Duel

Pretty solid. Got a little repetitive at times, but I was surprised how much Spielberg managed to get out of so little. Amazing how little wind-up there was to Spielberg's career. He was excellent right out of the gate.

My aunt went out and saw Duel when it was in theaters; a few days later, she panicked when she thought she was being followed by a truck right up behind her, tailgating dangerously close. Turns out her trunk had popped open and was filling the entirety of her rear-view mirror.

Always bums me out when I hear stories like this. Kinda wish I were born in a time where people weren't desensitized and would be affected by movies so deeply that they sleep with bibles under their beds after seeing The Exorcist.

Then I remember how awesome  the Internet is and get over it.

Have you seen Police Story 2 before?

City Hunter is awesome.  It's Jackie Chan with the absurd excesses of Hong Kong cinema of the time as well.

Both movies were amazing. Too bad about the technical issues with the 1st one. That guy who presented Project A2 had so much energy.  :lol

I'm not sure if I should go again tomorrow. I don't think I have anyone to go with me this time.

Yeah.  I own it in like 3 different formats
Think making another trip to see that and part 3 is worth it?

That guy is like that at EVERY screening I've seen that Subway Cinema (the NY Asian Film Fest guys) does.  It's nice to have someone so enthusiastic.  We actually dipped out at the same time to go pee during Poject A 2 and he ran from the bathroom back to the theater.

I have a lot of work I have to do, that's what's keeping me from pulling the trigger on Part 2.  I like Part 2, but it's kind of dark so it's not the first thing i think of when I want a Jackie Chan movie, you know?  Part 3 will definitely be worth it, i think.  The stunts and physicality on display will be next level.

Yeah, I'm not in the mood for a dark or serious movie from him either. I'll see if I can find at least 2 other ppl interested in watching part 3 so that I can do the package deal to lower the price.

Forgot to mention, he explained that Jackie Chan had full creative control for Project A 2. He was able to do whatever he wanted no matter how long it took and that some bedroom scene alone took about a month to film. I'm guessing its the one where everyone was in that girl's house. I think he said the full movie took 9 months. Cool stuff.

so as it turns out Berberian Sound Studio is pretty awesome.  Toby Jones in a too rare leading role plays an extremely meek, extremely British sound engineer transplanted to Italy to work on a particularly nasty giallo.  As work progresses on the film he starts to loose his grip, Repulsion-style.  As an all too rare actual psychological thriller, its a welcome piece of expert filmmaking that's not only a loving and smart tribute to under respected genre films, but is likely to become one as well.

I loved BSS until the end, when the director had a stroke.

The general vibe is reminiscent of Performance, another film about madness, and Mick Jaggers vaginal lips.

What an excellent film! I had only heard a brief mention of it on Norm MacDonald's new show before taking a look, and I was really impressed. It's basically "30 Rock: The Movie" and it introduced me to the actor Peter O'Toole, who I'm ashamed to say I knew nothing about before seeing this. His performance was enchanting, and I fell very much in love with his character. Fast-becoming one of my favorite films the more I think on it.

The most well known passive agressive architecturally racist statement of the USA is under attack.

There's an amazing scene with the potus and son early on, Manuel Fugas the director, panics. Poor fucker, as Training Day was an excellent film. His Arthur one, and everything else has been awful.

Dead Birds: The first, and only time Henry Thomas will be given top billing above Michael Shannon. The actress who played Meg Masters in the Supernatural TV series is also in it, but nearly unrecognizable with long, black hair, and a little more weight on her. The practical effects looked cheap, the CG looked surprisingly good, and were Korean. They are pretty much typical creepypasta style photoshoppery, but still effective. Ending was a good stab at meta-weirdness, but a little flat.  A very nice low budget film.

Saw Bloody Tie last night.

It's about a semi-corrupt cop who wants to make a name for himself by using a low level meth dealer to take down a larger dealer.  The movie was made in 2006 but the story takes place in 1997 - 2001 following the collapse of the IMF in Korea.  This economic turmoil led to a rise in drug use as nihilism kind of gripped the country (according to the movie).  As it's a "period piece" the director kind of went all out and shot it like a 70s DePalma movie; split screen, funk-ish soundtrack, violence, etc.

i wasn't expecting the film to be so goddamn funny.  The first 2/3 are almost a buddy comedy with a cop teaming up with a meth dealer before the inevitable third act Korean Tone Shift which inevitably turns every movie into a weird melodrama.  No different in this case as life turns to shit for everyone involved.  It doesn't quite Go Hamlet, but it's close enough.  The ending drags and drags and drags but everything up to that point is great fun.

