Avatar is a good film and I still don't understand nerd hate for That film. You're going going to have to do a lot better than "it's generic" to convince me considering Cameron crafted his own world, language, and interesting mythos into this film then you go jack off over the next generic looking video game.

I'm not really trolling. I have maintained this position since the films release. I thoroughly enjoyed Avatar and.thought it was.a.great experience for what is was - that's the key here. Everyone seems to be expecting a.great story from the guy that brought us True Lies, Terminator 2, and a film with a woman kicking an aliens ass in A tractor mech. I felt it was standard Cameron and I can understand not liking it, but the internet uproar over it acting like it is the worst film of all time? That is befuddling to my brain.

I also think That the world of Avatar is interesting. I think it'd make a wicked video game and I've wanted a cartoon spin off since release. Look up my posts. Shut the fuck up. Suck my tits.

You're not reading my posts, I said as a spectacle was great. I loved that I got to see it the way it was meant to be seen when it first came out, great experience but I'm not going back to it. And anyone claiming its anything more than an average movie elevated by tech is an idiot too.

Inception is amazing, while I've met real life avatar haters I've never met anyone in real life who downright hated Inception. At most some just don't care about it.

My biggest point being I dislike it when people use "generic" as a talking point for a critique towards Avatar when James Cameron's entire output is generic.

Let's look at it:

Aliens - a space marine troop arrives at a planet showing signs of alien life as a colony is torn asunder. They all fall, one by one, as they face the mother alien to finally rid the galaxy of their species once and for all.

Pretty standard shit. But guess what, it looked good and it had awesome action. Classic.

Terminator 2 - two guys from the future - kind of a retread of the original Terminator film, already. Hmm. One is an unstoppable monster that they just can never beat. Sci-fi thriller genre trope? Check. They find the means to stop the destruction of the world through one man. Save the world from demolition trope? Check. A self sacrifice to protect the main character. Check. I rest my case. T2 is generic as all hell, even in 1992, that film was predictable.

Pretty standard shit. But guess what, it looked AMAZING and it had awesome action. Classic.

True Lies - A government agent's wife finds out he's a spy, gets caught up in the mix. Shenanigans ensue. This film has generic written all over it.

Pretty standard shit. But guess what, it looked good and it had awesome action. Classic.

Titanic - A love story blossoms aboard one of the largest tragedies and signal for the death of aristocratici lifestyle in the early 20th century. Typical love story. Let's mix it up with actual historical movie and cash in?!

Pretty standard shit. But guess what, it looked good and it got guys poon that night because their girlfriends cried. Classic.

Avatar - A guy with the loss of his legs through being paralyzed finds a new life in the form of an alien race as he's absorbed into their culture, embraces it, falls in love with it, and turns on his old bosses and own species.

Pretty standard shit. But guess what, it looked AWESOME and it had awesome action. Billed generic.

I'd also like to make the note of saying that unlike True Lies, Aliens, and Terminator 2, Cameron built this world up from through an insane process of pre-production that includes language, lore, myths, and culture. He created an entirely new world in Avatar. How often does Hollywood do this? Almost never. I just can't take anyone seriously who says Avatar is generic but worships Aliens. I just can't, as much as I love Aliens.

I'm not an Avatar hater, but it's not so much that it was generic (if you get reductive you can make any movie sound generic) but that it's telling a particular morality tale that has been well run into the ground recently.

I can understand that and that's a fair critique. Admittedly, I am a sucker for that type of story. Last Samurai, Dances with Wolves, fucking Ferngully...I'm big on that type of story and I don't know why. It's just interesting. It helps that the world is FUCKING COOL and they have dinosaurs, mechs, and flying dragons and mountains suspended in the air and crap. Shit would be a dope ass video game, I tell ya.

Aliens wasn't generic at the time, it seems so now because it has been relentlessly ripped off. Including by Avatar. Terminator 1 was also not generic, though iirc he stole that story. Abyss was also unique.

Since that time Cameron has been boring though ya

Cameron claimed Terminator came to him in a dream, and then Harlan Ellison flipped the fuck out because it ripped off an Outer Limits story he did called "Soldier" and Cameron had to give him credit when the movie was released on home video. Orion also paid him a ton of money to shut up too.

I'm no Raimi fan at all but think he was probably a better fit. Hopefully he's directing because he wants to and not just because money

He has great concepts but his execution is flawed to say the least. His movies are good but are never great. He's he kind of guy who if he improves later on his movies will be some awesome shit.

Wut? that's opposite of being right. Source Code is a shit concept executed wonderfully.

Well he is not the kind of director that you go a offer a bucket of movie to make your 100+ million dollar movie.

If Legendary choose him it must be for a reason, there are cheaper and more commercial directors out there.

allegedly Duncan Jones was on the short list to directing that new Superman  There are conflicting reports about what happened. One stated that he was uncomfortable directing such a large movie, and another said he had a grander vision and WB didn't want to wait that long, so Snyder was chosen.  I dunno.  Either way, he's about the only interesting part of this 'warcraft' movie.

Goyers interview in the new Empire where he said he wrote it like it wasn't a comic book but instead realistic.

There's more to it than that, ignoring how vague 'realistic' means for a film about a guy flying around in a onesie.  It was compared to ET or the day the earth stood, and how Superman is mankind's first contact with extraterrestrials, and the alien qualities of the character.

I took that to mean something like, well, in Thor, you have all these aliens battling it out in some town and it ends with "oh, alien guy, join our superhero team."  Superman is "FUCK it's a space monster! call the government and experiment on this dude!" and Ma and Pa Kent want to stop people from finding out for that reason, and Clark is all depressed and shit because he knows he can help people but exposing himself might be worse.  Wait, so it's like Ang Lee's Hulk...fu

I dunno.  The trailers did nothing for me but I'm not unhappy about what they're doing with it.  I agree that it's a bit sad that if they'll continue with this direction we won't see the 'out there' aspects of Superman.  And since DC will go forward with Justice League, because because, Darkseid or Mongul will be saved for those.  Doomsday could go either way, like, Superman dies in Justice League 3 and is resurrected in Superman 5.  What we'll end up with is Lex + Metallo + Parasite, maybe Braniac, and then they'll reboot it.

As much as I like to shit on Frank Miller for his recent work, this quote is on point:

Quote from: Frank Miller
People are attempting to bring a superficial reality to superheroes which is rather stupid. They work best as the flamboyant fantasies they are. I mean, these are characters that are broad and big. I don't need to see sweat patches under Superman's arms. I want to see him fly.

And that's exactly why Avengers made a shitload of money. But DC/Warner is blind to that and keep sucking off Nolan to copy the Batman movies.
