What other classic films could use a Star Wars retelling? I'm down for a To Kill a Mockingbird with wookies instead of black people

it can be the first part of star wars' eighth trilogy.  driving miss daisey will be the basis for part two, aka the darkest entry in the trilogy.  it ends with the uplifting guess who's coming to dinner.

Well, Episode 3 was already Casablanca, right?

Episode 4 was The Hidden Fortress.

Yes, I seem to recall that R2D2 and C3PO are modeled after the two peasants who get caught in the wake of the happenings, too.

I honestly thought The Last Stand looked shitty, but when I learned who the director is I thought I'd at least keep an open mind. Genuinely interested in seeing it's reaction.

Rented John Dies at the End through iTunes. It may or may not appear on video in Japan in a year or four. When it does, it will likely enjoy cult status.

I liked it a lot. It falters a bit toward the end, but then so did the book. The effects were really uneven, but I appreciated staying with latex creatures, even though they did a lot of greenscreen sets. The tone of the movie nicely keeps that whole WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING feeling from start to finish. The feeling of dread and overarching doom are not quite present enough, though the few scenes where the reality of the situation is being debated are taut and engaging.

It's going to tank if it hasn't already, but it deserves praise in the same way that Bubba Ho Tep and Big Trouble in Little China do. It takes chances and tries interesting stuff. I'll see it again at some point, and it made me want to re-read the book(s).

So, apparently three prominent Korean directors have their first English-language movie out this year:

Joon-ho Bong [Memories of Murder, The Host] - Snowpiercer
Chan-wook Park [Vengeance Trilogy, Thirst, JSA] - Stoker
Jeen-woon Kim [The Quiet Family, A Tale of Two Sisters, I Saw the Devil, The Good The Bad And The Weird] - The Last Stand

Did you read the books? I think it's one of those rare cases where the book supplements the movie viewing, rather than the movie just making everything horrible.

The funny thing about Dredd is that it was actually filmed before The Raid but came out after it.

Dredd was filmed in back in 2010.

yeah, I saw The Last Stand on a Friday 5PM showing and there were about 8 other people in the theater.

I liked it, I didn't love it, but its hard not to get behind a film that gives its best hero moment to Luis Guzman.  Its just an uncomplicated, well done genre film and I'm bummed that there doesn't seem to be a market for that.  Or maybe its just gotten lost in the absolute deluge of R-rated genre films and other movies targeted towards adults that's going on at the present.

and Hyde Park on Hudson was better then I'd thought it be.  There's a predictably great Bill Murray performance anchoring it, but its also funny and charming, and well, just so dang genial.  It tells a minor story, but tells it well, and I'm guessing its rejection for all those shiny awards reserved for very important films is because of its very insubstantial nature.  But that's what makes it fun.

Seven Psychopaths is great. It does what it does really well, and its nice to see Seamus Shamrock fuck around with a bigger budget. I saw In Bruges once, years ago, and this felt equally fresh.

And Sam Roskwells face surgeons should be applauded. He's actually almost handsome now.

Zero Dark Thirty

Really liked it!  Had great pacing & tension.  The script was intelligent and the actors and actresses all brought their A game.  Probably the best movie of this type I've seen since Black Hawk Down.  Main girl is going to win the oscar even though I don't think she was that great.  But she did a good job and cried so she'll get it.

yeah I saw SLP a few days ago because I completely overlooked it when it came out.  The movie has sold me on Lawrence.  She looked hot as hell in it and gave a great performance.  My thread now looks stupid.

Also De Niro was really fucking good in that movie.  I'd like for him to win an oscar but Waltz probably already has that locked down.

The main problem with Thunderdome, I think, was that George Miller didn't actually want to go ahead with it after Byron Kennedy died early in preproduction, though he did stay on to direct the action scenes.

The Last Stand

This movie was depressingly bad.  Fuck, RAMBO IV was better than this.  Last Stand has some ups, and the last 20-30 mins of the film are fun enough, but the first 3/4ths of the film just suck and the script is horrendous.  I get this feeling that sometimes when foreign directors come over to make their first American films, the language barrier stops them from seeing how fucking awful the scripts are.  It's just really really bad and misses every opportunity to be a clever, campy throwback Arnold script.  On top of that the acting is SO BAD.  Just terrible delivery of the lines left and right.

Action direction was decent, but everything was just so bad it was :(  I looooooove me some Arnold, so this was pretty sad.  Hope his other films in production are better.

I liked star trek and mission impossible 3.  Not so much Super 8, but it wasn't bad.  A nice safe pick!

Everyone else in the running will get a chance to direct Episodes 8 to 63 (and Episodes 0 to -16).

Wonder who'll take over Star Trek now.  I recently read something that said Abrams was the one who didn't want a new Star Trek TV series.  Or maybe he'll stay on producer over there and whateverhwatejfo mo money mo problems

seriously, I want the guy who directed Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to do the next Star Trek movie.  His name is Tomas Alfredson; I just looked that up.  Didn't know he directed Let the Right One In, which was great as well.  Not only would it be perfect for Star Trek, the jump from Dark Knight in space to the most boring movie ever would be amazing for the audience reaction.  An entire movie of people sitting around, shifting eyes, and drinking tea while discussing space politics.