NYAFF continues

If someone ask you "Hey, want to see Confessions of Murder" You want to say "Yes."  It's an absolute batshit insane action blockbuster that doesn't make a goddamn lick of sense, but it doesn't matter because it's shot very well with some amazing editing and some crazy over the top action scenes.  Best car chase since Ronin.

(it looks like it's on youtube already which is impressive considering the version we saw was incomplete)

Mystery.  This is mainland China film and it may be the best film I've seen this year.  I can't say a thing about it other than you should watch it with as little information as possible beforehand.  The less you know, the better. Beautifully shot, well acted and a great intimate story.  it's almost a chinese noir film.

another solid Soderbergh movie. Great style and directing. Story is simple and moved at a good pace. Well told and entertaining.

Rooney Mara was really great. She's such a beauty. I could hear her slipping into the Lisbeth character at times which was weird.

I just watched Fast 6

and HOLY FUCK that was a goddamn movie. I can't believe how good it is. The action sequences are inventive, and well shot. The use of CG is reduced to a minimum and that's something I couldn't believe. Maybe they just did a better job at hiding it, but nearly every car chase sequence looked mostly practical with some CG used during helicopter shots and small elements here and there. I saw actual cars weaving in and out of actual traffic. Incredible.

And to my second biggest surprise, the story is actually fucking clever and smartly written with lots of great character moments. Things are constantly setup and then paid off which is something I absolutely love in films.

GREAT MOVIE. I would even say that it's better than Fast 5 in a lot of aspects.

Just saw Johnnie To's new film Drug War at NYAFF and it. is. AMAZING.

Crisp character study with a tragic ending.  engaging almost from the first minutes.  amazing amazing amazing film.  if you get the chance to see it in theaters, do so.
it's being distributed by Wellgo so it will end up on Netflix at some point, but you should really try to see it on the big screen.

in this thread I am murderously jealous of Eric P for being able to hang at the NYAFF.

I've got a man date with the only other guy I know in person who likes Johnnie To, we're gonna watch Throwdown at some point in the future.  Should be nice.
you know what else is nice, Haunters, which is a pretty ace Korean film from the last few years about an evil guy with powerful psychic abilities (like Pusher from The X-Files, with his eyes not his voice) and the one guy who's immune to his mojo who tries to stop him.  This film is notable for also having positively portrayed African and Muslim characters, kinda rare in Asian cinema.  Decided to watch because a Japanese remake is a brewing and I realized that I had not yet seen this.  Its good shit.

Wanted to get some USA feels and '80s nostalgia, so I rented MIAMI VICE. Michael Mann brings just the right amount of what made Miami Vice great in its day, and applies more of what he's learned since that era. Jamie Foxx was flawless, and Colin Farrell was alright. If there's anything I could complain about, it's the weird, "Everyone wants to get with the Asian chick" vibe that goes throughout the film I mean, basically everyone loses their professional perspective at some point because they're all bonkers to get with a very cold, very severe-looking Asian mob accountant. I mean, Gong Li killed it. She was very good. But I just don't see why #1 baddie, #2 baddie, and Crockett ALL had to have a thing for her.

Another part that bothered me was some continuity stuff: In one scene, prior to meeting a major player, Sonny and Rico are frisked for weapons, but not two minutes later, Sonny produces a hand grenade. I guess he had it in his underpants, and the frisker mistook it for his brass balls.

After that, I realized I shouldn't take the continuity too seriously, but there's a whole bit in the climax where the Miami/Dade Police Department appear to have TRANSPORTER TECHNOLOGY, because they're in the middle of a very fast boat journey in one scene, racing toward a deal and then, BAM, they're infiltrating a trailer park, outfitted with SWAT kit.

It is, all in all, a fun movie with a lot of suspense. Several UK citizens people play Americans, which is always a little weird for me, but then Naomie Harris gets in a shower with Jamie Foxx and I forgot about most of it.

Jackie Chan retrospective fired up yesterday at Lincoln Center

Drunken Master 2 is still as near a perfect kung fu film as you could imagine, and is a hell of a lot of fun on the big screen.

Tuesday it's the Project A films for me then Thursday it's Police Story.

Then this weekend is the start of the NYAFF

Going to be spending a lot of time in the dark ths coming week
Link to this? Or is it too late? I've never seen all the Project A movies.

Project A, especially the second one, are awesome.
