Actually, you can probably blame J.R.R. Tolkien for trilogies. What a loser.

Harry Knowles is full of shit as always:
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/02/06/star-wars-spin-offs-young-han-solo-movie-boba-fett/

Not a Yoda movie. A Young Han Solo movie set before Episode IV and a Boba Fett movie set during the Original Trilogy.

Actually, you can't blame him either.  He wrote The Lord of The Rings as one volume/story.  It was the publisher who insisted it be broken up into three separate books, IIRC.

one of the stand-alone star wars movies will be about young Han Solo set between the prequels and original trilogy.  the other follows Boba Fett between episodes 4 and 5.

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=99975#lToEGQswyBTJ08PE.99

the Han Solo movie will probably have young Lando, young Chewbacca, young Greedo, young Jabba, and the millennium falcon.  he either gets the ship at the end of the movie, or they stretch it into the Young Solo Trilogy and tease it.  Han tells Lando, "one of these days I'll get your ship."  Lando's like "you'll have to shoot me first!."  Han looks at the camera, "you know me--I always shoot first!"  Then he winks at Greedo, who happens to be standing there.

Just imagine the reverance that'd be held for The Matrix if they had stopped at the first.

Though they still probably would've made another by now even if they'd initially stopped

Eh, it's good that they made Matrix sequels. The Matrix is just a series of copies of other's ideas introduced to new audiences. That they went so off the rails after that tells me all I need to know about the makers.

I watched it with expectations of zero fun, it's not a patch on 3, and wtf at the way they just stopped watching the recorded footage. Idiot yanks.

Shame about The Master, I was kindof looking forward to catching that.

Saw Children Underground, a documentary about Romanian kids who are homeless once communism collapses.  There is an excess amount of children because the dictator banned contraception and abortions to create a large work force.  Mostly the film is about 10 year olds huffing paint in plastic bags and trying to find ways to scrape enough money together to survive the next day.  The conclusion is pretty depressing and the "where are they now" is even more depressing.  Worth the watch to me because I had a friend who spent some years growing up in a Bulgarian orphanage and also I like communist history.

Argo was indeed great :bow

I watched Skyfall and I dunno it was just a generic action movie to me, nothing interesting ever really happens and as with all three recent films I just don't get that James Bond movie feel from them. The chick that died was hot though, and the sniping from opposite building bit was nice. Loved the villain but they could have done much more with him.

The man with the Iron Fist - Movie I felt was poo. Also at this point I'm convinced Quentin Tarantino just puts black people in his movies so he can use hip hop tracks

uhhh Tarantino didn't direct The man with the Iron Fist, The RZA did. I heard it was horrible and while I'm a RZA fanboy...I doubt I'll watch it.

Still surprised he was given a relatively big production for his first, and will do a Genghis Khan film later this year.

i'll probably skip it as well

watched some films today

Curse of the Dog God - Japanese mineral miners go scouting for uranium in a remote Japanese village and destroy a shrine by accident and a dog on purpose and things Go Poorly for everyone involved after that.  Good psychedelic nightmare sequences, ok characters, bizarre exorcisms that involve people throwing rice balls with red beans at a storehouse which is the jail of a "possessed woman."  Worth watching, I'd say.

No Blade of Grass - jesus christ this was the most heavy handed environmental movie i think i've ever seen.  basically there's a virus which destroys all grains and as such the world economy collapses.  we follow this group of people out of London into the country as they search for stability.  It's basically your average post apocalyptic travelogue with added rapes and horrible psychedelic flash forwards after ominous portents from the various characters.  horrible bullshit.  The book is supposed to be good but this was just so goddamn bad.

Ebony Ivory and Jade - FUCKING AWESOME 70s exploitation film.  6 girls are kidnapped by Hong Kong radicals and are ransomed for $5 million HKD. The girls are not interested in taking any shit and as such there is a fight every 5 minutes or so.  TOTALLY AWESOME A+

The Moon is Blue - This creeper guy pulls creeper moves in this "romantic" "comedy" directed by Otto Preminger.   Shut it off after 30 minutes.

Robert Downey Jr buys 'Black Mirror' film rights

'Iron Man' actor will produce Hollywood version of 'The Entire History Of You'

Robert Downey Jr has bought the film rights to an episode of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror.

The Iron Man actor will produce the Hollywood version of the sci-fi anthology series' The Entire History Of You, which was written by Peep Show writer Jesse Armstrong. The screenwriter is also on board to pen the big screen adaptation, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The episode centred on a world where people have the ability to replay memories via a brain implant. Original screened on December 11, 2011 the show starred Toby Kebbell as a jealous husband who used the replay "grain" to uncover evidence that his wife was cheating on him.

The film version is slightly different. Set in the near future, a widower uses the technology to reconstruct his relationship with his dead wife and unwittingly uncovers a conspiracy.

While Robert Downey Jr is currently not attached to appear in the film, which is in pre-production with Warner Bros. and Team Downey productions, the actor will oversee the project as a producer.

The second series of Black Mirror began on Channel Four last night (February 11). Titled Be Right Back, the episode was written by Charlie Brooker who pens all three episodes of the new series.

oh for the love of...

two movies i really enjoyed last year are out now on the cheap on blu ray through Amazon

first up is The Thieves, a HK / Korean co production which starts off as Ocean's 11 and ends like Hamlet.  Crazy tonal shift and amazing set pieces made this a really fun then harrowing film as the filmmakers pulled the rug from beneath your feet right as you were getting comfortable.  Very good film and currently $14 on blu ray  or you can appatenly watch it here

then there's the crazy Tai Chi Zero which is the first in a trilogy.  it's a bananas comic book style kung fu film filled with stunt cameos and evil british people and their giant fucking steam tank.  it ain't art, but it's awesome.  it's available for $13.  i've heard the second one is a bit of a let down but i haven't seen it so i can't comment

Psychological thriller and drama done really well. I don't want to delve too deeply into what its about since I think knowing nothing or next to nothing about the scenario will help you get caught up in it but just go into it knowing that its a bit of a slow burn.

Zero Dark Thirty

After reading No Easy Day, I was worried that the movie would try to recreate the initial (and false) story of the raid (where they said Bin Laden took a his wife as a human shield, etc.), but the raid at the end is 100% accurate to how it's described in No Easy Day. Very very awesome. I do wish the movie showed some of the SEAL training, as they built a full-size replica of the Bin Laden compound out of shipping containers and plywood and ran through the raid for weeks leading up to the actual mission.

Before I saw it I was hoping Argo would win Best Picture, but now I'm torn between the two.
