argo - really liked it, but i don't feel i have anything original to add to the conversation so i'll leave it at that

pushover - bog standard film noir. fred macmurray is a cop who is staking out a criminal's woman under the assumption that after his recent escape he'll make a beeline for there to pick up money missing from a bank robbery.  the girl, played by kim novak in her first role, convinces fred that she loves him and they should keep the money.  things go predictably south in a not very interesting way. loved kim novak in it though.  she was able to be manipulative without being shrewish as is common in these films.

the berlin file - a south korean spy film which follows a north korean spy in berlin and his wife as they try to survive the manipulations of another north korean agent. very good action scenes which don't mirror the Bourne series (to my relief) though it sets up a very Bourne sequel.  it was really interesting to see such a sympathetic portrayal of a NK agent and his wife in this film and i realized that if anyone missed "cold war" style spy fiction then this will probably fill in the gap.

Robert Downey Jr buys 'Black Mirror' film rights

'Iron Man' actor will produce Hollywood version of 'The Entire History Of You'

Robert Downey Jr has bought the film rights to an episode of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror.

The Iron Man actor will produce the Hollywood version of the sci-fi anthology series' The Entire History Of You, which was written by Peep Show writer Jesse Armstrong. The screenwriter is also on board to pen the big screen adaptation, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The episode centred on a world where people have the ability to replay memories via a brain implant. Original screened on December 11, 2011 the show starred Toby Kebbell as a jealous husband who used the replay "grain" to uncover evidence that his wife was cheating on him.

The film version is slightly different. Set in the near future, a widower uses the technology to reconstruct his relationship with his dead wife and unwittingly uncovers a conspiracy.

While Robert Downey Jr is currently not attached to appear in the film, which is in pre-production with Warner Bros. and Team Downey productions, the actor will oversee the project as a producer.

The second series of Black Mirror began on Channel Four last night (February 11). Titled Be Right Back, the episode was written by Charlie Brooker who pens all three episodes of the new series.

oh for the love of...
Holy shit. I missed this. What the fuck? Did he just see the tech in the episode and wanted it in a generic conspiracy movie?

Rented two movies from Redbox last night:

The Perks of being a Wallflower.  Had no initial interest in this movie because the whole teenage angst crap is just not me.  Every little indie and goth kid was reading it way back in highschool, and they all thought it made them so original...

The movie was decent though.  I picked it up because I have a thing for Emma Watson.  He American accent wasn't too bad and actually fit her character well.  I was hopeful that I was going to get to see more than just the hands on bra on boobs scene, but alas, no.  Still though, decent movie and I can see why the school-aged kids like the story.

Here Comes the Boom.  A damned good movie.  I didn't have high expectations for it, but Kevin James delivered.  I don't know what that guy did to get in shape for that movie, but he did it right.  Guy looked beast in the end of it.

The storyline, while predictable, was pretty good.  Selma Hayek was sexy as hell in that movie without ever taking a single article of clothing off.  Loved the whole thing from start to finish, and the fight at the end was pretty fucking epic.

I'd argue it's one of the trickier problems of B-level comic book characters turning into a movie franchise.  Like with Cap - Red Skull is done for now, we're doing Winter Soldier next, and presumably big Avengers villains will be saved for the Avengers movies.  So who's next?  Batroc the Leaper?

I guess they can't all be Batman and Spider-Man.

Apparently Crossbones is in Winter Soldier too.

It's going to have too many characters:

Cap
Falcon
Winter Soldier
Black Widow
Crossbones (maybe)

Watched a bunch of Canadian crap today:

Trailer Park Boys: The Movie - Not that great.  The concept doesn't work well as a full feature movie.

Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day - Even worse than the first movie.

Watched HANNA with da wife last night. Two hour movie, started at 11PM, finished at 1AM, were high on adrenaline for another hour. Great movie. Cate Blanchett's accent was a little unsettling, but then again her character is meant to evoke an unsettling reaction. Numerous faerie tale tropes in it, I was very happy.

Yeah, they had a very public spat about it, first made public by Megan Fox. Apparently they are considering this a public make-up:

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning

This is a very surreal, bizarre action movie. In its own way, it takes more inspiration from the likes of Drive and Apocalypse Now than it does your standard brainless action movie. It'd downbeat, it's often deliberate in its pacing [when it's not showing off one of its very slick action scenes], and the violence in the original version eventually added up to an NC-17 rating [the American release snipped away just enough here and there to get an R]. The story is too confusing to really take anything away from on its own merits and lots of the details are left vague, but that tends to serve its surreal nature rather than take away from the movie as a whole.

I read portions of Watchmen all the time. Adaptions have no impact on how I view the source material. They're seperate entities for seperate mediums. The last time an adaption truly pissed me off was Game of Thrones S2, and not because it changed stuff - but because it made changes that led to bad television. I'm fine with changes, just make them good.

Not everything from a novel can work on screen. Like the climax of Watchmen.

I don't see how anyone could think the Watchman movie took anything away from the book. Even if it didn't succeed as a movie, it still was a amazing collection of vignettes that unfortunately just added up to less than the sum of its parts.

Objectively, Watchmen has more than a few good scenes and some great ones. There are some great visuals, many from the book, and IMO the problem is they got the look right but nearly everthing else wrong. The acting is terrible and the delivery of dialogue is worse; it reminds me of the Star Wars prequel where the basic concepts of making a good movie (acting, writing, etc) are overlooked in order to focus on visuals.

Snyder has such a slavish objective to bring comic panels/images to life that he lost sight of everything else. But I do remember thinking they handled the midnight climax better (less cheesy).
