, won awards...so naturally a minority of dirty haters exist to act like they know what's really good

Same with Forrest Gump haters. Dirty, dirty people

Zero Dark Thirty

a really well made spy thriller. it's brought down by how much time goes by in the film which doesnt lend enough time to building Maya's character enough. I see the Zodiac comparisons as well.

Zero Dark Thirty was alright if a little corny in places.

I love how they're selling the film in ad's though. Mia looks like some random female. Just lots of soldier men action shots. Hilarious.

Saw Argo last night. Enjoyable stuff, if only to see all the great actors in small roles.

Though why did it have to do that terrible these people really existed thing in the end credits with the passports?

i saw it last night, and it didn't do much for me. i didn't care about chastain's character even though she gave a great performance, and i didn't care for any of the other characters either. the only thing it had going for it, i thought, was the raid; actually, that's the thing that you're waiting for when watching it, anyway.

did anyone else feel that the torture at the beginning of the film had more impact than any of the scenes in django unchained? i thought django was pretty tame; i'm not exactly sure why all the cast members keep saying "i just thought.. FUCK, are we really doing this? :o"

There's a good movie in here somewhere with some editing.  Everything having to do with the crash and the investigation is fantastic.  Insights into his issues are pretty great too, but they're bogged down by poor editing and writing choices that include a lot of boring, unnecessary shit.  It could have been a damn good 1.5 hr film.  Instead it's a slow draggin, alright 2.25 hr film.

Silver Lining Playbook
Pretty good movie.  It's funny as hell and everyone brings their A game.  And Jennifer Lawrence is crazy hot when she's crazy

End of Watch
Pretty entertaining.  Really funny moments.  Ultimately forgettable and just a nice way to waste 2 hours.

Dredd - I kind of wished I'd seen this in 3D.  Entertaining, but the plot is a bit nonsensical.  Does every cop film have to have crooked cops in it?

Quote

Back in November, the Los Angeles Times reported that Man of Steel and 300 director Zack Snyder said he had no interest in directing the hotly anticipated seventh Star Wars film. But Vulture has learned that while this may be specifically true — he won’t be doing Episode VII — it was a bit of misdirection: He is in fact developing a Star Wars project for Lucasfilm that is set within the series’ galaxy, though parallel to the next trilogy. It will be an as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers. (Go ahead, say it — you know you want to: “ … an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.” Felt good, didn’t it?)

It’s not clear just where Snyder’s untitled Jedi film would fall within the Star Wars chronology, but one insider expects it will not be considered part of the “numbered” episodes, but rather a stand-alone film set sometime post–Episode VI events, meaning the next phase of the franchise development is much broader than previously thought. For those unfamiliar, Kurosawa’s influential Seven Samurai (The Magnificent Seven was the American remake) tells the tale of a small agrarian town in seventeenth-century Japan that’s routinely pillaged by bandits. Fed up with the annual shakedown, its farmers retain the services of seven masterless samurai to defend their harvest. George Lucas has cited the classic as one of his favorites, telling the Telegraph in 2005 that “it’s a brilliant, brilliant film, and every time I see it I can't believe the magic mixture of a great story and great acting and humour and action and suspense — wonderful cinema. The art of moving pictures is on every frame of this movie.”

In late October of last year, when Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced the acquisition of Lucasfilm, he’d stated that after Episode VII, “our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.” Our sources also say that Snyder’s would start production after Disney starts on its planned 2015 release of Star Wars: Episode VII, and while no director has yet been set for Episode VII, clearly things are taking shape at Lucasfilm. (A spokesperson for Lucasfilm declined comment.)

In the meantime, we are left to ponder the obvious geek questions: Do Snyder’s Jedi carry just a single lightsaber or a long one and a short one, like samurai do? Oh God, why do you torture us so!?
